I believe I am a feminist
But I seem to be a fan of Jordan Peterson. Are these states totally incompatible?

He's a misogynist

bingowingsmcgee · 02/07/2020 18:08

fwr can you recommend any biologists who make content on this stuff? Anyone who can communicate the stuff to the layperson?

bingowingsmcgee · 02/07/2020 18:05

I like him very much. I think he's genuine, and very brave. His books and lectures have been very helpful to me.

calllaaalllaaammma · 02/07/2020 18:03

Women only got the chance to go to University since the 1930's and it has taken a long time to be accepted as 'normal'. Men have been educated at Universities since 1167.
They didn't give us long to catch up & prove ourselves did they before it's there are men are 'naturally suited' to have the higher end jobs and it's low paid caring work that women are suited for.

I think he is useful for men to hear at least. However I do think he is very Gender essentialist. He seems to think that gendered tendencies in personality are 1) purely “nature”/uninfluenced by upbringing and 2) men’s work should be worth more because it is outside of the home, so that explains the wage gap full stop.

Basically he sounds like another rehash of the argument that the ideal Gendered society is Somehow frozen in time around 1960 - everything before that is backwards and everything after that is “feminism gone too far”. None of it makes any scientific sense. We know for a fact that socialization influences children’s gendered behavior, that these differences are slight and vary by individual. We know also that it is not possible to completely rule in or out “Hard wired” causes. He talks with complete confidence about issues that are extremely squishy.

As a biologist I’ve always found psychologistS who talk about gender to be intellectually shallow so it’s not that surprising though. He needs to take some human genetics courses taught by actual biologists not “behavioral geneticists” who don’t really understand t he data and models they use IME

An interesting and nuanced take on his work:

i read a story about a man/boy? wanted to be woman.

and he said very bad for being man,
smelly, angry, all of it, and last he didn't wanna do bad on woman...

and it was shocking.

i feel he is very young and for him being man is violent on woman and hated for that.

yes, guys need a role model.
guys need pride and wisdom as we woman need that too.

at this point in society there's no philosophy.

only orgasm and short emotions.

MaMaLa321 · 02/07/2020 16:48

I like him, but I also think he needs a better editor, as he can be very wordy.
When he first became popular, I watched/listened to him a lot. The Cathy Newman interview was especially enjoyable. But, as time went on, he kept on covering the same ground. Either because that's what he wanted to talk about, or because that is all people asked him about, I don't know. He looked steadily more ill and cranky as time went on and I'm not surprised that he seems to have had some kind of crisis, though I feel very sorry.

No of course not. I think he's really interesting. And I think he's a good role model for men.

WipeYourFeet There is a new one-- I watched a hours old new video by JP and his daughter yesterday?, describing what they have been through, but damned if I can find it now (spooky) sorry

@RedToothBrush

Since when do you have to agree with every opinion someone has?

I find this attitude very frustrating.

We SHOULD be critical and say 'I agree with that idea but think you are wrong about that one'. Its healthy and encourages debate.

The idea that we have to agree with everything someone says is absurd!

I don't feel the need to agree with everything a person says to like them but I was surprised to find myself.... "attracted" to someone and sympathetic to their views when they deny the existence of a "tyrannical patriarchy" given that I consider my sea feminist (a proper one, not lib fem) so I was curious about the stance of other feminists

You are joking? Bill C-16 some hidden artifact? Everyone knows about C-16. It’s mentioned roughly at the same rate as section 28 in the UK

What they dont know, someone started a thread about it the other day about Bill's, is that before each one is passed they have to do some kind of gender based assessment ( I'm.assuming its basically what we would call an equality impact assessment) showing the potential impact/conflicts the bill may have. This is meant to be available for public view and for every other bill its available. Fir c-16 a woman has been given the run around for years unable to view or obtain or indeed have anyone shed a light on if this assessment has even really been done.

what i can't understand is ... i think peterson is very famous about his opposition on bill c16 and free speech. (even in my country...east east asia)

madwoman1ntheattic · 02/07/2020 15:29

I’m fairly ambivalent about his overall thinking, but the Lindsay Shepherd debacle threw him into the spotlight. No one was in danger of sacking him (professor) for debating preferred pronouns/ mandated speech policies on television, but as a female teaching assistant, don’t dare show the clip as part of a class.
His role in the free speech debate is interesting, but I’m more concerned about the still constant no-platforming and cancelling of Lindsay Shepherd, despite mealy-mouthed apology she got from Wilfrid Laurier.

Needmoresleep · 02/07/2020 15:23

Surely the point of hearing listening to someone who you don't necessarily expect to agree with, is that it helps you refine your own views.

Why do you disagree? What do you really think. Why do some arguments appear persuasive, but instinctively you don't agree with the conclusion?

Being able to think independently is an important skill. You can't develop it by simply listening to people in your echo chamber.

picklemewalnuts · 02/07/2020 15:12

Poor guy! That sounds like a hell of a trauma for them, wrestling with his wife's diagnosis too.

Someone will be along soon to say he's the nonthinking persons's hero, or whatever that vacuous accusation is.

I like him.

WipeYourFeet · 02/07/2020 15:04

A curate's egg is actually a perfect description.
I went and looked him up on YouTube

The last video there is from his daughter. I feel quite sorry for him/them as family. Sounds like they're really been through the mill. I wouldn't wish that last year they've had on anyone.

Thelnebriati · 02/07/2020 14:47

Someone1987
Was that his '12 steps' book? So can your husband hear you when you ask him to pick up after himself or is it only radical when a man says it?

Franticbutterfly · 02/07/2020 14:43

I don't agree with everything he says but by and large I'm on the same page as him with most things. He tells it like it is, not how it should be, he's a realist and so am I.

WeeBisom · 02/07/2020 14:41

He's clearly very antagonistic to feminism (women are 'chaos', really?) I'm afraid he jumped off the deep end when he defended the Toronto incel killer: “He was angry at God because women were rejecting him...The cure for that is enforced monogamy. That’s actually why monogamy emerges.”

When Peterson began to get a little bit of pushback for directly saying the cure for incel murders was 'enforced monogamy' he immediately rebutted that he didn't really mean what he said (and linked a random Reddit comment as evidence that 'enforced monogamy' doesn't actually mean...er...enforcing monogamy. It just means a culture where monogamy is highly valued, apparently.)

I actually find Peterson quite interesting as a character, particularly in the wake of his struggles with drug addiction. In his latest video he seems a very fragile poor thing - he's crying, and obviously not doing very well mentally at all. I always had the impression that Peterson's bigging up of macho masculinity was a bit of a facade - he scoffs at us having 'too much empathy', but in fact I think he's actually a sensitive soul.
