I cannot be the only one to think the new opt-out organ donation scheme will result in a lot of wombs being stolen without permission, if this comes to pass?

@DanniArthur

Ah just realised this thread is in the "feminist" section and it's the thought of it going to a trans woman that's the issue? I consider myself a feminist in the sense I want equality so cant understand the issues with trans people.
Sigh. For the avoidance of doubt, I am on the organ donation register and have been ever since I was 18 (more than 40 years now). My next of kin know my wishes and I hope they would be respected. I've always told them once I'm dead I don't need any of my body parts any more, so I would be happy for any of my organs to be used to help another human being who is ill to get extra years of life and better quality of life.

It does give me pause to think that one of my organs might go to somebody who isn't a good person, e.g. a murderer, but that's extremely unlikely. It gives me no qualms at all to think it might go to a person who is of a different race or sexuality to me, or to a transwoman or transman. I don't hate people who are different from me.

Now that there is talk of parts of the reproductive system being transplanted/implanted, though, I want the right to opt out of that. This is a far more complex issue than, say, kidney transplants.

I feel for people who want to have a child of their own but can't. However, I don't see it as a human right to have a child by any means possible. In an overpopulated world we don't need to be focussing on finding ways to increase the number of babies being born.

In the current state of scientific knowledge, it's a very high risk even for a female. A male attempting to gestate a foetus after extensive surgery to implant a womb and other body parts from a dead woman would almost certainly fail. The welfare of the baby doesn't appear to be at the forefront of researchers' minds here. To be brutally frank, I would have grave concerns about any male who wanted to do this being suitable to become a parent. The enormous expense of even attempting this would not be money well spent, in my view, when there are so many other health issues desperately needing research, many of them to do with women's health and obstetrics.

So my long-suffering next of kin will be getting an addendum to my instructions. You can give permission for any body parts to be used for transplant except the reproductive system.

I opted out because of presumed consent.

No. It would be going to a man. So that's the issue. HTH.

That's one issue certainly, although for the forseeable future not a big concern. My main concern is a sibling for my children being born from my eggs and or womb and neither me or my children knowing. Among other things.

For me, no.

It's the concept of "deemed consent" I object to; as a feminist I have some pretty firm views about consent, and assuming that it's present without actually checking is a big no-no.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

I saw that crap on Twitter. Pathetic isn't it. They all are.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 30/06/2020 17:52

Unfortunately, there are plenty of brainwashed young, woke handmaidens willing to share, @TheWordWomanIsTaken.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 30/06/2020 17:32

@BiggerBoat1

Who cares? You'll be dead.
I care I opted out because womb wasn't one of the organs listed. And I'm not taking a chance. I originally wanted to just opt out of tissue donation but then thought about it further and simply opted out completely. I am aware though that there are very few scenarios in which organs can be harvested. But it would be interesting to know where those who espouse transwomen having babies think the wombs are going to come from. Certainly not from me.

Gasp those Twitter yearnings for a uterus are actually disturbing Confused

JonHammIsMyJamm · 30/06/2020 14:11

Yes. Globally poor women are already at the mercy of wealthy baby hunters willing to exploit their bodies at any cost, this will just make things worse.

Wolfgirrl · 30/06/2020 14:08

Even if it is legislated against in the UK, it could be a serious worry for developing countries like Thailand Sad

For me it's eggs. I would not want any embryos created after my death for any purpose eg experimental.

I don't think they would do this as it's an ethical minefield.

I think it would be better if they really specify what's in and what's out with a guarantee that those bits will never be used even if things change in the future.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/06/2020 13:37

I doubt it. From my vague memories of what happens with womb transplants in women, it's implanted purely for the purposes of the pregnancy and removed afterwards, because in the long term the body would probably not tolerate it.

Alabamawhirly1 · 30/06/2020 13:20

Would it menstrate?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/06/2020 13:01

Four very young people here, all with she/her in their twitter bio.

I feel uneasy about the opt-out system anyway. We should not presume consent from anyone. It's a little simpler if someone dies suddenly, but when you've got someone on their deathbed or in intensive care I do think it can cause vulnerabilities to misuse.

Do wombs have a sell by date?
I ask because as an menopausal woman my womb does fuck all apart from being a cancer risk.My ovaries aren't doing anything useful and my hormones are maintained chemically.
Could my womb be transplanted on its own?It is full of fibroids and polyps but I am happy to give it to any transwomen to give them and enriched experience of womanhood.

No I don't think age is an issue (unlike ovaries) but the fibroids and polyps might be.

Also they'd apparently need your cervix, some important blood vessels and as much of your vagina as possible, so I'd pass on it.

Wolfgirrl · 29/06/2020 23:19

I'm not sure. Post menopausal women can conceive using donor eggs so I would assume not.

Unfortunately I cannot have a hysterectomy useless I become a transman as body dysphoria (ie I hate my womb)is not valid for a woman born a woman.

Wolfgirrl · 29/06/2020 22:39

I'm not worried about men choosing trans women as sexual partners to the point where we are defunct. I am worried about the patriarchy growing stronger to the point where we are seen as chattel and sexual objects. This is far from impossible and is the case in many countries.

OP posts:
Alabamawhirly1 · 29/06/2020 22:37

Therefore we are afforded protections based on that fact. If that fact was removed, and men were able to conceive and carry children without women, where would that leave us in a patriarchal world? The only need left for us would be a sexual one.

The vast majority of straight men (or all true straight men) will pick a woman over a transwomen for a partner, whether thats for sex or procreation. They are not going to suddenly shack up with transwomen because they can have children, and they certainly arnt going to go through pregnancy and childbirth themselves.

So don't worry, our place as baby makers will be safe.

Alabamawhirly1 · 29/06/2020 22:16

I opted out for this exact reason.

I don't want my body parts being used as some affirmation play thing, and I don't want to play any part in frankenstein experiments on fetuses.

I cant actually see a pregnancy working in a man. If it's so simple why haven't they done it on an animal yet. But what I can see is lots of eggs being fertilised (which is creating life in my eyes) to then be subjected to a dangerous and ultimately fatel environment.

PurpleHoodie · 29/06/2020 22:14

This action will stop some people receiving other peoples living organs. They will continue to die.

But as the MRAs/TRAs/POLITICOs who brought this about say "Welcome to your erasure".
