Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Chase Strangio and accusations towards JKR around Genocide.

Chase Strangio, ACLU lawyer extraordinaire, has a little tweet thread accusing Joanne Rowling of genocide etc. in which Chase does not tag her, but calls her 'the Harry Potter person'. Quite apart from the majestic irony of obscuring her sex and defining her by her male character creation, the accusation of genocide support is astounding and in keeping with the usual tone from TRAs.

However, I particularly enjoyed the second of the tweets in the thread, for, verily forsooth, it did display that Chase knoweth many words thereof, but not how to use them coherently. See if you can help me parse this gem;

Situating the trans subject and the trans body in the contested discursive space the way she does pulls the conversation around transness into the posture of working to locate the legitimate trans subject.

I think Chase means that by talking openly about trans as a subject, and trans people's bodies, Rowling is encouraging people to think about what Trans actually means. I'm not certain, because, who would be?

I think Chase takes issue with this conversation because in the context of the thread, Chase is suggesting that talking about Trans people is basically encouraging society to commit genocide against them.

See if you can make head or tail of it.

I’ll go out on a limb and say that in 10 years’ time, we will look back and see that not a single trans person has been killed or suicided as a result of anything JK Rowling has said. Hmm

However, I do think it’s possible that there will be a number of people, likely women who are currently teenage girls, who have avoided having their bodies medicalised for life as a result of the awareness JK Rowling has brought, and will be incredibly grateful.

That sounds like what my Sixth Formers do when trying to wring more words out of a half formed idea.

Whatever it means we're all bad people .

That tweet that I just posted, says to me..

(And please do say if I have misunderstood).

Is that there is an imposition of the 'sexed body' on trans people but not on any other people in the world (??!!??).

And that the policing of the sexed bodies of trans people (but not anybody else) (!!!) Perpetuates the violent enforcement of the gender binary. (No argument from me that gender is shite and violently enforced to a greater or lesser extent to the detriment of both men and women but women moreso).

So a secondary translation is:

That people who aren't trans are free from being policed due to their sexed bodies and furthermore are contributing to the often violent imposition of sex role on men and women all over the world.

So... Non trans people all support things like the missing millions, FGM, the fact that girls and women are disproportionally affected by sexual violence and sex trafficking, girls who are raped being forced to give birth when their bodies are too young to support it etc etc etc

Is that about right?

Reminds me of when writing my dissertation at 3am in the morning and you start using the synonyms a Little to liberally.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 27/07/2020 22:01

Chase is totally channeling Judith Butler on that tweet...

Weird when Butler’s work is such a load old wank.

And perhaps most insidiously, in so doing, we give the false impression that sexed bodies are things only trans people have. By obscuring the larger structural impulses behind bodily policing and the violence of the sex binary, we ensure the continuation of these structures.'

This is a totally pisstake and fuck you to all women and girls globally.

Nice.

They seem to be identified as a US bank though.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 27/07/2020 20:45

It’s just word soup #nodebate isn’t it? No free speech for those nasty people who understand biology Hmm

CarnivorousYoni · 27/07/2020 20:26

Yes, Chase said they find it triggering to open letters that use their deadname, and thus, because they racked up some debts using their dead name, and therefore found it so distressing to see the name, they couldn't open the letters and therefore pay their debts.

One of the more startling examples of TRAs refusing to accept any responsibilities, tbh.

That the ACLU put Chase as its public face shows they've been totally corrupted. They now support criminalization of speech re: misgendering.

Sexnotgender · 27/07/2020 20:09

Is Chase the person who gets scared opening letters and so is in debt? Or have I mixed them up with someone else?

@Portnlemon

A bunch of infantile tweets like this is soon ridiculed and shot down in the sunlight of the adult Twitter sphere diffusing the impact enormously and encouraging debate. The opposite of Strangio's intentions.

The nasty article about her was different, it was emailed to subscribers for children, a more insideously unpleasant approach.

ACLU did a somewhat similar thing on the International Men's day, wishing a great day to all men and listing menstruating men and men who give birth among other types.

Probably the same originator? In any case, the responses to the tweet were not in agreement. One man said he laughed so hard he got his period.

AnyOldPrion · 27/07/2020 19:39

Incidentally, we're told trans men pass better. I'd never heard of Chase but could see instantly that they're female.

I’ve started noticing, when I wouldn’t have noticed before. Longer term, high doses of testosterone have quite a distinctive effect on female bodies.

nauticant · 27/07/2020 18:39

I'd hope that JKR is advised not to rise to bait like this. It would turn into a messy and protracted case that the ACLU would probably be keen to throw its weight behind.

Best to respond to clearer defamations with easy to identify damage rather than abusive stuff tweeted by someone who might not be all there.

Goosefoot · 27/07/2020 18:39

@GoldenOmber

That the same ACLU that have defended the KKK’s right to go on marches in white hoods?
I totally support them in that.

One of the great things about various civil liberties groups, in the past, has been their principled commitment to free speech - even when it involves unlikable people and nasty ideas.

But it's interesting that generally they have taken on support for trans causes, rather than those of women and children.

Oddly enough Trump has been a much better friend to Mexico than Obama. I can't understand it, he says such OTT things and seems to determined to get his supporters to die of covid or by drinking bleach, but the fact remains, we like him here in Mexico.

And the ACLU was founded a century ago by, among others, Helen Keller, for laudable purposes.

How tragic that it has descended to this sort of pernicious babbling. How does someone who thinks and writes like that even acquire a law degree? They surely wouldn't in the UK.

Perhaps CS was drunk-tweeting? It's the most generous interpretation.

LizA49 · 27/07/2020 17:54

My OH and I have developed something of a pattern of watching an episode of “the world at war” every Sunday lunchtime. Yesterday was the episode titled “genocide”. It was utterly heartbreaking, hearing firsthand from people who had survived the Holocaust; the horrors they saw and endured. The sheer monstrousness of it.

Anyone who uses that word so carelessly is without shame.

Tootletum · 27/07/2020 17:32

Really disappointed I gave them money for the whole Mexican border drama thing in 2018. This is all such bullshit they're just stoking so much anger they'll end up getting trump reelected. Which will probably result in us all dying in a nuclear winter. So yeah, TRAs will bring about the end of the world. Cool.
