I'm not applauding cancel culture, but grimly amused that this is entirely down to his own actions regarding Baroness Nicholson:

I know a lot of lesbian and gay people who feel the same, vicky. My gay friend campaigned against equal marriage. I myself would rather have been able to have a straight version of a civil partnership due to cultural baggage around marriage. I think it could all have been done quite differently, so it’s a nonsense to suggest that anyone who opposed gay marriage did so because of homophobia. Why do their arguments always bludgeon through the nuance like this??

Roseburn · 27/07/2020 10:20

Forgive me, but who is kevin? Is he particularly significant?

Floisme · 27/07/2020 10:20

Thank you, Church for epicaricacy. Sometimes I just love FWR.

Deliriumoftheendless · 27/07/2020 10:19

On that Nutmeg thread she says-

“Definitely. And every time I see men and women say how discriminated against trans people are (when there's no evidence to support this) I now hear them say 'I used to openly mock gender non conforming and mentally ill men and I assume you're as pathetic as me'“

she’s onto something.

Justhadathought · 27/07/2020 10:14

So this fat gay daddy is planning to run 367 miles by the time Manchester Pride was due to start in 75 days

He has children? Boys? My word!

Justhadathought · 27/07/2020 10:12

I'm assuming this Kevin guy is gay?

There is and always has been a real undercurrent of misogyny and loathing in gay male culture; nestled underneath the drag acts; the sarcasm; the viper tongue.

VickyEadieofThigh · 27/07/2020 10:07

Not supporting same sex marriage is a matter for the individual conscience as long as the person holding that belief does not actively campaign for it to be banned for others. There are various reasons why someone might oppose it- not even all gay men and lesbians supported it.

Indeed so. I was largely indifferent to the concept (I am civil partnered and wept for joy the day Blair's govt announced they were bringing in the CP bill), because I see marriage as something that straight people do. My partner and I do not refer to each other as 'wife' and cringe if anyone suggests that is what we are to each other. To us, a "wife" is a woman married to a man.

We did not, obviously, opt to 're-brand' our civil partnership as a 'marriage' as some others did and have no plans to do so.

The replies: no you're not you misogynist and transphobe. This has brought some sunshine to this grey Monday morning.

Oh it’s just beautiful isn’t it Grin
SunsetBeetch · 27/07/2020 09:57

Well, knock me down with a feather; he also has other prejudices too:

"Hates natal women, female travellers and lesbians! I hope he is not employed in any position of power. t.co/sQoFPHpbPc "

Oh, as surely as night follows day Hmm

Funny thing is, I'm apparently a bigoted transphobe, but I've never used the word "tranny" to insult anyone, trans or otherwise.

Anyone think we could have a good thread on "Men who abuse gender critical women who turn out to have said transphobic things (or to have been an abuser). Here's another one:

"Is there a single man, who aggressively shows off that they're a 'trans ally', who isn't using it as a cover for the fact that up until quite recently they mocked gender non-conforming men in an attempt to openly bully women? t.co/gMORmI2uKc "

@Muttonindistress

Sorry, slight derail. But I love discovering a new word too. Susie Dent does a word of the week in the Radio Times, which is usually an old word that’s gone out of use. A few weeks’ back it was -

Mumpsimus: a person who obstinately adheres to an idea in spite of evidence that it’s wrong or unreasonable.

It seems quite pertinent to the trans debate.

We are going to have to do a ‘this is how you pronounce it’ thing with all these new pretty words
RufustheRowlingReindeer · 25/07/2020 19:27

@StrangeLookingParasite

The place where your past words and deeds are taken out of the context in which they were framed, in order to beat you up in the present day, in an unconnected debate.

Except in his case that tweet mocking someone's suicide attempt was just disgusting. There was no context that made it acceptable.

Absolutely

He did a shitty disgusting thing

True colours and all that shit

If he was my son, I’d know I’d done something wrong in raising him, shameful

@ChurchOfWokeApostate

Schadenfreude, ah yes.... I learned today that there is an English equivalent to schadenfreude after all, it’s epicaricacy It’s only been used about 3 times since 1955, let’s bring it back
I'm so pleased to learn that
DidoLamenting · 25/07/2020 19:03

@ARoombaOfOnesOwn

He did say something truly horrible though, far worse than a lot of people have been cancelled for.
I'd never heard of the twerp until this blee up.

His comment about the failed suicide was disgusting. It bears no comparison to someone saying their conscience opposes same sex marriage.

Not supporting same sex marriage is a matter for the individual conscience as long as the person holding that belief does not actively campaign for it to be banned for others. There are various reasons why someone might oppose it- not even all gay men and lesbians supported it. It's the same with abortion- one can be personally strongly opposed to it whilst accepting it is legal for those who need it.

SerenityNowwwww · 25/07/2020 17:49

I’m amazed anything happened about it. Shocked I am.

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/07/2020 17:43

The worst of it is - I'm not actually surprised. So many 'pillar of the community' types are discovered to be using their respectability like a cloaking device to hide who they really are. Now we see the LGBT community is exactly the same.

Any time someone holds themselves up as some holier-than-thou denouncing someone else, I can't help but expect them to be uncloaked sometime soon. It's almost a given.

SerenityNowwwww · 25/07/2020 17:34

Aw.... 🎻

Ameanstreakamilewide · 25/07/2020 16:56

But, Rabbit - Bergdorf's ego...the ego!

What could Her Ladyship possibly teach Monroe?? Hmm

rabbitwoman · 25/07/2020 16:36

My opinion..... The booker prize cannot apologise and reinstate the Baroness, but this is the next best thing.... And hopefully it will be a useful lesson to other Damien Barrs out there.....

My hope is that the baroness will utterly school munroe during their tea at the house of Lords - it's a learning opportunity - for munroe....

nauticant · 25/07/2020 16:31

They took their time but after a great deal of careful consideration Pink News are edging towards the view that perhaps Damian Barr has done a bad thing:

This exchange made me laugh:

The nutty tweets are coming from a satirical account but are indistinguishable from the real thing.
