Miriam Margolyes being a massive transphobe

She's criticising JKR - calling her conservative. Then she says, 'If you seriously want to be a woman you should be allowed to'. I think she imagines she can decide who 'seriously' wants to be a woman, rather than having to accept anyone who wants to identify.

Well, we seem to be arguing about one word here and you may be right.

However, I definitely got the impression that she thinks her opinion about who is a woman matters, and once you accept trans rights, it just doesn't.

Yep Kljnmw my TRA is adamant that because the equality act will remain in force women’s rights can’t - not won’t - but can’t be impacted by self ID

They insist the current process is ridiculously onerous and unfair

Strangely they don’t think I should be allowed to self ID as someone who can drive

“That would impact on others ppls safety”

Yes exactly!! That’s why I can’t just decide I can drive, buy a car & drive aboit because it would endanger other ppl....

The cognitive dissonance makes my head hurt!

Miriam Margoyles did a programme in the US. She went to visit some Preppers. They were really very distrusting of the gov't in general but loved Trump. She made one very interesting observation. She said how it was ironic that they were normally very sceptical and distrusting of the gov't, but in Trump's case they supported him unquestioningly and uncritically, and fell for his shtick hook, line and sinker.

I think this could apply to quite a few on this issue. They are warriors against 'the man', but accept certain faces of the man without question or critical analysis. They even fall for the notion that women being shut out of the conservation and dismissed is progressive.

Sure, anyone can call themselves what they want. I want to live my life as I wish as well. But I don't expect to force others or the law to be changed in order to go along with a charade or impinge on their lives of others. In some cases, very vulnerable women.

Kljnmw3459 · 13/07/2020 15:18

The thing about people coming out in support of twaw is that so many of them seemingly have no clue about what is happening. On Twitter there are many TRAs who will say that women's rights won't be impacted because there won't be any changes to the GRA.

Goosefoot · 13/07/2020 14:47

I feel a little badly for actors at times. Most good actors IMO are not idiots, but they are also pretty regular people. Then they get asked all of these questions in interviews about things they may or may not know about, or have thought about, sometimes personal stuff. Ugh.

She says 'if you seriously want to become a woman'. She thinks that if she thought a transwoman's motivation 'wasn't serious', she wouldn't have to recognise them as a woman. That 'if' is transphobic.

Again, only going from your quote as I can't see the article where it's used (could be in that Independent link but they are basically unreadable on my phone!) I don't think that's transphobic. Most if not all TW would argue they are "serious" - isn't that what the whole issue is about? A casual 'wanting to become the opposite sex' is how trans people classify and dismiss detransitioners - not really trans, they weren't serious enough (in their souls, in their own valid minds, not in any measurable sense).

She said nothing about herself being the gatekeeper. She said 'if you serious want' - ie the person in question. Anyone can say they are serious, it's hardly a gatekeeping criterion!

Deliriumoftheendless · 13/07/2020 14:34

@TheProdigalKittensReturn

'If you seriously want to be a woman you should be allowed to'

What does that mean, though? How is that meant to work? It's not like you can go on a course and get your official License To Woman at the end of it.

😂
RoyalCorgi · 13/07/2020 14:31

I've always liked her. She is, however, as another poster said, a gobshite.

I think the fact that her tutor was wearing stockings and suspenders under his trousers was a bit of a giveaway as to the kind of person he was, doesn't it?

merrymouse · 13/07/2020 14:27

I like her and I think she is a great actor.

However, that doesn't mean I believe she has the foggiest idea about the impact of Self ID on the GRA or any of the subjects that JK Rowling has researched in great depth. I also doubt that she knows much about plants (magical or otherwise) or midwifery or nuns.

Unfortunately, I think very few actors will support JKR, because 1). They are paid to act, not to think and 2). They work in a very precarious profession where at any time 90% of actors are unemployed.

See also: Billy Bragg, Owen Jones, beardy woke-bros.

I wonder what these men would think if they knew they were on the same 'side' as Jim Davidson?
He's not really very pure in his woke thoughts is he? And we all know anybody associated with someone impure is impure by association.
Certainly had Jim Davidson come out as a terf, this would have been thrown at all the GC feminists as proof of how wrong and awful we are - to dare share even one opinion with such a man, even if for completely different reasons ...

I wonder if Billy or LOJ would take the time to self reflect what it might mean for them to be in agreement with Jim Davidson. Or maybe just reflect that purity spirals aren't helpful.

Won't hold my breath.

Impatiens · 13/07/2020 14:11

I like her, so i'm very disappointed she's taken such a thoughtless tack on such a crucial issue. I think a lot of these people are under the impression that a transwoman is someone who has had their male genitalia removed.

Every single actor in the UK can come of and loudly declared their allegiance to Mermaids and I'll still be wholly opposed to putting children on a medical pathway to sterilisation and little to no sexual function and allowing intact males into women's prisons.

That's where I stand.

PennyNotSoWise · 13/07/2020 14:01

😂 Jim Davidson. I think I'd need to take a good, hard look at myself if I found out he agreed with me on something. I certainly wouldn't be bragging about it.

SerenityNowwwww · 13/07/2020 13:52

Does she think that any women seriously want to become a man (and would she, lady bountiful like, allow this?)

NeurotrashWarrior · 13/07/2020 13:51

She says 'if you seriously want to become a woman'

It's like training for the marines or something.

Yes under many peoples definition of transphobia, her comments are transphobic.

Pudmyboy · 13/07/2020 13:49

It just sounds to me like rambling comments which have been pounced on as support for trans in the same vein as the statement from the Hogwarts backstabbers (in my view) did. And note that the article joins all the other bits on. No mention yet anywhere of the person who set up one of them (think Mugglenet?) saying JKR wasn't a transphobe. Don't know why I keep being disappointed by the media and so-called celebrities; and as said by nauticant, still should make NO difference to the application of such a procedure on young (or even older) people/kids

It does seem to be a ‘type’ doesn’t it? Loud, offensive, obnoxious, self obsessed...

NeurotrashWarrior · 13/07/2020 13:45

How filthy Nauticant? Grin

NeurotrashWarrior · 13/07/2020 13:44

I was musing over that other rubbish Scottish male comedian and his misogynistic rape jokes.

I swear that misogynists/Mra are using the twaw thing as a cloak of invisibility; "look I'm not a misogynist! I stand up for 'women!'"

lady69 · 13/07/2020 13:43

She is a gobshite.

nauticant · 13/07/2020 13:42

Miriam Margolyes was interviewed recently by Louis Theroux and in this very filthy interview (I'd never heard the like on Radio 4) you can hear that she is unconventional in many ways:

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08g4wm2

The interview did not have much from her in the way of common sense. It is though highly entertaining assuming you're happy with a fair bit of filth.

bishopgiggles · 13/07/2020 13:42

(It's notable that she misgenders this 'darling man' who was 'always meant to be a woman' throughout, revealing that she doesn't for a second think of him as female. Tut tut, such transphobia.)

Yes, that's a much more notable example!

NeurotrashWarrior · 13/07/2020 13:41

After checking, Sadly, she's not.

How ironic that she rt the post by MB about JK not being a scientist and then offers up Jim Davidson 🤣

Fanthorpe · 13/07/2020 13:39

Jim was also a bit handy with his fists as well, only towards women though I think?
