Chase Strangio and accusations towards JKR around Genocide.

Chase Strangio, ACLU lawyer extraordinaire, has a little tweet thread accusing Joanne Rowling of genocide etc. in which Chase does not tag her, but calls her 'the Harry Potter person'. Quite apart from the majestic irony of obscuring her sex and defining her by her male character creation, the accusation of genocide support is astounding and in keeping with the usual tone from TRAs.

However, I particularly enjoyed the second of the tweets in the thread, for, verily forsooth, it did display that Chase knoweth many words thereof, but not how to use them coherently. See if you can help me parse this gem;

Situating the trans subject and the trans body in the contested discursive space the way she does pulls the conversation around transness into the posture of working to locate the legitimate trans subject.

I think Chase means that by talking openly about trans as a subject, and trans people's bodies, Rowling is encouraging people to think about what Trans actually means. I'm not certain, because, who would be?

I think Chase takes issue with this conversation because in the context of the thread, Chase is suggesting that talking about Trans people is basically encouraging society to commit genocide against them.

See if you can make head or tail of it.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman, I agree with your last sentence. The only way I have been able to understand the catastrophising reactions of so many trans activists to the gentlest of questioning is that it, in fact, doesn't feel like gentle questioning to them, but an actual violent assault at their innermost core.

What I still don't quite understand is why that core is so fragile and why it appears to require validation from every single person in the whole world.

None of us get affirmed in many aspects of our identities, after all. So why is this the one type of questioning that a person can't shrug off?

This makes debating the issues almost impossible, but given what is happening when that debating is not allowed, I see no real alternative to trying to defend women's very hard-won rights. And this means not erasing biological sex from language, science and so on.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 28/07/2020 03:46

Isn’t a discursive space just a (metaphorical) space where discourse (also known as discussion) happens? A contested discursive space is where people disagree in a discussion.

Really all Mr Strangio is trying to sat us that JKR is talking about stuff and she should stop it.

I imagine for Mr Strangio the level of hatred directed toward JKR and other women, is in direct proportion to theIr depth of need to validate a life choice, which must have come at enormous cost. I suppose the sunk cost, in a psychological sense.

SomeDyke · 28/07/2020 02:31

I'll admit I searched on 'contested discursive space' and came up with some other load of nonsense 'Gender, Place, Discursive Space: Where is Same-Sex Marriage? ' by some Prof. of Law from 2008. Usual load of old twaddle as far as I can see, that seems to think that by ' transgressive performances of gender roles' alone, you can effect change. Butler has a lot to answer for...........

MAYBE IT IS A SPELL!

I think you've got it! Get the stresses just right (it's le-vi-o-sah), repeat enough times, and the nasty Potter person disappears, obviously.

The Contested Discursive Space is a place like a train station, and the body has a posture issue and Rowling put something around it. But where is it? That’s the diagram.
I put cake because everyone likes cake.

I tried to do a diagram to explain it

Does anyone else see the name Chase Strangio and think of cheese strings? It's not just me, is it?
It's not just you now
I'll never see that name the same way again.

Durgasarrow · 28/07/2020 01:15

My goodness, those are certainly a lot of very special, special words. I think you need a very large dose of transitivity to understand them.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 28/07/2020 00:57

@Greenandcabbagelooking

That sounds like what my Sixth Formers do when trying to wring more words out of a half formed idea.
Yes, I tell my students regularly, an error in writing is usually an error in thinking. Can't elucidate a malformed idea. Mr Strangio, Erasmus he ain't...

NiceGerbil · 27/07/2020 23:52

But only in order to claim that the only people oppressed due to their sex are trans people.

noblegiraffe · 27/07/2020 23:49

They appear to have admitted that sex is binary.

ShinyFootball · 27/07/2020 23:42

That was the phrase that really fucked me off.

Who in the world is most often on the wrong end of both the sex binary and enforcement of gender?

Clymene · 27/07/2020 23:40

'The violence of the sex binary'. Grin

Chase needs to have a word with evolutionary biology and tell it to top being so mean

ShinyFootball · 27/07/2020 23:37

What they are saying, I think, is that gender is over riding. Sex is secondary. Only trans people get their sexed bodies policed. (Which is a very narrow view of what the policing of sexed bodies looks like indeed). IE people saying that a woman with a dick shouldn't be in xyz space. Ignoring the policing of women's bodies to the extent that they die due to being denied reproductive healthcare and etc.

Further that the fact that only trans bodies are policed supports the gender binary (sex roles) and that only trans people are affected by this (in a post about JKR who discussed DV sexual assault).

So in short. Non trans people support the consequences of enforcing sex role.

Pretty bad.

Manderleyagain · 27/07/2020 23:19

I really didn't understand this tweet:

"And perhaps most insidiously, in so doing, we give the false impression that sexed bodies are things only trans people have. By obscuring the larger structural impulses behind bodily policing and the violence of the sex binary, we ensure the continuation of these structures."

Why would only trans people have sexed bodies? No one thinks that. What's this about?

Kantastic · 27/07/2020 23:17

How can someone so bloody fragile that they can't open a letter addressed to their former name possibly be a decent lawyer?

This confuses me so much. You'd think a lawyer at the ACLU would get a LOT of nasty letters, does Chase open their own work mail?

Kantastic · 27/07/2020 23:14

Also it seems to me that part of the harm the ACLU are doing currently, is in dragging their own brand through the mud, and discrediting their other causes among people who might have once taken their moral authority seriously, but I'm not an American so this is just a vague impression gleaned online.

Clymene · 27/07/2020 23:11

Chase is a fucking knob. How can someone so bloody fragile that they can't open a letter addressed to their former name possibly be a decent lawyer? Or even function as a member of society for that matter.

Validating this level of minor distress as a cause of enormous suffering adds fuel to the fire of so many gender distressed young people's sense of victimhood.

Rather than helping gender non conforming youth, people like Strangio are whipping them into a frenzy of imagined hurts and micro aggressions, where they feel the world is conspiring against them.

Kantastic · 27/07/2020 23:10

I’m an ACLU member and I donate to them despite my skepticism about the trans cult.

I don't think they are as committed to free speech or other civil liberties as they used to be. Have a read of this. www.spiked-online.com/2020/02/14/the-aclu-would-not-take-the-skokie-case-today/

And they are taking cases like this (advocating for males who are not even on hormones to be allowed to compete against teenage girls in track competitions - where college scholarships are potentially at stake.)
www.ctpost.com/local/article/CT-wants-trans-students-to-compete-in-girls-15340712.php

Just sharing in case you aren't fully cognisant of what they've been up to lately. It looks to me like they have completely lost their way to the point where they are doing much more harm than good.

ShinyFootball · 27/07/2020 23:09

I find it really interesting that women who talk about being wary of men etc are told they are paranoids with a victim complex

While shit like this gets posted saying JKR wants all trans people dead in a genocide.
