Miriam Margolyes being a massive transphobe

She's criticising JKR - calling her conservative. Then she says, 'If you seriously want to be a woman you should be allowed to'. I think she imagines she can decide who 'seriously' wants to be a woman, rather than having to accept anyone who wants to identify.

I thought the initial quote in the OP is very much TWAW and this one is heavily indicating "I don't want to talk about what I really think because it doesn't affect me and I don't want to 'get wet'". So yeah, cognitive dissonance.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/07/2020 19:02

I would have expected better from her to be honest. She doesn't usually tolerate nonsense no! She's full of stuff and nonsense.

She'd back trans people to be who they want to be a forcefully as she'd lead the action against any transgressor.

She is full of cognitive dissonance, always has been. Her left and right hands lead totally separate lives!

bishopgiggles · 14/07/2020 18:39

Ha and then at the end they refer to MM as 'an indomitable, questioning presence, wherever she might turn up. "I'm just me", Margolyes says. "And the surroundings have to cope with that".'

bishopgiggles · 14/07/2020 18:30

Just seen another interview with her, re her upcoming new show (what a surprise!). I'll quote:

"On the coast near Darwin she meets a group of indigenous transgender people from the nearby Tiwi islands, and asks them some very intimate questions. "I am on the fringes, I suppose, of being rather too direct in some quarters. I always thought that somebody who wanted to become a woman would have chopped their dick off."

The islanders are not offended and take her to a drag show at a nightclub that evening. "I didn't want to offend people. That's the crucial thing, isn't it, about transgender?

I know I'm a lesbian and I know I'm a woman , so I've sorted it out. But if you are on the way between one sex and another, how do you decide when you've arrived? It's hugely complicated. Look at poor JK Rowling She's dived into the pool and got very wet."
Unlike other Harry Potter actors, Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout, hasn't criticised Rowling's views on transgender issues. "I was asked to make a public statement and I didn't want to. I just thought I've made enough public statements."

How telling, that someone who prides themselves on being direct - "too direct" - and is a female who presumably is same-sex attracted, felt this issue just happened to be the point in her life at which she'd stop making statements.

It's so transparent.

There is a type of woman who likes to pull the ladder up behind her. I met a few working in the City.

leeloo1 · 14/07/2020 12:59

So miriam margoyles, who had the privilege of attending an all all-female college (Newnham college, Cambridge) now doesn't think other women should be afforded that privilege? Nice!

God she's so fucking dull.

She spouts all sorts of bullshit for attention.

Best treated as such. She's a vapid, rent a quote celeb, which people fall for every . single . fucking . time.

Deadringer · 13/07/2020 20:31

@zanahoria

She has a history of saying things for effect, like her comments about wanting Boris Johnson to die of Covid, now she thinks JK is a fascist. She makes out she is a rebel but just saying things that are extremely orthodox among luvvies and for an old woman, she is extremely childish.
This exactly sums MM up. I have always considered her a complete arse.
highame · 13/07/2020 20:22

To be fair Miriam Margoyles has academic credentials

I realised that when I later read right to the end of the article. Whoops, but she was a bit of an arse in the interview and it annoys me saying that about a woman

merrymouse · 13/07/2020 20:10

She's an author, has academic credentials, not an actor who is skilled.

To be fair Miriam Margoyles has academic credentials. However, that doesn't mean she knows or cares much about this subject.

merrymouse · 13/07/2020 20:09

Fantasy authors however are a different matter

JK Rowling has been involved in charities that benefit women and girls living in difficult conditions for years. Of course she should be able to talk about the impact of the GRA on women, if for no other reason than she is one.

Should leave it to the doctors, psychologists and other experts who work this field, rather than armchair experts

If you are talking about treatment for gender dysphoria, experts working at GIDS have made it clear that their concerns have been ignored.

She played Lady Whiteadder, a puritan obsessed with the "thingy-shaped turnip."

Sums up the gender cult perfectly.

@lionheart

I remember her anecdote (on Graham Norton I think) about cycling through a park as a teen and realising there was a man hiding in a tree and masturbating. She stopped and offered to give him a hand, according to her account.

She likes to shock and to ramp up the drama.

Sounds like a massive attention seeker.
FreshAirAndSunlight · 13/07/2020 17:37

Absolutely agree. Should leave it to the doctors, psychologists and other experts who work this field, rather than armchair experts 👍

She's an awful person, will say anything for media attention. Just ignore her and hope she fades away into oblivion where she belongs.

Frankly, having read through the comments, the only thing for the UK to settle this once and for all is to insist on linking this TWAW issue to those inheritance laws (firstborn male gets lordship and such...) The rest of the world may perish, but those laws give you gals a fighting chance.

I was hugely taken to task recently over the phrase "if trans men are men..." I can't remember what I went on to say but it was about the necessary healthcare needed to support them with gynaecological issues and maternity care etc.

It was a facebook head tilt and "do you see the problem with that?" As if I'd personally just killed someone. reminds me of tinkerbell

I was quite shaken actually that my language had been policed so much when I was actually pointing out the additional support a transman would need if they chose to have a child and give birth, if their womb etc was still intact and working because a transman is biologically female.

On another thread someone was arguing with me that yes, sex was real etc, but still took me to task over some sort of semantic gymnastics.

SunsetBeetch · 13/07/2020 15:59

@HandsOffMyRights

Disappointed when women who are old enough to get it, don't. Same with Shirley Manson.
Are you referring to this (frankly disgusting) tweet? I've just seen it, it's AWFUL.
