Has anyone seen William Shatner's twitter? He is arguing against the use of cis and how it is an insult. He seems to be doing quite well too.

😂 @Harriedharriet ‘s Sister Michael reference.

And just to add, no they wouldn't unfriendly me. They don't have a problem with the term 'woman' They are not out to steal that title from us. I still choose to use the term cis in day to day life because 'not trans' just sets my teeth on edge. I don't say 'not gay' for the same reason. It just sounds derogatory. And derogatory things don't stop being derogatory just because you are not around certain people.

Goodnight.
Getting a little ragged there are we Littlemeadow123? (said like Sr. Michael in Derry Girls....). {grin}

Ritascornershop · 05/08/2020 02:57

True enough about Stephen King, that was bizarre. But Shatner has always had a good sense of humour about himself and just seems fairly unflappable.

hammie46i · 05/08/2020 02:40
@ErrolTheDragon What about other kinds of labels that we use. Gay? Straight? Bisexual? Homosexual? Lesbian? Heterosexual? Heck, even things like Extrovert, Introvert, Ambivert are labels. Should we stop using them too? Or is it just because cis is linked to trans.
Those are only terms you get to use about yourself though. No one else gets to tell you, you're bisexual or you're an introvert.

I'm not declaring myself as "cis" (nor do I accept this word) therefore no one else can use it about me.

@Ritascornershop

I’d be very surprised if Shatner caved. He’s old(er) so gives no fucks about thought-trends, he strikes me as a person secure In his sense of self, and he’s got enough money he doesn’t need to worry about income drying up. Go Bill!
That’s all true, but remember how quickly Stephen King caved? But I really hope you’re right, I bloody loved TJ Hooker Grin

There is no need to add cis, because there is already a word for a biological female, it's woman.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 05/08/2020 01:22

I haven't tried to convince you to call yourself cis. I accept that you are not cis but you clearly cannot accept that I am.

But in what way does calling yourself cis make you something that poster is not? There is no logic in that. If you are both female at birth, why isn't the word woman enough?

Spinachfinger · 05/08/2020 01:06

My gay best friend uses the term 'not gay' when she refers to me. Neither of us see it as derogatory, just more of a fact.

DialSquare · 05/08/2020 01:06

Obviously would should be wouldn't.

DialSquare · 05/08/2020 01:05

I personally wouldn't say not gay as there a word that covers that. Heterosexual. Same reason I would say not trans. I wonder what that word could be.

In fact, you are trying to convince me not ot be, despite preaching to me that I should accept and respect other people's choices and opinions. This argument isn't getting us anywhere so this is the last thing I'll say. It's now 1 in the morning so have a nice day.
I never said you had? I think you are reading things that aren't there LittleMeadow. And sure, if you can't answer logical questions put to you, then that's your lookout. Goodnight

DialSquare · 05/08/2020 00:59

I'd be surprised if he did cave looking at the way he's responding now. He's having fun with it. Like John Cleese but with a different approach.

I always suspected @DialSquare Wink

AnneOfQueenSables · 05/08/2020 00:55

Much though it's fascinating re-affirming certainly posters sense of self (or is it self-importance) ... I'm much more interested in the tweets that the thread was started to discuss.
I hope Shatner doesn't cave. It would be nice to have a prominent member of sci-fi royalty refusing to be bullied into submission.
Does anyone know Patrick Stewart's position on these issues?
@Spinachfinger

It's not redundant when I'm with my trans friends or going to trans events. Because saying that I'm 'not-trans' or 'normal' is demeaning. Cis and Trans make us different but equal. And they are not going to try to steal the title of 'woman' away from us. As my trans friend said to me, that she is always going to be a transwoman. Nothing is going to change that.
I'm failing to see what is wrong with saying 'not-trans' when attending trans events. Surely it's just the opposite of 'trans'?

Also, if you say cis at these events you have decided to use that word to not alienate your trans friends. This is thoughtful of you.

But in every day occurrences, you probably wouldn't need to say it (unless you worked and lived in a trans dominated environment).... and even so what if you chose just to be labelled as 'woman'? Would they unfriend you? Genuinely curious.

DialSquare · 05/08/2020 00:54

It seems I'm shapephobic Spinach!

BluebonicPlague · 05/08/2020 00:53

Apologies, Littlemeadow123, weary is more like it. You know what? A few years ago I was cheerfully identifying as cis het AFAB. I followed PZ Myers, primarily for his atheism, and in the process learned a lot about trans* and how, back in those days, people pronounced it trans-splat. I was hugely sympathetic, and pretty contemptuous of stone age women who wouldn’t accept TW as women, actual women. I spent a lot of time trying to convince them that they should. It was nobody else’s business what was in someone’s pants.

Except it was. It was always male people telling female people what to do. To accept, make way, make room, shut up. Once you see that, you can’t unsee it. Men telling women. Yes, there are sympathetic female people, like I was, but the drivers are male. And so many women doing what they’re told.

So cis? These days, yes, I do give it a bit of the side eye.

Spinachfinger · 05/08/2020 00:51

@DialSquare

Well I don't know about you but I was only thinking of myself when I chose my user name. What other people think of it is no concern to me.
How dare you dial Square? Didn't you think about the poor Pentagon in any of this? Wink
Spinachfinger · 05/08/2020 00:50

And if how you identify doesn't make you less of a woman.... then logic dictates the word 'woman' should be enough on it's own
