Can’t link to Twitter so I took a screenshot.
I’m kind of in shock.
Anyone else seen this?

I like the posts asking Margaret to give JK Rowling a call to clear things up. Atwood is my goddess ffs. I fear she's been bamboozled by her woke marketing interns. 2020 really sucks ass.

HeistSociety · 07/07/2020 04:13

I don't find her work depressing, but quite funny and poignant...

I do find her tweeting depressing though. Canada Lit sounds even more incestuous than Melbourne Lit.

Goosefoot · 07/07/2020 04:05

I think the people in her books are weirdly soulless and disturbing. I made a good effort to read a bunch and some were required in school as part of CanLit, but I gave up in the end because they made me feel depressed.

Ritascornershop · 07/07/2020 03:30

Meh. While I love some of her books she has always appeared in interviews as terribly pleased with herself, which I think can easily lead to a lack of critical thinking. For decades she has been Central Canada’s
literary darling and I imagine that world is quite the echo chamber. I’m not that surprised (Handmaid’s Tale notwithstanding).

Durgasarrow · 07/07/2020 02:39

What are they drinking up there in Canada?

HeistSociety · 07/07/2020 02:20

MA still doesn't come out of that well.

My creative writing Professor also was in a relationship with a same age student he was teaching, but at least he didn't slap students at parties!

Makes sense that MA would be wanting to re-establish her 'good feminist' credentials by mouthing the creed TWAW.

HeistSociety · 07/07/2020 02:16

Ta.

Goosefoot · 07/07/2020 02:01

@HeistSociety

Wow. Did not know that.

Was the accused man a personal friend? Not that that makes it any better.

I don't think that's entirely a fair assessment of what happened.

You can read about it here:

madwoman1ntheattic · 07/07/2020 01:54

MA lost all my respect when she personally invited the who’s who of CanLit to stand up for a man accused of sexual impropriety against a female student. She fucked over any hope of support for aspiring female writers and made it clear that male professors and supervisors should see their female students as fair game. They already did, because power, but MA rubber stamped it. Dont ever date to make a complaint ladies, you’ll never publish in this country again.
Yeah. Good writer. Not overly impressed by her decision making these days. Throwing women under the bus seems to be her forte of late.

JellyFishSquish · 07/07/2020 01:49

I could weep

HeistSociety · 07/07/2020 01:46

@Goosefoot

Yeah, reading through her tweet and subsequent comments, I think she's confused.

I know I said the same thing in another thread, but these articles in magazines like SA go a long way to convincing people that stuff like this is the scientific consensus.

While gender ideology may be on the back foot a little now in the UK, I think there is going to have to be refutations of these kind of articles to really affect the public consciousness. And it can't be things on websites that could be seen as biased, or even Youtube because that is not how a lot of people see public discourse. It needs to be newspapers or magazines or tv shows that are seen as strong unbiased journalism abd science information.

That would require strong journalism; the death spiral of journalism via click bait doesn't lend itself to hope on this, and other, issues.
HeistSociety · 07/07/2020 01:43

Bugger! Damn autocorrect.

HeistSociety · 07/07/2020 01:43

Bigger, forgot to star it out.

That's already happened - the berating.

THT was 'too cis, too white'.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 07/07/2020 01:39

How long until people start berating her for having no transwomen characters in Handmaid’s Tale?

I can imagine a few high profile trans activists fancying themselves in the green outfits of the wives...

It IS actually slightly more nuanced than there just being men and women.

Slightly. And absolutely nothing like a bell curve with most people somewhere in the middle.

HeistSociety · 07/07/2020 01:12

OMG.

Don't pull a Margaret, Mr Bob.

Differences of sexual development are not different sexes. It's not complicated at all....except, perhaps, with CAIS women, who I personally consider social women, as they've been socialised as females since birth.

mrbob · 07/07/2020 01:09

It IS actually slightly more nuanced than there just being men and women. Stepping aside from the trans debate which is different there is not ALWAYS XX or XY and the genetic make up doesn’t always match up totally with the expression of those genes in a physical way...

HeistSociety · 07/07/2020 01:00

Look, I love MA, and she's an incredibly versatile artist, but biology clearly isn't her strong suit.

Do you know what will not happen though? She will not be subjected to a flood of verbal abuse full of violent and sexual imagery from radical feminists.
