Reported rather breathlessly in the Graun

www.theguardian.com/books/2020/jul/17/munroe-bergdorf-receives-landmark-book-deal-for-trans-manifesto

Among other things she’s going to tell us all that the experience being a ‘ciswoman’ has changed over the years. Hmm

‘my intelligence has been undermined, and I’ve been underestimated a lot in a lot of different instances.’

Sounds a bit Dunning-Kruger to me, to be honest.

Well you can pre-order it on Amazon. It’s 17 quid. Will be following sales and content with interest. A whole year away. The suspense...

HaveaStock · 17/07/2020 12:31

Oh God Yes! Red Lemonade. Jeez I remember posting a link to that on here - 8 years ago - aaaarggh! Just went back and read a bit. Hilarious. Yes definitely would read that. Almost looking forward to the book coming out now.

NotBadConsidering · 17/07/2020 12:22

Munroe's got a six figure advance, NotBad?

That’s what the article says, after a bidding war with 11 publishers. That’s what Bergdorf says anyway...

Did anyone ever read the take down of 50 Shades of Grey by a blogger called Red Lemonade? I vote for her to read it so we don’t have to because that was an epic analysis.

AnyOldPrion · 17/07/2020 11:48

I’m struggling to understand the market for this book.

Suspect it might be the same market that bought Pippa Middleton’s Party book.

You know what’s most frustrating? This is going to be a stupendous flop. But the publishing industry is so far up its own arse that they have no idea.

And then struggling authors, who are on the verge of breaking through will have their advances cut even smaller and more of them will be pushed out when their first book doesn’t sell quite enough copies.

This kind of misguided ‘celebrity‘ advance is one of the things that is causing smaller scale writers to be pushed out. It makes me want to scream.

This would make the perfect cover, no? Yes, such a positive role model. Wear your scold’s bridle with pride Womxn!

Munroe's got a six figure advance, NotBad?

Interestingly, Hodder and Stoughton gave Shon Faye a massive advance for their missive on trans history - I've never seen it published yet.

Advances are given as a sort of loan against sales. So, if you get a big advance you have to sell a lot of books before you'll start getting royalties.

Munro can't even write a tweet with good grammar...

Trish Goddard has put in her order already... (Munroe ALWAYS makes sure we can see Trish’s gushing comments on her Instagram)

HaveaStock · 17/07/2020 11:33

Oh Wow. Judging by the way Munroe writes (I seldom can get through a sentence without having to go back and reread it because it sounds slightly ‘off’ or ungrammatical) THERES GOING TO BE A LOT OF PICTURES IN IT Grin

JellySlice · 17/07/2020 11:11

Change? What change? Has women's biology changed over the centuries? Has the burden of child-bearing changed over the centuries? Has the physical reality of rape changed over the centuries? Has the imposition of patriarchal control changed over the centuries?

Ignorant, arrogant nincompoop.

nauticant · 17/07/2020 11:10

I was wondering just the same NotBadConsidering.

Assuming this will have the sales we expect, it will lose Bloomsbury money. If that's true, it means they're hoping to extract value in some other way. I wonder what that other way is.

NotBadConsidering · 17/07/2020 10:56

If Bergdorf has been advanced a 6 figure sum, how many books need to sell in order to make a profit for anyone? Does anyone know how book profits work?

For cross reference, JK Rowling has sold more than 500 million books 😉.

QuarantineDream · 17/07/2020 10:55

@ContentiousOne

Imagine having the sheer gall to assert - in a book no less - that you, as a transwomen, know all about biological womanhood. It's nonsense. Very stereotypically male.
This 10000%

I think we should all demand sensitivity readers for this book.

Clymene · 17/07/2020 10:43

Well that's a book I expect to see piled up in the 99p stand at The Works.

Time to share this excellent article by Susan Dalgety I feel: www.scotsman.com/news/opinion/columnists/why-feminists-me-stand-jk-rowling-trans-rights-row-susan-dalgety-2910085

AbsintheFriends · 17/07/2020 10:39

The couple of sentences from MB in summary of the book are barely articulate. It doesn't bode well for the readability of the rest of it. (Though I'd bet my last rolo some underpaid woman of the ordinary unstunning variety will actually be doing the behind the scenes unglamorous shitwork of writing it.)

I think BLM made publishers aware that they need to get ahead in the diversity stakes. In the last month it's been great to see big new deals coming through for black women authors writing books that sound brilliant - a change for the better. However, I believe Bloomsbury have made a big miscalculation here. Anyone who actually wants an insight into MB's world can amply fill their boots on social media. I seriously doubt people will pay for that content. I look forward to flicking through the inevitable photo section when the hardback appears on a piled-high table in The Works.

TornadoOfSouls · 17/07/2020 10:17

Thanks Collidascope for the link.

The scope of this book seems ambitious, to put it mildly. One might say hubristic. And it kind of comes across as though MB hasn’t actually ever read anything about women in history or even about gender, power, race and all that stuff. They think we need men to tell us about being women. It’s staggering!

OP posts:
ThePurported · 17/07/2020 10:04

"I've gone into the depths of where gender came from, because it hasn't always existed in [the way] we think about gender today," said Bergdorf. "What it's like to be a cisgender woman today is not what it was in the middle ages, or the 1950s, or even the 1980s."

No woman would have identified as 'cis' in the 1980s. This BS hadn't been invented, although Janice Raymond predicted it - with frightening accuracy - in Transsexual Empire.

Wondersense · 17/07/2020 09:43

@ThatsHowWeRowl That's what I thought.

Wondersense · 17/07/2020 09:41

@Collidascope Good comparison.

Vermeil · 17/07/2020 08:22

Fancy making a career for yourself as a professional transwoman, having that little to offer to the world yet making so much noise about it. 😣

NotBadConsidering · 17/07/2020 08:21

@SunsetBeetch

Maybe JKR is ghost writing it?
She is superb at fantasy fiction.
WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 17/07/2020 08:14

my intelligence has been undermined

Yeah, byyou, mate, every time you open your mouth.

ContentiousOne · 17/07/2020 08:10

You know, I'd be happy not to hear about MB anymore. They are a celebrity, no more, and nothing about their life or 'wisdom' is of interest or relevance to me.

If fools want to pay good money to read a male manifesto on womanhood, Goodluck to 'em, but it sounds like a waste of cash to me.
