Update on my case, and on exactly how much Girlguiding is spending of their money

As a charity. On fighting a volunteer concerned about safeguarding who doesn't believe in inner gender essence.

The explanation is in the next post because it's long and tedious but the answer is "at least £35,000 and probably more like £100,000".

Who's funding their legal costs? Are GG splashing their own/their members' money about or have they had support from somewhere to pay for this?

The angry person upthread suggested they're not funding it via their members. So if the members aren't paying, who is?

Beamur · 25/07/2020 10:39

I doubt any girls were asked to leave. Gender non conformity is pretty widespread in the GG community amongst girls and leaders.
I don't know if any boys have actually asked to join, ditto transwomen as leaders/helpers.
Which in a way makes this even more tenuous. They're committing significant funds to fight a principle which is mostly, if not entirely speculative.

Tootsweets23 · 25/07/2020 10:27

God @Datun that is even worse! I mean great gender GC girls still are allowed to stay but it is just confirmation that their logic makes no sense and therefore this is all just about pleasing men and boys and screwing women and girls. Soul destroying how callous an organisation it is.

BigGee · 25/07/2020 10:23

Those non conforming girls who WERE put of of GG, will they be allowed to return? Receive an apology? Such a shitty thing to do to a child.

MrsWombat · 25/07/2020 10:20

I wondered where the other thread went. Glad I found this one.

Datun · 25/07/2020 10:16

@Datun

Whilst I'm delighted that they are keeping gender nonconforming girls, how does that sit with the rules?

Keeping girls who identify as boys directly undermines the entire premise of admitting boys who identify as girls.

Either those boys are girls, in which case the transboys are boys, or they're not.

The rank double standards alone should have their entire case thrown out.

I'm highlighting my own comment, because I don't want anyone to think I'm not happy for gender non-conforming girls to be included. Obviously, it would be outrageous for them to be excluded, given how the girl guides pride themselves on promoting girls.

And I know that originally the guides adhered to the ideology by wanting to exclude them. And were persuaded to reverse that decision.

I'm just highlighting the hypocrisy of encouraging nonconformity in girls, as an organisation, but simultaneously being unable to include them because you're committed to a sexist ideology.

The cognitive dissonance should be making their heads explode.

@Datun actually I've been infuriated at how little the MSM are reporting on this. GirlGuiding is a huge organisation and should be under scrutiny in this matter but then the MSM in this country seem to balk at doing any real journalism these days! [/quote]
Yes, it's a bit of a puzzle. Sometimes they report, sometimes they don't. It's like they have a set of rules that are inconsistent and unknowable.

However, with everything else coming together, hopefully they will realise it's a story that is of great national interest.

Samson vs Goliath efforts
Well, my hair has grown a bit in lockdown (Sorry!)

Grumblyberries · 25/07/2020 10:10

oh I'm glad to hear that's not the case any more. I hope they see sense about the rest of the policies too!

Clymene · 25/07/2020 10:01

Well done Katie and thank you for your Samson vs Goliath efforts on behalf of girls. It takes a huge amount of courage to do what you're doing. I'll do a bit more digging later today.

Beamur · 25/07/2020 10:00

The managing out of transboys has been dropped. No girl identifying as a boy will asked to leave - it was in the policy but isn't now.
I do hope that this case brings this issue to a head.
GG is still a great experience for many girls and it is a shame that this has cast a shade as I do think, deep down, they do think they're doing the right thing.

KatieAlcock · 25/07/2020 09:57

They did at least change that, after Helen and I complained. But they still exclude - explicitly - many adults who are both legally and biologically female.

OP posts:
Shedbuilder · 25/07/2020 09:56

Yes, the PR they're going to get from this will ruin them. So many parents who have no idea of what's been going on will suddenly realise.

Grumblyberries · 25/07/2020 09:50

At least girls don't have to hold a gender identity of girl to join.

I thought this was part of the problem? That girls who wanted to identify as boys were managed out and told Guides was not for them? That's one of the aspects I thought was a real shame, as Guides used to be a good place for girls who enjoyed some non-typically-feminine pursuits to flourish. (Not always; I know Brownies in particular also had the reputation of being for good little cleaning, baking, home-making girls, but Guides and beyond at least used to include a lot of 'girls can do anything' stuff as well)

Tootsweets23 · 25/07/2020 09:47

Exactly @Datun - GG have lost no matter which way the case goes. I hope they lose bigly but even if they don't they are dead in the long run as they are the pretendy girls organisation that actually centres men and boys. Who wants their girl in that environment?

Datun · 25/07/2020 09:41

@Tootsweets23

It is extraordinary for them to continue this route considering the volume off problems in this area regarding kids. Whether it is the Tavistock, the Kiera Bell case, the noises from government. It is so clear that they shouldn't have touched this with a 10 foot barge pole and instead of using a new CEO to clear the decks they've doubled down. Moronic.
Completely agree. And showing up mob handed with a bunch of high flying lawyers? It looks so bad.

As people have pointed out, it's David and Goliath and Erin Brockovich rolled into one.

Plus, it's now absolutely guaranteed to hit the newspapers. Win or lose the whole country will know the girl guides are allowing boys to sleep in the same tents as girls, and deliberately withholding that info from parents.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 25/07/2020 09:38

Even if you are only allowed one thread katie (and i agree that in the past MNHQ have allowed two) you should be allowed to agree which one goes

GilderoyLockdown · 25/07/2020 09:36

@KatieAlcock

Also I do think it's a bit off to close my thread and not tell me. Is it worth me asking them to explain? "Lots of complaints" doesn't really seem like a good reason, if it's just a pile on. I'd also really like a couple of posters to substantiate their accusations (on the other thread). Or just withdraw them.
You'll be waiting a while for that. Accusations of transphobia made by people who can't possibly be expected to substantiate them are very common on here.
KatieAlcock · 25/07/2020 09:33

I've asked MN why the other thread has gone.
I have previously had a thread in here and on AIBU so that in itself isn't a problem.

Thank you Katie. Star

The stress and paperwork and admin must be immense.

A little dig to help support you is easy in comparison.

@MannymanMunroe

saxa23 I don't know what your agenda is, but unless you know of magical porridge pot churning out legal funds at GGUK headquarters, the money for this litigation is coming out of census money. Please don't insult the intelligence of people like me - a Unit Leader and a solicitor - unless you have knowledge to the contrary that you are willing to share.

Katie, I've just discussed your update with DH (seriously shit hot litigation lawyer). We both deal with litigants in person on a regular basis, and find it astonishing that GGUK would argue the direct/indirect discrimination point on your claim form, filed when you were unrepresented, when the particulars make it clear that your claim is for indirect discrimination. However, I imagine that whoever is dealing with this on the other side is taking instructions from insurers. I wonder if they are worried about a floodgate of similar cases and are trying anything to nip yours in the bud.

I suspect your point about insurers and floodgates is on the money.

Katie Thank you. Big organisations trying to out-lawyer individuals is not good for society, especially women and girls. Thank you for standing up to them.

MissMarplesHandbag · 25/07/2020 08:51

I didn’t know about your case @KatieAlcock. Thank you for the update. Glad to hear it went well in court, and I’ve just pledged to your crowdfunder. Good luck.
