Why r/GenderCritical was banned by Reddit

Hi! TRA here! Thought I'd take a quick breather from all the crowing, high-fiving, etc. to throw a lifeline to any actual open-minded critical thinkers wondering why Reddit banned r/gendercritical. Basically, you have 2 options when it comes to what to believe:

  1. It's a true conspiracy: silicon valley, hollywood & the media are in the thrall of the well-funded TransAgenda, the need for woke points, child-groomers, women-haters, MRAs, etc. etc.
  1. r/GenderCritical was hateful - if you want evidence then go to r/GenderCynical which existed to harvest said hatefulness. Read their strictly enforced rules about hate speech, misogyny, anti-feminism, pile-ons, doxxing, etc. (NB: abbreviating "trans exclusionary radical feminist" is not considered hate speech on this subreddit) and then sort their posts by "top" and "all time" and judge for yourself.

The trans men, trans women and non-binary people of Reddit do not hate women and do not tolerate abuse. Have a better day. x

Reddit is lying.... or at least being disingenuous. The Donald moved to it's own website months ago prior to being quarantined and is thriving, and many of the sites banned on Monday have already moved over too. This move by reddit and also similar moves by Facebook are not to combat "hate speech" but to try and dampen enthusiasm for Trump. Most of silicon valley do not want him reelected in November. A lot of sites such as Gendercritical were banned to make it seem like they weren't targeting Republicans, two birds one stone.

@MadBadDaddy Another reason why your Royal Mail analogy breaks down is that Royal Mail are not refusing to post letters that are ‘gender critical’ while happily posting Nazi letters.
Also, there’s no way Royal Mail can know what is inside the letters as it’s illegal for them to open them. Whereas Reddit can easily see what is being posted on these vile subs.

justanotherneighinparadise · 01/07/2020 14:02

To be able to criticise practises that exploit and harm women you’d need to be able to have a sense of how it feels to be one. It’s a lived experience, not a feeling.

PacificState · 01/07/2020 13:55

@madbaddaddy I agree with you that too many posts on here come down to 'because trans' and I think that's transphobic.

I note your refusal to condemn the rape subs.

You cannot logically posit that GC was closed solely because it was hateful. The survival of rape subs when GC is closed clearly shows that this is not only about hateful content. If that was the metric, the rape subs would be banned.

In the absence of a proper explanation from Reddit, deep and violent misogyny is simply the most likely explanation for why one was banned while the other remains. Not hate.

Smegmaballet · 01/07/2020 13:52

I post here because I think it's nice to see a place for women to talk about things that matter to them. Weird that causes you pain.

DeRigueurMortis · 01/07/2020 13:43

I posted what I did because I was being painfully reminded of it whenever I lurked around these and other boards, and the punchline was always "because trans-people". To me, it's like watching self-harm.

I post on here OP because whenever I lurk on Twitter and most other social media I read the most appalling abuse and death threats directed towards women for politely and articulately pointing out the unarguable erosion of woman's right by Trans ideology.

Trans people are not the problem.

Trans ideology with its cancel culture is harmful to both women and transsexuals.

MadBadDaddy · 01/07/2020 13:31

Thank you, Rufus

You are free to take my statements at face value, or not.

Reddit's editorial policies are actively and constantly criticised, and your sentiments are echoed by many of the users themselves.

I didn't crash your party to be an ambassador or apologist for Reddit. Far from it, and I'm not here trying to win hearts and minds either.

There's an old pop-psychology book called 'Games People Play' and one of the 'games' is called "Ain't it Awful" which is like a self-soothing communal catastrophising. I posted what I did because I was being painfully reminded of it whenever I lurked around these and other boards, and the punchline was always "because trans-people". To me, it's like watching self-harm.

DeRigueurMortis · 01/07/2020 13:29

Just for anyone lurking I'd also like to add that whilst the main gender critical sub Reddit was axed, the sub Reddit GenderCriticalGuys (for GC men to express their opinions) is still active.

I've put that in bold deliberately and leave people to draw their own conclusions about why that might be the case....

justanotherneighinparadise · 01/07/2020 13:16

Yep I’m delighted this thread has been allow to stand. This stuff needs sunlight. Lots and lots of sunlight.

