You can add your name to the growing list.

Bernadine is very pro TRA, though you'd still hope she'd be in favour of free speech.

If Salman Rushdie doesn't speak up it will be an outrage.

excitedemmi · 06/07/2020 11:41

Signed!

Lamahaha · 06/07/2020 11:38

Exactly.
The Booker winners of the past and present especially are really now called upon to show their colours. I have a few in mind -- I'd just like to know where they stand on this. It's not a thing you can really be neutral about. It's so bloody outrageous.

Bernadine, what say you?

'Cancelling' baroness Nicholson was such a silly, shortsighted thing to do.

Anyone now connected to the damn booker prize, on the shortlist, judges, promoters, etc, is now up for legitimate scrutiny.

Who will escape? Who is that 'pure', or rather, who has zero opinion about anything, ever?

It's going to be the 'watered-down prize for absolutely nothing'.

Signed!

Pleased to see Joolz Denby on there. I'm a fan anyway, but she's been absolutely fierce on this.

highame · 06/07/2020 11:06

Collidascope · 06/07/2020 11:00

Collidascope · 06/07/2020 10:59

Sally Wainwright and Susan Hill on there. That's made my day.

dragoncheeselady · 06/07/2020 10:45

an excellent letter - hopefully will convince them to do the right thing

Lamahaha · 06/07/2020 09:20

There are now almost 1000 signatories. It should make the Times. Fingers crossed.

If you are having trouble signing (maybe because you are not on wordpress you can ask Jane to add your name, either through Twitter (@blablafishcakes) or Facebook (Jane Harris, writer). She will do it manually for you.

I'm hoping the Times takes it up. Some big names on there. They have now added achievements (shortlisted books etc) to the top signatories.
Many have been on Booker shortlists. But there are many women who have won who are NOT there and their absence is striking.
I don't expect much from Margaret Atwood, as she is Canadian, but....
not naming names.

I was just coming on to say that! A pretty brief mention. No real coverage of the issues - taking the slant that DB had led the movement to oust the Baroness because of her vote against gay marriage, and that since then it has emerged that he had written some unsavory tweets. Very coy when it came to details. No mention of the Baroness supporting JKRowling, women's sex-based rights etc and the part that this may have played in subsequent events.

yetanotherusernameAgain · 06/07/2020 07:16

It's just been covered in the 7am news on the Radio 4 Today programme. Starts at 7.07am.
