Hi all, hoping you wise ones can help me. Do any of you know where I can buy shorts for my 12 year old daughter that are mid-thigh length? I've been looking for ones but every year it gets harder and harder to find suitable ones. It seems to me that as she gets older, the clothes in her size get skimpier.

I bought some for her recently, but when she tried them on, they barely covered her bum.
I've looked in the boys section of shops, but while the length is fine, she would like ones that are more "girly" in pattern and colours.
Thanks in advance for any advice and recommendations you may have.

Thanks for the reminder! Shorts ordered as per dd age 12's request for mid thigh length ones. Ordered from ASOS and h and m mix of kids and women's sizes to try.

I was looking for just this the other day - Uniqlo provided!

Appreciate all the recommendations - thank you

Mountain Warehouse kids sizing often comes up small IME.

SwimmingCait · 30/06/2020 17:49

Having had another look at mountain warehouse, they are listed under kids rather than girls but do go up to age 13. They always have navy but the other colours seem to change every year. Last year was pink and turquoise. This year yellow and purple

I’ll second (fourth?) Land’s End and Gap, and add another American brand, Carter’s/OshKosh: cartersoshkosh.co.uk

My daughters really like their soft fabrics and colorful styles. Nb, their sizes fit smaller than Land’s End in our experience.

RobinDish · 30/06/2020 17:19

My dd has chino style from Gap and flowery paper bag ones from H&M. I've never been unable to find them.

ElfDragon · 30/06/2020 17:14

I have the same problem.

I got some from Lands End last year for my dd.

When she was younger I got some amazing ones from Costco - I think the label is Tractor. I managed to find a bigger pair on eBay when she finally outgrew the ones she had (she was always tiny and slow growing - alas no more!). They had amazing stretch, and she loved them - said they were very comfy. The Lands end ones are ok, but she doesn’t love them the same.

She is just beginning to be annoyed by lack of pockets - I think I will need to brush up in my sewing skills!

Zara do nice paperbag shorts which are a slightly longer style.

SwimmingCait · 30/06/2020 16:06

I was going to say Mountain Warehouse who have done really nice girls cotton shorts with good pockets for the last 3 or 4 years but I see they don't have any girls shorts at all on their website this year Sad

CorianderLord · 30/06/2020 12:06

As soon as she's in adults sizes she can get mid thigh ones from ASOS. They have loads they're v trendy.

Just search mid-thigh shorts, mom shorts or cycling shorts

DD1 (12) refuses to wear skimpy shorts, we got nice Bermuda length shorts for her from Boden and Gap.

Siameasy · 30/06/2020 11:57

Following as I’m sick of bits of my and my DD’s genital area falling out the side of shorts. I’m in the market for some mid thigh cycling shorts in cotton Lycra for both of us so we can sit however we like without fear of exposure

ThroughThoroughThoughTough · 30/06/2020 08:59

Everyone saying just get boys ones is missing the point - the OP’s dd (and mine) don’t want ones that look boyish.

My dd wants non sludge colours and something that fits her properly (she’s no longer straight up and down). Plus she’s sensitive to fabric and will only wear soft fabric with a lot of stretch (she likes to test clothes by doing the splits - not possible in chino type shorts).

ShinyFootball · 30/06/2020 00:38

We just get boys ones.

Decent length.
Sturdier made.
Pockets.

Job done.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 29/06/2020 23:30

Funnily enough I’m sewing a pair of purple linen shorts for my nearly 12 yr old just now but Landsend & walking shorts from mountain warehouse or similar have solved this problem for us too (but my clothes have the best pockets Wink)

TehBewilderness · 29/06/2020 23:22

Look for Hilo Hattie Hawaiian shorts. I think you will both like them.

LouHotel · 29/06/2020 23:16

Women pj shorts give me the rage, you end up just fully exposing yourself.

When it comes to pockets my mum now alters my girls clothes to include as my 4 year really loves having dresses with pockets.

LiterallyProblematic · 29/06/2020 22:55

My 14 yo has jogging bottom shorts m, mid thigh from Urban Outfitters and Topshop. Bit £ but at least they’re not skimpy.

happydappy2 · 29/06/2020 22:10

It’s disappointing isn’t it that girls shorts skim the top of the thigh & boys shorts hang loosely round the knee.I have always worn cut off old jeans, my daughter wears her brothers hand me downs

LizA49 · 29/06/2020 21:43

I get my girls (12 and 14) shorts from primark boys department. Better length, no lace or glitter, and POCKETS.

Dicotyledon · 29/06/2020 21:43

Asda, for all their faults, do some, I believe.

Wotsitsarecheesy · 29/06/2020 21:40

My DD chose several pairs from sainsburys. All a decent length. DD is 13 but got them from the women's section.

StarStarTeachMe · 29/06/2020 21:38

A lot of the Scandi type brands are great for this. I'm a big believer in children dressing like children and girls' clothes being fit for purpose! Look up Maxomorra, Meyadey, Alba

ThroughThoroughThoughTough · 29/06/2020 10:36

My dd ended up with Lands End skorts. She hates tight and / or short shorts and won’t wear ones that look too boyish for fear of being teased.
