The effect of lockdown on transitioning teen girls

I mentioned this on another thread, but as a worker in a high school we have found out during weekly phone calls home that since lockdown that most of our FtM students have de transitioned, perhaps as there is no longer the group peer pressure or affirmation from teachers? I was interested to see if there are any more examples - the other thread was started about Dr Haddock, and I felt this was worthy of its own thread.

In our school there were nine girls out of a approx 160 student year 9 cohort who identified as boys. Seven have now de transitioned since lockdown and one is considering it. Out of those nine I would have said three of them weren’t as committed as the others and had said they were “thinking about being non binary”, but were keen to remain part of that friendship group. It really is infectious.

Our experience was that our daughter announced to her Year Head that she was now a boy and that was it. He immediately communicated this across the school and so formally transitioned her. He called our 17 year old son into a meeting and told him but did not tell us because she didn’t want us to know (no safeguarding concerns). The previous year she had announced she was nb and changing her name. The same Year Head had immediately ordered the systems changes to do this despite our objections. She was 13.

We had a battle to get the school to reverse all of this. Having spoken to lots of parents and teachers, our situation is not uniques, but there are still schools which will not transition behind the parents’ backs. I would be interested in knowing how many of the ones who do transition behind parents’ backs have someone “cheerleading” this within the school vs schools that don’t.

out of interest, is anyone aware of the process that the child goes through in school if they raise the subject of possibly being confused about their 'gender identity'. A teacher friend who is involved in the social transitioning of a ftm child without involvement (possibly knowledge) of the parents wasn't overly clear on what threshold (of distress?) on the part of the child was acceptable to start a serious conversation about actually kicking off the process.

My suggestion that a child (I was thinking mtf) could just decide that they were trans and go straight and use the opposite sex toilets to bug the girls was reject as being silly but then there was no further definition of what would 'count'. I also wondered about how transitioning a child at school without the involvement of parents fits in with normal flag raising for abuse etc - ie. if a school has concerns about the welfare of a child at home there is a very clear pathway that leads to social services being brought in. Presumably if a child tells the school that they don't feel comfortable/safe enough at home to discuss such a life changing decision (and lets face it, the family will be picking up the pieces), does the guidance tell the school to include social services or are normal safeguarding procedures completely ignored? Are there any teachers or parents with experience of this?

That video is indeed shocking and terrifying! Where is the peer critical analysis that is supposed to take place? How are these bollocks papers getting through?!

Christ that video is terrifying
Yep, sobering viewing but I’m glad someone is shining a light on this issue.

Deliriumoftheendless · 04/07/2020 16:04

Thank you for that, will watch later.

TheRealMcKenna · 04/07/2020 11:33

Deliriumoftheendless this video pretty much tells you all you need to know...

James Lindsay was on Joe Rogan this week. Interesting that Rogan said that he considered the Fallon Fox ‘Controversy’ the hill he was prepared to die on.

Deliriumoftheendless · 04/07/2020 11:30

Oh phew! Thank goodness.

TheRealMckenna- will check the grievance studies hoax out, thanks.

@Fishdoggy

This is such an interesting thread, thank you. I was sent this by DM on Twitter. I have the author's permission to share and use it as I see fit but to keep her identity secret. So this seems a fitting place for her words to be heard.
The answer is almost no one, sadly.

I spent yesterday looking at ‘tool kits’ for ‘transgender children’ in foster care - not one of them mentioned trauma. It was all affirmation only, gender identity is innate etc etc.

I am planning to go and see my MP about it all, once I have my documentation-ducks in a row.

Dolly has been suggested as a replacement for a
a confederate statue in her native Tennessee, so the current laws of the universe dictate that cancel culture must come for Dolly P next.

I shall be wearing my Dolly Metal tee today as a protective talisman, to hopefully ward off his predictions!

I’m sorry this is off topic, but in that thread there’s talk about Dolly Parton being “cancelled”. Does anyone know why?

I saw that tweet. I don’t think it’s serious. Unfortunately, like Titania McGrath, he has a knack of predicting where things are going. Have you heard of the ‘grievance studies’ hoax?

You can’t cancel Dolly. 😡

Also, I wonder if this applies to girls socialising in strong peer groups only? The less gregarious, shyer girl might find refuge online and become MORE likely to transition as a result?

