Self Identifying Women wanted

Our local Rape Crisis Centre is advertising for volunteers to be trained to respond to peopl calling for help. The advert stipulates that you've got to be over 18 and that you self identify as a woman.

So if I were the victim of a horrendous sexual assault I would phone for help/ support and possibly end up speaking to a "self identifying woman" who has a penis.

Rape is something overwhelmingly perpetrated by men

That should be only

I’ve (unfortunately) used that centre after I was assaulted last year. They were fantastic and staffed by some wonderful women, who I imagine would not in a million years entertain the idea of a penis possessor anywhere near the place. The advert and the reality may be two different things
I'm so sorry that you had to use them.

I have always supported their work and heard good things about them. However I was really shocked yesterday when a friend shared the ad for volunteers and I read the bit about self-identifying as a woman. They need to address people's valid concerns.

That is about as clear cut as you can get for discrimination based on gender reassignment.

This sentence is the most shocking of all:

As a women only service, SARSVL does not work with transgender men or boys

From Butterer's link to the Leeds centre. Here is an example of true transphobia angry

This is unreal. What the fuck?

I think I’m actually going to have to lie down.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 10/07/2020 10:08

@Dances

Why is this surprising? One of the Rape risks centres in Scotland is RUN by a Transwoman who lied at interview about being male.

All Rape crisis centres have be 'inclusive' to get funding from the government

What the fuck do you think women on this board have been talking about for the last 5 years?

It makes me feel so desperately sad and frightened for women and our daughters. It has been fucking years and nobody is listening. Everyone is turning a blind eye and burying their head. I’m actually in despair that nobody seems to give a fuck about us.
fascinated · 10/07/2020 10:00

Entry restricted to those performing received notions of femininity, it appears.

I think this sector has been the target of lobbying at the highest levels.

They could use the EA exemptions. This is one of the clearest, if not the clearest, example of it being justified. But they seem either not to want to, or fear the consequences of not doing so.

SisterWendyBuckett · 10/07/2020 07:37

As a women only service, SARSVL does not work with transgender men or boys

So a child - a girl who was born female but says she is a boy - will not be helped if they have been sexually assaulted?

Sexually assaulted on their actual female body.

Seriously, you could not make
this misogynistic, sexist shit up.

There's no way RC thinks that having a male voice on the line will help women.

It's utterly impossible in fact.

It may reduce sex calls, but only while the man is answering.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/07/2020 04:00

Their website says "All the women who answer the phones and emails are trained in supporting survivors of sexual violence."

No mention of the fact that some of the women might be trans women, aka men. I imagine that if a woman plucked up the courage to phone to talk to someone about their abuse and got through only to hear a male voice then that would be traumatic in itself.

'On the Cambridge advert it also says: the applicant needs to be
"Interested in discussing and learning about rape and sexual violence, and its impacts on women and girls"'

Yikes.

GCGayDad · 10/07/2020 00:44

On the Cambridge advert it also says: the applicant needs to be
"Interested in discussing and learning about rape and sexual violence, and its impacts on women and girls"

For a natal woman, such interest would be important and would involve compassion and an innate empathy. But interest in this from a male-bodied person...? You can see how some male-bodied people might have an 'interest' in this in a totally different way. Angry

What on earth are such services thinking of to facilitate this kind of situation?

Onestepup · 10/07/2020 00:39

Another reason why T should not be lumped together with LGB.

ShinyFootball · 10/07/2020 00:23

There are a few which is great. LGBT+ and a specific trans one.

aside: why their homepage needs to state they are 'sex worker affirmative' is beyond me. It feels like a political statement? Because surely we're past the 'people who get paid for sex can't be raped' point in society? A weird one. What does 'affirmative' mean? )

I would think it would be really great for more services aimed at particular groups (men, trans people etc) and volunteers from those groups.

Rape is something overwhelmingly perpetrated by men. A male voice picking up the phone feels not right to me, whether the caller is male or female tbh. Keep general services for the people who set them up and paid for them, and have really good services for those who fall outside that and would rather speak to someone who gets it, as it were.

JaniceBattersby · 10/07/2020 00:23

There’s an advert for a rape crisis worker in Northamptonshire currently and they specifically want a female.

Incidentally their services cater for all people that have suffered from sexual assault, male or female.

ShinyFootball · 10/07/2020 00:12

The other thing is that there are plenty of reports etc about trans people being especially at risk of sexual assault etc.

I have no doubt that young people who are confused and looking for acceptance are vulnerable, at risk from predators etc

We also know that trans men have been raped by men who saw them as women.

Are there any plans to set up trans helplines about this? I would think that would be really beneficial. As the trans experience is different, and talking to someone from the same group would be much more helpful, to my mind.

I'll have a Google actually as that is a service that I would totally get behind.

Blossom513 · 10/07/2020 00:12
My local service say they are for trans and cis women - this includes service users, employees and volunteers.

supportafterrapeleeds.org.uk/about/sarsvl-why-women-only/
They also say they don't include anyone who identifies as a man. So if a transman is raped then they can't work with then. But if you are a man and identify as a woman then come on board!

If you are non-binary and can identify with the approach that they only accept people who identify as women then they will work with you. Confused

This place is totally fucked up.

ShinyFootball · 10/07/2020 00:07

I think that a lot of charities and 3rd sector orgs get funding from a variety of sources and need to adhere to stuff to get the funding.

Some of this may come from there. Part of the stipulations to apply for funding may be demonstrating diversity etc and so they have little choice.

I don't actually know, but I used to work for a third sector org and bidding for funds is tough with much hoop jumping etc.

As with all other things. If you are, as we are constantly told, just trying to quietly live your life, and you are a woman with all the socialisation etc, then the last thing you would do as a transwoman is want to answer the phone to women who have been raped, surely?

stumbledin · 09/07/2020 23:55

Have just had a look at the web page for the National Rape Crisis Helpline and they say their service is for women and girls and is staffed by female Helpline workers - which means?? Is this code for saying biological women??

But additionally says it is LBTQ friendly .....

www.rasasc.org.uk/helpline/

WomaninBoots · 09/07/2020 23:43

If anything makes it clear a transwoman is a transwoman (even if they pass in all other ways) it is their voice. I'm pretty sure most TW know this. Why on earth would you want to work in a position that so clearly needs a female voice when you know you don't have one? Any TW who actually cared about the feelings of women needing to access these services would not look to do this job. Only people whose main concern is the well-being of their potential service users should be doing the job!

Surely the people running these services can figure that one out?

stumbledin · 09/07/2020 23:41

I've just checked the logo is from Rape Crisis England and Wales rapecrisis.org.uk/about-us/national-service-standards/ who also talk about providing services for women and girls.

stumbledin · 09/07/2020 23:38

There was also Devon Rape Crisis last year www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3675976-Devon-Rape-Crisis-advertising-for-self-identified-women

And some of us did contact the Brighton Group because they talked about the EA.

But I see that Cambridge RC doesn't.

However they say their service is for women and girls so surely the question to ask them is given the EA how do they ensure that women survivors who want support from a woman get it? They actually say:

"It is always your choice about who you talk to and when to talk to them. If you don’t feel that there is anyone in your life who you can talk to at the moment, are trying to decide whether or not to tell someone, or would like additional support, our helpline and email services are here to support you. All the women who answer the phones and emails are trained in supporting survivors of sexual violence."

So one would like to think they give women the choice to talk to another woman.

Also I see that they have the "Rape Crisis Professionally Approved" logo on their web site. So could maybe ask Rape Crisis themselves if they "approve" of this service. (Unless of course it is another Rape Crisis service that has approved them.)
