It will not allow Joanna Cherry to run for MSP in her constituency without resigning as an MP. The NEC has just changed the rules for this.

ALSO not allowing sitting MSP James Dorman to recontest his seat as they are making it women only, allegedly to make way for one of the most active 'trans right's campaigners, Rhiannon Spear.

@Aesopfable

Yes I know Boris does this too. Perhaps the briefing need to be cross-party?
Boris doesn’t tell lies about what is happening in Scotland.

@BlackForestCake

They are not daily SNP broadcasts, they are briefings from the government.
They are both. Her points are also political. Any criticism of westminster is not just government briefing it is political, talk about closing borders is political, claiming England had withheld PPE was political (turned out they hadn’t), manipulating statistics is political.
ScrimpshawTheSecond · 31/07/2020 22:44

Ah, thanks Aesop.

In principal I agree but timing is a bit convenient isn't it? Why not do it from the start of devolution? Dornan situation confirms suspicions.

Wonder if McAlpine is in their sights as well. Not sure they can pull a fast one on her so easily but you never know.

Aesopfable · 31/07/2020 21:30

@ScrimpshawTheSecond

Surely it would be possible to run for MP, but resign as MSP if successful?
Other way round - the Scottish elections are next spring.

I saw something somewhere (just a headline that I didn’t manage to return to) that the BBC were going to (or someone had complained?) stop NS daily briefings as they were political. I agree with this - so close to an election the SNP should not be able to make daily political broadcasts.

Why are you complaining about this?

It's the right thing to do. Salmond had his snout in 2 troughs picking a Westminster salary and Holyrood salary. There's no justication for allowing someone to sit in 2 seats.

I loathe the SNP but this is actually one of their rare sensible measures.

highame · 31/07/2020 20:08

wooowoo just look at those tweets. I couldn't find one that backed the NEC.

scotsheather · 31/07/2020 19:50

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

Why isn't Edinburgh Central being made women only? Hmm

Will be interesting if Dornan stands as an independent...

This seems to be pissing a lot of people of though, the NEC choosing candidates rather than the local branch.

Blaenau Gwent 2005 is an example of this. Male ally to women or kool aid drinking female? I know my preference.

Stacking the deck in an ongoing mockery of democracy Angry

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 31/07/2020 19:28

Hm. I am not a fan of the SNP, but I might join.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 31/07/2020 19:26

Ms Spear most vociferously and angrily declines that there is any difference between normal women and more special women.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 31/07/2020 19:16

Someone's telling James Dornan to ID as a woman. After all, acceptance without exception - right?

I mean - it would certainly bring everything screaming into the public consciousness.

Dornan just won't have a career after doing it, so it would be a sacrifice I can't imagine he'd make.

SunsetBeetch · 31/07/2020 19:15

@ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings

I don't know anything about Ms. Spear. Is she one of those female women, or the important type?
The former, but she wouldn't make a distinction between the two herself.