I’m not convinced shyness is a factor (In my experience they almost all are somewhat socially awkward) but as someone with a child in the family who seems to have desisted over lockdown (year 9) I have been talking to someone whose child has ‘come out’ (year 8) on another thread and we think we have found a pattern that makes sense of both.

Aesopfable · 04/07/2020 08:42

It is 100% true, however I would say it is more like 6 than 9, as mentioned as three of the girls weren’t really serious but wanted to fit in with their peers.

The concern is how far would those girls go in order to fit in? And given the no question affirmation approach, how easy is it to step back? Affirmation is not neutral acceptance - it is actively pushing them forward. And when everyone is ‘celebrating’ your new found ‘gender’ as a young impressionable teen girl you might find yourself ‘locked in’ to this.

SocialConnection · 04/07/2020 07:42

Intriguing! I wonder if there are any formal studies on this?

I see some people on Twitter are questioning if it is true and also wondering what school.

Like I could disclose which school - I value my job! I suspect these numbers aren’t anything unusual and I would expect other schools are seeing a similar phenomenon so the school I work at will hardly stand out and be identifiable.

Anecdotal accounts from parents also appear to back this up - I would be so interested in A proper research project on lockdown/teenagers with gender identity issues..

Ive just watched the one where blaire white interviews a F-m- F detransitioner called elle. Elle spent three years on testosterone. Was a depressed teen whose parents wanted a Quick fix. She has since detransitioned. The comments underneath are saying she wasnt actually trans because trans people dont detranition. she was a transtrender. Blaire was criticised too.

The trans community will not allow discussions from even inside their own communities.

“People don’t treat transitioning as a permanent life choice” stuck out for me

Yorkshiremummyof1 · 03/07/2020 11:57

This is a video from an American YouTuber which I found quite interesting, she is a trans woman but talks about how children and young people don’t have the same concept of permanence as adults do, talking about trans being a trend etc. Some of her videos about YouTube drama are problematic but I found this one interesting

SerenityNowwwww · 03/07/2020 10:17

I saw a photo on twitter of poor women’s breasts which had been ‘ironed’ - my god the pain those girls mush have suffered. I can’t even imagine when they breastfeed. But this hasn’t been a ‘choice’ for them.

As I pointed out the DS - how many children in developing countries or in countries at war have time for this crap?

NearlyGranny · 03/07/2020 09:41

Serenity, those breasts attract such unwelcome and distressing attention from boys and men. As a teenage girl, I was embarrassed by then; they suddenly popped up and changed my life, triggering all kinds of unpleasant intrusions into my childhood.

Back in the day, we just had to get on with it. Shorts worn under our compulsory uniform skirts so the boys who flipped them from behind us in the corridor with their rulers didn't see our underwear, wriggling out of reach without attracting the teacher's attention in physics lessons when the boys behind competed to ping our bra straps or even unbuckle us, walking with our heads down to the bus stop so as not to catch a grown man's eye and be catcalled...

This was the daily gauntlet we ran and accepted as 'normal'. If someone had said I could end all this by transitioning, I'd have been tempted!

For those girls, lockdown shut down all the furore and gave them breathing space, and what a boon it has proved. I'm not a bit surprised but I am encouraged.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 03/07/2020 09:40

The only defence I can come up with for Susie Green is that having convinced herself that this extreme, borderline illegal pathway was the correct one for her child (for whatever motives, some of which might indeed be homophobic, her own words definitely do give that impression) that for the sake of her own mental health she cannot allow even a single moments worth of doubt to creep in, because the guilt of unnecessary medical intervention would be too much to bear.

However, taking this absolute refusal to question one’s own narrative and instead applying it to other people’s children, lobbying the government to apply it to other people’s children (even without parental consent) and making your living from applying that narrative (whilst railing against any actual scientific/medical research that might cast even the teensiest bit of doubt on your narrative) is the bit that I find unforgivable.

One of the big arguments for paediatric transition is that it makes for better ‘passing’ as the opposite sex (allowing them to leave their trans past behind and just live quietly in their chosen gender role). Yet this supposed benefit has largely been denied to Green‘s child, who has instead been paraded in the tabloid press and on tv to shore up Green’s narrative.

So, I ask myself, who exactly is Green doing this FOR? Because the only answer I can find so far is Green herself.
