A line from an article by Nadia Whittome, MP. She was so pleased with it that she also tweeted it.

When did our MPs become this stupid?

highame · 28/07/2020 15:16

I'm just going for a shix - is that woke enough😁

MsSafina · 28/07/2020 15:03

We must not fetishise debate

Shut up womxn!

MsSafina · 28/07/2020 14:59

It's going down well in the comments. Not.

I particularly liked this response: "Assigned mother at birth. Identifies as childless."

Cue flashback to toddler tantrums and me thinking, "yeah, been there, done that..."

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/07/2020 20:23

‘Y’all’ when used by British people too.
It says ‘I am desperate to sound American.’

Fanthorpe · 27/07/2020 18:17

I agree with the use of folk/folx as an indicator. It’s meant to sound whimsical but it reminds me too much of the ‘Neues Volk’used in German propaganda in the 30’s.

Goosefoot · 27/07/2020 14:32

@TheRealMcKenna

My general rule of thumb is that anyone who uses womxn, mxn or humxn is usually talking utter bollxcks.

Here’s a perfect example.

It's interesting - I've heard several commentators on critical race theory say that it is the mirror image of white supremacy, based on precisely the same kind of race essentialism. And so could, in a heartbeat, be reversed to support a white supremacy project.

Or, for that matter, some sort of non-white supremacy project.

I mean, this tweet is clearly biological race essentialism of the kind 19th century racists and eugenicists believed in.

highame · 27/07/2020 13:23

😂

Agree. Folk / folx is also a good predictor if twattishness.

The Portlandia effect. Interesting article about life imitating art.

CarnivorousYoni · 27/07/2020 11:03

Womxn and non-binary mother-identifying folx?

There's just no practical way that can viewed as useful, accessible terminology. The only sensible response is open mockery.

highame · 27/07/2020 10:47

At least, for now, it US moms and womxn (whatever they are)

Yes, being a politician is ultimately about pragmatism and compromise to achieve your goals. Someone upthread described Nadia W as an activist - I think that is the problem. I see being an activist and politician as two different things. Activists raise awareness and make demands - politicians translate that into something practical and workable.

This comment "wins" the thread for me.

It's the Corbyn legacy.

He too was an Activist and not a politician.

smallskylight · 26/07/2020 16:46

I listened. It was terrible. And dishonest. When asked about phrases like ' people who menstruate.' her reply is ' Oh I don't know why people use those terms.' Oh of course you do!

It was just ridiculous - the usual lies about GC arguments, the usual dishonesty in responses.

MsSafina · 26/07/2020 13:41

Here's Moran talking about what a woman is. Mind boggling idiocy.

Fanthorpe · 26/07/2020 13:32

Sorry! The I disagree crept in from somewhere else!! I don’t disagree!

Fanthorpe · 26/07/2020 13:30

I disagree. I think It’s zealotry, she’s taken the mantras of fighting against oppression, no paseran etc.

When I first came across the GC argument I was appalled, how can you be so intolerant of difference?! Then after examining it and listening to the arguments I realised that it was much more complicated than that. You have to listen, you have to discuss, or everyone loses.

BovaryX · 26/07/2020 10:02

the real reason appears to be that she fears her side would lose the debate

Absolutely. Because #no debate means can't debate.

nepeta · 25/07/2020 23:33

@smallskylight

I get the impression now that certain MPs consider compromise as something dirty to be avoided rather than the way to achieve goals that work for the vast majority Yes, being a politician is ultimately about pragmatism and compromise to achieve your goals. That is a good point. She has chosen a side for her activism and has no interest in viewing all the data or all the different rights which might be affected in this case. Her activist goal is to shut down all debate, and the real reason appears to be that she fears her side would lose the debate, at least in the sense that clashing rights would have to be addressed.
Fanthorpe · 25/07/2020 23:28

a HoC full of activists and careerist party members is a disaster for our democracy.

Fanthorpe · 25/07/2020 23:26

I agree smallskylight there is a difference.
