This must be an Internet wind up?

Let me just check if it's a hoax:

leadstories.com/hoax-alert/2020/08/fact-check-dreamworks-trolls-doll-is-not-designed-to-groom-young-children-for-pedohiles.html

Was DreamWorks Trolls World Tour Giggle 'n Sing Poppy Troll doll designed with a "private parts" button to groom young children for pedophiles? No, that's not true: The button on the rear bottom of the toy was designed to trigger giggling sounds whenever the doll is placed in a sitting position. There is no evidence, beyond the fears of some mothers, that the button is part of a secret strategy by the toymaker to prep kids for sex trafficking.

Phew. That's all right then.

Seriously?

insideandout3, I don't think picklemewalnuts is an idiot (I don't think you are one either, for reference) but it didn't seem necessary to state.

I think Hanlon's razor applies to the majority mainstream of 'inappropriate' toys. I'd also say that, assuming a lack of paedophile conspiracies, I can see how confirmation bias might play a role (an engineer expecting to hear silly, innocuous noises and perceiving them as such).

Lamahaha · 06/08/2020 17:29

I just signed a petition to have it removed. It has almost 160500 signatures and is moving fast and fine.

insideandout3 · 06/08/2020 17:24

Grateful as I am for Gronky's whataboutmen interjection that suggests picklemewalnuts is an idiot for using the word "never" and opening the door for Gronky's self-satisfying GOTCHYA! post, it's worth pointing out the Troll doll is a toy to be played with as a toy and the Batman dispenser pump is a dispenser pump to be used as a tool.

I agree with FemaleandLearning that this is grooming in plain sight.

The ONS reports:

'The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) estimated that 7.5% of adults aged 18 to 74 years experienced sexual abuse before the age of 16 years (3.1 million people); this includes both adult and child perpetrators.'*

3.1 million victims. That means that paedophilia is by no means a minority interest.

I think this (and the Audi advert) are deliberate. Grim.

What. The. Actual. Fuck?

merrymouse · 06/08/2020 16:43

The 'leadstories' article is very irritating.

Even if the doll was not designed to facilitate child abuse, it can certainly be used to normalise child abuse, and a toy manufacturing company the size of Hasbro should have better policies and standards in place.

Sexnotgender · 06/08/2020 16:27

That’s creepy as fuck.

BatShite · 06/08/2020 16:25

..what the fuck. Can't say anything else atm, how on earth..

MrsKCastle · 06/08/2020 15:41

Saw this yesterday. It is shocking. There should NEVER be a button placed there on a child's doll, for any reason whatsoever. Let alone making those sounds.

Kilbranan · 06/08/2020 15:35

It’s also pretty suspect that they put poppy in a dress that matches the MAP flag

FemaleAndLearning · 06/08/2020 14:47

What's the betting Hasbro do an Audi and send out a 'deeply regret' apology.

Gronky · 06/08/2020 14:42

@picklemewalnuts

I'd say best case scenario, ignorant male designers who would never have made a button out of a penis bulge because it would have screamed inappropriate. Women's genitals are not 'precious' in the same way so 'just a handy place to put a button'. That's assuming there isn't an active map group deliberately infiltrating toys in this way.

but this still isn't something a lone pervert could pull off.

Indeed. And there is a considerable perception that paedophilia is far more pervasive than anyone realises.

How else to account for the total acceptance of paedophiles being upfront and open on social media? Even to the lengths of describing the ages of the children they are interested in.

What this doll says to me is that there is a considerable amount of complacency by those who think they can get away with it, and also those who naïvely think it's innocent.

How did they expect anyone to buy the idea that it's normal for dolls to gasp out loud when they are put in a seated position, or giggle, or make approving noises? It's not something that anyone does!!

Kantastic · 06/08/2020 12:17

just what the FUCK.

The Audi ad confused me because there must have been dozens of people involved. But this.. even more so. How did this get from design into production into marketing into retail and get into the hands of a child without anyone stopping it? I know not all the people involved will have been aware of the button, but this still isn't something a lone pervert could pull off.

BertiesLanding · 06/08/2020 11:17

This is what happens when lines are blurred and there is a pervasive pornification that seeps into online, and then real, life.

picklemewalnuts · 06/08/2020 11:13

This is the design it should have. Presumably they are trying to skirt copyright somewhow?

Someone tell me I'm being hypersensitive.

Amazon, poppy troll dress up outfit. That white shape, and its positioning? Have I just been on mumsnet for too long?

If it was just an "oopsy daisy" fall down button it would be advertised on the box. I'd also wager with the positioning that landing on a flat surface wouldn't trigger that button, it would need to be actually pushed.

FemaleAndLearning · 06/08/2020 08:49

Grooming in plain sight.

PearPickingPorky · 06/08/2020 08:32

They knew exactly what they were doing with this.

The absolute best case scenario is that there was a puerile immature guy who thought he was being funny sneaking through this alternative adult perspective that nobody else had realised. Or a few had realised, which they shared the joke together via a covert snigger.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 06/08/2020 08:30

Normally I go to these things, and it's a bit of a reach, but this one is well, WELL over the line of of having a completely innocent explanation.

And the hair colours - almost as if someone did it to see how far they could go before someone flagged it up.

DianasLasso · 06/08/2020 08:16

@Datun

Surely to God, they would know as soon as someone presses the button in the crotch of the doll and it makes those giggling sounds, the jig is up?

How did they ever think this would fly?

Pretty much sums it up.

And how they thought their "it's meant to make an 'oopsy-daisy' sound when she lands on her bum" explanation would fly with anyone who actually listened to the sound effects. They sound more like a comedy 70s porno than anything else, especially that bloody creepy giggle.

Interesting that the colour of the dolls hair (and clothes?) changed from the film, too.
