No death threats as he's a man but fuck knows why "individuals with a cervix" is better than "women and transmen"

Nobody ever points out that not everyone knows if they have a cervix

And not only but also, not everybody knows that 'cervix' and 'cervical' relate to the same thing. Different words, different spelling. Not necessarily clear

Melroses · 02/08/2020 23:28

I like the Scottish poster on the survey - good choice of colours.

MondayYogurt · 02/08/2020 21:37

Rather strange that all the cervical cancer charities have women's names...

Almost as if there's some connection there.

Did the same Kit.

Kit19 · 02/08/2020 19:40

Filled in the survey praising everything where the word woman is used

The use gender instead of sex but there is a box for “prefer to self describe” where I wrote I don’t have a gender, I have a sex - adult human female

MondayYogurt · 02/08/2020 19:28

Anyway they're running a survey on it here

Here we have an example of english language privilege IMO. An entire thread composed of people fluent in english and willing/able to impose the substitution of plain english (woman) with any more complicated variants in order to accommodate a minority.
Completely ignoring the huge numbers of women who don't have english language competence at the level required.
Imagine being so closeted that you never encounter another woman who struggles with reading or speaking english in the UK. Imagine assuming absolutely everyone knows where and what a cervix is. It's so insanely myopic.

Here's a whole paper on the benefits of plain english in medicine. Key words: health literacy

@NearlyGranny

How interesting that the bile and savagery bypasses the Twitter user who originated the post (male) and pikes in on someone who just liked it (female). I think that tells us everything we need to know. TRAs appear to be rampant misogynists. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Yes. And they they know the difference between man and woman when choosing who to hate on.
aliasundercover · 01/08/2020 16:13

I had always assumed biology teachers were meant to teach facts, not personal beliefs!

Probably not a biology teacher, but somebody teaching PTSCE (or what ever it's called now - much like LGBTQI++ it seems to add another letter each year).
PTSCE is often taught by form tutors, not specialists, so this could be a teacher of any subject.

Nice gerbil, I had always assumed biology teachers were meant to teach facts, not personal beliefs! I doubt he'll last long in post. Much better to stick to the curriculum which is what he's being paid for.

No doubt the parents will cotton on when the students start talking about the diagrams of unicorns and mermaids they're doing. 😆

Siablue · 01/08/2020 14:40

Poor Rosie Duffield. I wondered what she thought of all this after her brilliant DV speech. At least there is someone in the Labour Party who knows what a woman is.

On the other hand, If Piers Morgan thinks you are a misogynist then there is no hope for you.

NiceGerbil · 01/08/2020 13:47

A teacher on one of those threads has said he would not tell his class that human females menstruate as

It's not what he believes

And

It goes against equalities legislation

Wtf

This is going to be a disaster for sex ed etc if teachers are saying that boys and girls can get pregnant etc

@twoHopes

Nobody ever points out that not everyone knows if they have a cervix

Haha this is a great point. A) some people have no idea what a cervix is and B) how the fuck do you know if you've got a cervix if you haven't had a smear test or had kids? Surely you can only assume you have one because... you're female?!

This is, indeed, an excellent point.

How would one actually know if one was included in the group of humans who have a cervix?

What is the actual criteria? If it's got nothing to do with whether you are male or female, how can you tell? How does a single human being decide, judge, or conclude that they have a cervix?

What are they going on?

What is the list of conditions? And how do you know if you meet them?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 01/08/2020 13:35

Yep, the witch-burners are out in force
Good to see the vast majority of the comments on that are not on board at all. When sanity is starting to prevail even on Twitter, you really need to have a rethink on who ‘the baddies’ are.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 01/08/2020 13:29

Her tweets are protected now, a terrible thing for a sitting MP to have to do. But a quick glance at reddit (blurregh, I’ll have to shower again) suggests she merely stated:
"I'm a 'transphobe' for knowing that only women have a cervix....?!"
It also suggests, but I’m not sure when, she also refused to confirm that TWAW. If she allows my follow, I’ll tweet my support.

If anyone is on twitter Rosie Duffield Labour MP is being piled on about this issue. She is a domestic abuse survivor.

This resistance to the erasure of the word "woman" has brought the witch-prickers out in force:

merrymouse · 01/08/2020 11:05

The sheer 'gotcha' pedantry and ignorance combined from the people going "Aha, so you don't think people whose cervix has been surgically removed qualify as women any more?!"

This is so ridiculous. Women who have had their cervix removed will definitely know what a cervix is.

More than that women know that, whether they like it or not, the functioning of their reproductive system will change over time. They don't magically become men. (If they did they would be able to have a baby at 56 while being Prime Minister and get congratulated for 'helping out'.).

merrymouse · 01/08/2020 10:58

Can someone point me to the research about women not knowing if they have a cervix please? I've seen this mentioned before but not sure where the data comes from.

Why would women who speak English as a second language know what a cervix is? It's not a commonly used word.

Eyesofdisarray · 01/08/2020 10:14

Struggling with the Canadian Cancer Society's message about possible cancer cells in neo-vagina/cervix when discussing screening for women. Just why is this relevant?
Given that many women aren't aware of their own biology (for whatever reason that might be) I'm not sure that this is helpful at all
But maybe there'd be shouts of 'transphobia' if this information was placed where it could be helpful to male bodied individuals??
Given that the more information the public receive about cancer screening the better?

And yes- can't see men getting the backlash for their comments....

NearlyGranny · 01/08/2020 09:44

The sheer 'gotcha' pedantry and ignorance combined from the people going "Aha, so you don't think people whose cervix has been surgically removed qualify as women any more?!"

"If you have a cervix, you're a (girl or) woman," doesn't imply that if you don't, you're not. I believe all cats to be mammals but I'm not saying all mammals are cats.

As for relying on biology teaching to clear up the cervix confusion, teachers can't teach children who simply aren't there to be taught and what teacher can guarantee that everyone they taught the facts at age 14 remembers everything by age 25 when screening starts? What about immigrant women for whom English is a second, third or fourth language? They are far more likely to know the words woman and women than the word cervix or cervical, which never appear on toilet doors!

We don't talk much about the cervix because it's so neatly tucked away. No magazine articles about how to make it prettier and more alluring!

GingerBeverage · 01/08/2020 09:44

The UK has poor literacy levels. Many people struggle to read and understand plain english.

literacytrust.org.uk/parents-and-families/adult-literacy/what-do-adult-literacy-levels-mean/

In England, adult literacy is often referred to in terms of ‘levels’ – for example, a 2011 government survey of adult literacy skills found that 14.9% (or 1 in 7) of adults in England have literacy levels at or below Entry Level 3, which is equivalent to the literacy skills expected of a nine to 11-year-old.
More recently, in 2015, the OECD conducted its Survey of Adult Skills, known as PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies). This survey found that 16.4% (or 1 in 6) of adults in England, and 17.9% (or 1 in 5) adults in Northern Ireland, have literacy levels at or below Level 1, which is considered to be 'very poor literacy skills'.
