The misogyny here is vomit inducing. A woman being berated for NOT refusing to wear a face mask just not shopping as much, while men are drinking and fighting in those magic pubs where the virus cant be passed on.

He tried to say she was refusing to wear a mask and then berated her for not wanting to walk around John Lewis with one on.

She wasnt refusing to wear a mask She just said she would be shopping a bit less.

Gaslighting prick

@ThatsHowWeRowl

Argh, just watched it again - right from the start, he is screwing up his face as if he cannot understand what she is saying at all. He literally doesn't have a neutral face on him, as if he is actually listening and thinking, for any of it. He knows he is being filmed and it will be going on social media.

I wonder if that's what he does with his wife at home - when she starts talking, he starts pulling that face as if she is being soooooo ridiculous? It is gaslighting actually isn't it?

It's bizarre, isn't it? She isn't saying anything remotely controversial or idiotic, while coming out with ridiculous statements like she should go six times for twenty minutes, and she's the unreasonable one? He's basically ordering her to do the consumerist equivalent of "lie back and think of England." You won't enjoy it but it's good for the country so get on with it, woman!
Justhadathought · 22/07/2020 09:59

I do feel sorry for the caller herself, I do wonder how aware a (?middle aged) John Lewis shopper who doesn’t shop online, who phones in to a radio show in good faith, knew she’d end up being trolled and bullied by randoms on Twitter

She's not middle aged. This is know, because it was my daughter ( single parent). I've warned her to keep away from twitter....I knew as soon as she said 'John Lewis' she'd be getting dismissed as a "middle aged, middle class, right wing bigot". TBH, I'm not even sure why she rang in. She loves an argument and a debate, and can sometimes be contrarian.

She's inherited the J.Lewis thing from me. I don't like shopping for leisure, and I certainly don't like internet shopping...and can get most of what I want in there, all under one roof. She however, does most shopping on-line anyway.

I wear a mask when I'm in there...and it certainly won't put me off...although I agree it can get a bit uncomfortable.

What this episode evidences is how much people project on to what others say to suit their own prejudices and agendas, be they about age, class status, political persuasion, or whatever.

Destroyedpeople · 22/07/2020 09:51

Yes of course. But you get what I am saying too right?
As women we spend way too much time discussing what sad little men have said about this or that when they are just talking bollocks. It's how we have been socialised.
We should starve them of oxygen... not literally...Grin

damnthatanxiety · 22/07/2020 09:49

@Destroyedpeople

I don't even know who this O Brien character is. Don't understand why feminism threads are clogged up with what some obscure misogynist has said.
He's not obscure. In any case, why isn't this thread the place to discuss misogyny???Hmm
AntsInPenzance · 22/07/2020 09:42

Also I'm pretty sure that women can go to pubs and men can go shopping. Sorry, just not seeing the supposed misogyny Confused

AntsInPenzance · 22/07/2020 09:40

Not sure how this is misogynistic as his argument doesn't seem to have anything to do with her being a woman.

IloveJKRowling · 22/07/2020 09:32

once you have to wear masks in shops, people are going to be far less inclined to just go in for a browse, they are going to get their essentials and go

And if we want life to get as close to normal as possible, this is actually a good thing. We need to keep levels of the virus low or we're back in lockdown / overwhelmed hospitals / people dying in large numbers (example - see Texas). The shorter the amount of time people are in sharing an enclosed space, the lower the risk.

It's a shame, yes but it's what happens in a pandemic. We can't deny covid biology.

Having the position that woman has is absolutely fine and actually better for public health at large.

And yes, JOB is a nasty, misogynistic bully as he's displayed on many an occasion.

ThatsHowWeRowl · 22/07/2020 09:21

And what she is saying is totally true - rightly or wrongly, once you have to wear masks in shops, people are going to be far less inclined to just go in for a browse, they are going to get their essentials and go. And yes, meanwhile the men get to go to their pubs and golf clubs without wearing one.

ThatsHowWeRowl · 22/07/2020 09:17

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 22/07/2020 09:15

Its the drip drip drip of ridiculous little men that causes problems

Bloke does sound like a plonker....