DeRigueurMortis · 01/07/2020 13:14

This doesn't make sense. The OP admits to trolling the board. Why is he getting a free pass?

I don't think the OP is getting a free pass.

In fact I think it's great that threads like this stand so lurkers can see the "glee" TRA's experience in response to shutting down debate and especially women's voices.

Equally, important in this context is the lack of concern they have for the misogynistic content that is allowed to stand on Reddit re: such as subs on rape fetish and fantasy.

It's similar to the demands Fox and Owl made to their Agency Blair Publishing prior to resigning for representing JKR whilst having had zero concerns for them representing Tyson Fury.

It's a very clear demonstration of both ethical hypocrisy and unwillingness to engage in evidenced based debate.

The more sunlight the better and even more so when it's provided by the TRA's themselves (especially one whose admitted on here to trying to get an American Battered Women's Justice Project shut down).

Coffeecak3 · 01/07/2020 13:03

The disgusting comments against trans people are usually posted by men who would use any forum to bash members of the lgbt community.
Of course women who ask relevant questions in a thoughtful manner are called transphobic and lumped in with the men that are. Treated as equals only so we can be threatened with abuse.

PuppyLove2000 · 01/07/2020 12:55

"And Nazis post letters - should we boycott the Post Office?"

Are you willingly trying to sound dim?

"Another post asking what showers non-binary people should use was responded to with "the ones with zyklon-b" - is obviously hateful but as a POC I've heard it all. What is also hateful is the stream of rape and death threats JK Rowling received from TRA's and I don't see anyone shutting their forums down. If you can't see this is a double standard then we can't help you here.

QuentinWinters · 01/07/2020 12:53

It's such hypocrisy

And Nazis post letters - should we boycott the Post Office?....If you want to see the truly hateful stuff then you have to actively look for it.
Eh? You had to look for GC reddit too. I'm confused Confused surely that argument applies to all subs?

I too don't understand how subs that promote misogyny stay but the GC one went

E.g. www.reddit.com/domain/trp.red/

@madbaddaddy FWIW I never used GC Reddit (never use Reddit full stop tbh) and the examples you quote of transphobia on there are horrendous.

But come on. For your Royal Mail analogy to work, Reddit would have to be an 'innocent facilitator' with no editorial involvement. That's very clearly not the case. Reddit staff/mods are in the same position as MNHQ - they don't write the posts but they do have responsibility for moderation policy and Reddit has shown in recent days that it exerts editorial power where it thinks it justified.

Given that, leaving up the rape subs while banning GC is morally grotesque. If you can't admit that then we're entitled to wonder about your good faith (or expansive tolerance for violent misogyny) I think.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 01/07/2020 12:36

Some people are just vile

And spoil things for everyone

MadBadDaddy · 01/07/2020 12:29

PuppyLove2000

But Reddit has lots of pro rape, MRA stuff on there that is still there

And Nazis post letters - should we boycott the Post Office?

If you want to see the truly hateful stuff then you have to actively look for it. Personally, I don't. Unfortunately, the Trans-related corners get actively targeted and I don't just mean hateful DMs.

One GC post commented on the concept of a brain-scan to identify 'transness' and said that if it could be done in the womb then "we could abort the fuckers".

Another post asking what showers non-binary people should use was responded to with "the ones with zyklon-b"

This isn't about "shutting women up"

I did have a look at a reddit thread someone recommended

But on page 1 it said how great it was that the hate forum had been closed down and they stood With all their sisters...not just their cisters

So I thought....nah

MichaelMumsnet has been around for quite a while now

FrameyMcFrame · 01/07/2020 11:10

I actually read it as MichelleMumsnet....

I've been on MN for many years, my kids are at uni now.

But I don't remember there ever being male mods. Apologies if I'm terribly out of touch

dragoncheeselady · 01/07/2020 10:39

@TheProdigalKittensReturn

I just find it interesting that blatant goading is "civil" as long as it's not women who have concerns about gender ideology doing it.
its always women that have to be careful about such things - Can't think why
