How does #conversiontherapy affect the #LGBTQ community?

Should it be made illegal? What would that mean to you?

@HoCpetitions is investigating a petition calling for the practice to be made illegal.

I have responded saying conversion therapy for sexuality should be banned, but therapy for gender distressed/gd individuals should not be limited to affirmative therapy. Neutral, questioning therapy needs to be an option for these individuals.

Deleted!! Why? Nothing controversial in my post

ValancyRedfern · 03/07/2020 17:12

Same! Strange...

I get 'this tweet is unavailable' - have they had to vanish it?

Clutching at straws here but could it be that if the government state, 'transitioning children to prevent them being same sex attracted' is conversion therapy-they can then ban it?

No more transitioning of children-wouldn't that be wonderful-they can grow up to accept their sexuality & personality & just live their lives without being set on a medical pathway.

One of the questions is 'How should ‘conversion therapy’ be defined?'
We therefore have an opportunity to input into the definition!

There are only 3 questions overall - the others are:
How does conversion therapy affect the LGBTQ+ community?
and
Should the practice be made a specific criminal offence? What would it mean to you if was made a specific criminal offence?

Nice open questions....

Scary to think that therapists/doctors etc who don't 'affirm only' dysphoric kids, especially when they are aware of other co morbid mental health issues or trauma that may be causing it and worked through, could be prosecuted.

I actually think it can be OK (shouldn’t be criminalized) for therapists to talk to young people about how sexuality is sometimes fluid in teen years and could change, but whatever the outcome is, that’s totally fine. For gender Dysphoria the same applies, except it’s not possible To change sex, and very difficult to pass as the opposite sex. And that there is no hurry here.

None of that is IMO conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is behavioral therapy that attempts to Behaviorally condition someone to be attracted to a sex they aren’t attracted to. Questioning someone’s gender or sexuality is something quite different.
