Update on my case, and on exactly how much Girlguiding is spending of their money

As a charity. On fighting a volunteer concerned about safeguarding who doesn't believe in inner gender essence.

The explanation is in the next post because it's long and tedious but the answer is "at least £35,000 and probably more like £100,000".

I am just astounded. £100,000 not to defend the rights of girls but to remove them! This is just so mad it is hard to get your head around it. Shows that believing in gender wooooo can totally addle the brain. Even if they lose or reverse this policy the damage is done, none of the leadership or trustees can be entrusted to safeguard the interests of girls. Only a total clear out will reset the organisation.

BaronessBollyKnickers · 25/07/2020 08:51

So if they lose the case (and all that money is wasted) she'll have to go? You'd think?

KatieAlcock · 25/07/2020 08:47

The CEO I imagine.
It won't be any of the volunteer roles like Chief Guide.

Who is in charge at GG?

Who will have had to agree to spend all that money on a court case?

KatieAlcock · 25/07/2020 08:31

Also I do think it's a bit off to close my thread and not tell me. Is it worth me asking them to explain? "Lots of complaints" doesn't really seem like a good reason, if it's just a pile on.
I'd also really like a couple of posters to substantiate their accusations (on the other thread). Or just withdraw them.

We are a tiny unit. I pay my own census, as does the other leader
I know there are units that do this, but I personally have never known one to do this, and many of the ones near me would close if they did this as leaders can't afford this.
So all the census money comes from parents generally. Though in a way it's worse if GG are spending volunteers' own money. At least girls don't have to hold a gender identity of girl to join.

@Saxa23, could you please confirm if you actually know where the money GG are spending on legal costs is coming from? Because you told OP in your first post that it wasn't subs, but then your subsequent posts suggest you aren't actually aware yourself. And if you do know and it isn't subs, what is funding the case?

SophocIestheFox · 25/07/2020 07:25

That sounds like a good start for your claim, Katie. Have chucked a donation your way, good luck with the next phase!

VickyBHF · 25/07/2020 06:42

@NotAGirl thanks for this. @KatieAlcock I have donated. Well done

Lamahaha · 25/07/2020 05:46

Should I be wrong and the worst happen we're here for you. You're not alone. There are thousands, hundreds of thousands, of us behind you and together we can raise the money you need.

This. I dug before and I'll dig again.

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/07/2020 03:02

Thank you Katie. Good luck with the case. I was writing on your other thread and tried to post but it had disappeared. Have pledged some money to your cause.

DialSquare · 25/07/2020 00:07

@NotAGirl

Graphista if you go onto the crowdjustice site and search for 'Katie Alcock' you'll find the details for donations and yes every donation will help. If you've not donated through crowdjustice before they ask for voluntary donations to their running costs and default I think to 10%. They do extremely well by doing this and you can change your voluntary donation to them to be 0.
Since Allison Bailey's case, I always make sure to not include the extra tip now.
NotAGirl · 24/07/2020 23:59

Katie, well done on this first victory. I've donated and will again as you need more money.

We are a tiny unit. I pay my own census, as does the other leader. We are also parents within our unit and pay full subs. Obviously other units do whatever they have to do in their circumstances.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 24/07/2020 23:45

No worries dial

I always seem to get to threads just before they go boom...and I’m only on page 1

Graphista · 24/07/2020 23:37

If you want mixed sex and single 'gender' (whatever that means), fine - be open about it, shout it from the rooftops. But they know that would cause their membership to dwindle. So they deceive and lie, knowing full well that for most people 'girl' means biological female. It's despicable. exactly! So don't even have the courage of their supposed convictions!

If they're SO SURE they're right then why aren't they being public and open about it?! Because they know DAMN WELL it'd be the end of GG

MannymanMunroe · 24/07/2020 23:36

Sorry for not being clear. Yes, the termly amount we charge our parents includes all the costs you list, including the census charge. I just break it down in my head between "true subs" (hire costs and expenses for activities), which I have some control over and which I have to ensure involves value for money for the parents; and the census charge, over which I have no control and have no choice but to charge. Hope that makes sense! I was just trying to break it down that some of the money paid by parents goes to individual units and actually benefits the guides materially on a weekly basis; and some goes to GGUK to pay for all the things they need to pay for to administer the organisation.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 24/07/2020 23:35

I was an assistant at a unit once that had trouble getting parents to pay census. Far too busy and important to write us a cheque. We got so fed up on chasing it for months on end whilst running short as we'd had to use unit funds to pay it, we just increased the cost of subs to cover it and stopped asking for it on top. Of course the amount changes every year but as our outgoings were quite low we could cover the rise for a few years before needing to put subs up again.

(Fwiw we did have provisions for families in financial hardship but no-one ever wanted the help)

DialSquare · 24/07/2020 23:32

dial

It was on aibu

Thanks Rufus. I do look at other boards but must have got my timings wrong on that one.
KatieAlcock · 24/07/2020 23:30

Yes, @NoSquirrels, most units operate like that. It's rare to charge parents a separate lump sum. It's also rare for leaders to pay their own census - as a unit in a university town, I couldn't ask student leaders to pay for volunteering and it's not something GG expect either.

OP posts:
IloveJKRowling · 24/07/2020 23:28

My DD won't be joining GG over this.

It's the deception and lying and safeguarding breaches that I can't get over.

To change from single sex to mixed sex and deliberately withhold that information from parents and girls - and not seek their consent (e.g. a change from single to mixed sex accommodation on trips). It's just unbelievably shady.

If you want mixed sex and single 'gender' (whatever that means), fine - be open about it, shout it from the rooftops. But they know that would cause their membership to dwindle. So they deceive and lie, knowing full well that for most people 'girl' means biological female. It's despicable.

NoSquirrels · 24/07/2020 23:27

X-post Manny. No unit I’ve been associated with has ever done anything but ask for an amount per term - no breakdown of costs - and money on top for specific trips.

NoSquirrels · 24/07/2020 23:23

@MannymanMunroe I’m not sure I understand- are you saying the census money is paid somehow without parents contributing? Surely not - how would that work?

GG units ask for ‘subs’ per term. We pay up. Leaders of unite distribute funds to their bills as needed - hall hire, general ‘census’ overheads, activities & equipment.

My £30 a term pays in proportion a bit of everything.

Doesn’t it?

MannymanMunroe · 24/07/2020 23:21

I don't know about other units, Katie, but we break it down for parents between census money and activity money (subs). We might spread the cost over the year, but it is a clear separate amount. You are right , though, the amount we have to ask for to cover the census is a lot more than we need to cover the costs of running the unit.