ThatsHowWeRowl · 22/07/2020 09:10

That headline totally doesn't reflect what this woman was saying and she was making a totally valid point which he massively twisted.

I also fucking hate the way that JOB makes those faux 'puzzled' faces and head in hands, when someone says something he disagrees with, as if what they have just said is so totally outrageous it's unbelievable, when actually it's fairly reasonable. He does this all the time, seemingly to add weight to his own viewpoint and its absolutely pathetic.

PumbaasCucumbas · 22/07/2020 08:27

Lots of horrible misogynistic comments and ‘karens’ in that thread along with the COVID hyperbole.

I do feel sorry for the caller herself, I do wonder how aware a (?middle aged) John Lewis shopper who doesn’t shop online, who phones in to a radio show in good faith, knew she’d end up being trolled and bullied by randoms on Twitter.

I’d be mortified if something like that happened to my mum for example (it’s the sort of opinion she might have).

Datun · 22/07/2020 06:15

Isn't this the twit who criticised Posie Parker with 'Why would you be uncomfortable with me in the changing room next to you? What on Earth do you think I'll do???"

Followed with "Of course I wouldn't send my daughters into the men's changing room."

And ended by soothing a transwoman with "In know you don't want to be in the mens, I quite understand".

Ugh.

Collidascope · 22/07/2020 05:53

He's disingenuous and aggressive, as usual. Pretending to be surprised that she will shop less because it's uncomfortable, and making out that that makes her selfish. News flash, Jaime. Humans are pretty selfish. Going to John Lewis and spending a few hundred pounds on non-essentials was never about being selfless, was it? You could just as easily accuse her of selfishness for frittering rather than donating to charity.
And the thing about going there 6 times for 20 minutes? Jesus, can you imagine being married to this guy if that's the standard of his argument, and you have the audacity to disagree with him on something? Poor wife.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 21/07/2020 23:47

I'm similar tbh. Not a big fan of masks, no medical reason or need. And while I have them and I'm willing to use them they're more of a "just in case" as I've avoided so far places where I might need to wear one.

TheGreatWave · 21/07/2020 23:43

Tbf this attitude is prevalent on any mask thread on MN. I am not sure it is misogyny or gaslighting, more people incredibly hard of thinking and struggling to accept that some people would rather avoid the shops then wear a mask.

The comments on Twitter are exactly the same as on the boards here. It is tiresome and I am fed up of trying to simply explain that I will wear a mask but I will avoid situations if possible where I need to.

NothingIsWrong · 21/07/2020 23:42

This is my position as well. I will wear a mask where it's required. You can't also mandate that I'm happy about it and will go back to my normal habits. Used to love a mooch round the shops with a bit of an impulse buy, but stopping that is the new normal for me.

MotheringShites · 21/07/2020 23:24

I’m not in the slightest bit surprised by Jo’B’s sneering take on a perfectly reasonable position. I am a little taken aback by the amount of people who clearly didn’t actually listen to the call before commenting. That headline is a terrible misrepresentation of what she actually was saying.

Destroyedpeople · 21/07/2020 23:23

'Funny that'...I think I made a fair comment. I don't mind spending time getting my point across. ..
There's threads all the time these days..
''Twatt man A' said this Twatt man B said that...
.....

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 21/07/2020 23:17

Thank you TheInebriati that's exactly what I meant.

I find it interesting that people are willing to waste their time on such a "pointless" thread, by explaining to OP just how pointless is it and how wrong she is. Funny that.

HeIenaDove · 21/07/2020 23:16

That is a fair point @Destroyedpeople We do spend too much time on them.

OP posts:
Destroyedpeople · 21/07/2020 23:13

It's not what gaslighting means no.

Waffleswaffles · 21/07/2020 23:09

I am not sure that is what gaslighting means.

Destroyedpeople · 21/07/2020 23:06

I just think that we spend too much time talking about what ridiculous little men who don't deserve the attention have said. Reinforces their false sense of importance. ..
