He asked her "What is a woman?" You can imagine how that went. "Word soup" would be a kind assessment.

There was a little bit in today's Sunday Time's Atticus column which while hearsay rather than statistics I thought was somewhat interesting

She's chairing the APPG on coronavirus.

Bit disturbing in someone who doesn't believe in biological sex.

SerenityNowwwww · 26/07/2020 09:49

Well I think it demonstrated one or both of two things.

Very thick and/or
Scared of bullies and will say anything so that they won’t turn on them (yet)

TeenPlusTwenties · 26/07/2020 09:47

I was listening to this without knowing who was being interviewed.
I found myself shouting at the radio which I don't do very much.
Then towards the end they said her name and mentioned Lib Dems.

Seriously depressing they don't know what a woman is, nor do they think it is possible to uphold single sex spaces, which women have been doing since we got them.

SerenityNowwwww · 26/07/2020 00:19

But ye cannae change the laws of physics...

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 25/07/2020 23:52

Physics teacher I think.

SerenityNowwwww · 25/07/2020 23:47

Hahahahaha 😂 no, what really??🤪

TBHno · 25/07/2020 23:45

Isn't Layla a scientist by trade? Confused

ThePurported · 25/07/2020 23:11

Yes OldCrone, big difference from that debate when she talked about souls and joked about bearded women. It was the same with Jo Swinson, she sounded far from passionate or confident when she was put on the spot (chapeau to Anna from Warwickshire!), and they are both good speakers.

@BluebonicPlague

On the definition of the word "woman": "A woman is a gender. It's a way to self-identify. There are lots of genders. There is male, and that is biological. There is female, which is also biological. A woman is a gender identity, which is more akin to being a man, those are opposites. And there is also non-binary, which isn't either."

Right. I'm glad that's cleared up. So now I know that I am female but not a woman. Confused

Is it to females or to women that specific legal protections need to be given to compensate for the discrimination and violence they suffer?

This is the point, isn't it? At least she's set out her vocabulary so everyone can now ask her to specify. "Does this protect women or females?"

That's interesting. I've never thought about it like that. I suppose they were often told that they were lucky they didn't have to fight the fight (whatever one it was at the time) which made some people crave a fight. What I don't understand about gender ideology is the total lack of concern for women and girls from religious backgrounds (predominantly ethnic minorities) that will be excluded by this. If they really were social warriors ( if that's the right description) wouldn't they care about them too? I see that pointed out many times but like other questions, it is ignored.

OldCrone · 25/07/2020 22:54

Did anyone else notice how her voice changed when she was talking about trans rights and answering 'what is a woman?'

She talked fluently and clearly about everything else, including her struggles with her weight and her sexuality. But as they moved on to 'trans rights' she sounded less and less confident and convinced about what she was saying, until they got to 'what is a woman?' where her answer was an incoherent mess. Almost like that part was following a script, compared with the earlier part of the interview where she sounded as though she was giving her own views which she had actually thought about.

After 'what is a woman?' she was asked about women being called 'people who menstruate'. She seemed to have no idea that this sort of language was being used by a number of organisations. Totally out of touch.

nauticant · 25/07/2020 22:39

Is it a guilt issue for some privileged people? They feel like they have to take up a cause and fight for it without thinking logically about it?

There was a generation who felt inadequate they'd not fought the Nazis. They processed that in their own ways, and that led to all kinds of late 50s youth cults. There's now a generation who feel sad they didn't win the war for gay rights. They're processing it by abusing women to make them think and speak in the correct ways.

Seaside bank holiday violence versus mini-Maoists, it's hard to decide which is worse.

I don't know much about her background, but that inane argument is a sign of someone who has never needed or doesn't value women-only spaces. I wish she would just butt the fuck out of this debate if it makes no difference to her personally.

this.

Layla has a very privileged background included attended Roedean

Money well spent then. Not.

It all sounds very rehearsed.

Just frustrating that she wasn't challenged on it. A simple "oh, who is proposing that?"

ThePurported · 25/07/2020 21:24

And that bollocks about "would I need a card to prove I have a vagina".

Same goes for Sal Brinton, who uses that same argument and some really desperate 'women do it too' lines. It all sounds very rehearsed.

BluebonicPlague · 25/07/2020 21:17

Thank you to those who listened so I don't have to. I don't think my blood pressure could stand it.

By the way, did she have anything to say about what a man was, other than the opposite gender identity to woman? When did it suddenly become the 1950s again? And does anyone remember the 1960s when grandads used to say: "I thought he was a girl because he had long hair"?

testing987654321 · 25/07/2020 21:00

Just listened. Absolutely enraging. I am almost tempted to find out how to do a response video and upload it to YouTube.

I am a woman, that is not a gender identity, it is a factual statement.

And that bollocks about "would I need a card to prove I have a vagina". No she wouldn't. Do potential leaders of political parties normally make up outrageous suggestions to argue against? Incredibly childish.

On the word "pansexual": "Every generation chooses new language, chooses a new societal structure and then we have these debates for things and society progresses. It's a new word for a very old idea."

On trans people: "They feel very very under attack and in recent weeks many are thinking of leaving the country because they fear it's going the other way... You should be able to be who you are... We all deserve to be able to self-determine and feel safe."

Michelleoftheresistance · 25/07/2020 20:17

The situation did not 'become more complex', it merely became fashionable and acceptable to be deeply and openly misogynistic towards females.
