I don't know. This an issue that really hits me hard, having been on the receiving end of male violence and sexual abuse and also having a sibling who has transitioned. They are now burning all of Rowling's books. I know if I state my actual feelings about the issue, I will never see or hear from the person again, and family gatherings will no longer be possible. It's like being held hostage by someone else's feelings.

And every time I see TRAs pile on to a celebrity, it hurts. Seeing King back down just reinforces it.

SerenityNowwwww · 29/06/2020 08:52

I always thought he was crap. Even as a child I thought his stories were a bit ‘teenage boy’ and daft.

teawamutu · 29/06/2020 08:49

Nope. He knew once upon a time. What a disappointment.

So ignore them. They tire themselves out. He doesn’t have to worry about book and film deals.

SunsetBeetch · 29/06/2020 08:48

Maybe he just can't be bothered to argue with them?

SerenityNowwwww · 29/06/2020 08:46

I can’t believe that he lumbered unknowingly into the debate then peed his pants when the anime army squealed.

Heygirlheyboy · 29/06/2020 08:42

I think when she thanked him so directly he freaked out. Leaving the rt stand alone would have been enough. He may decide to stand up yet tho.

SunsetBeetch · 29/06/2020 08:38

@PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg

That sort of WOULD make sense - he disagrees with JKR but supports her right to express an opinion.

I don't think for a minute he believes TWAW, mind you.

I agree. Plus he's supportive of women who have experienced domestic violence.
hellandhairnets · 29/06/2020 08:37

He has made the whole thing infinitely worse. The baying mob are all positively gleeful about it. It's a real "stick the boot in' bullying now, ha ha "she trusted and thanked him then he turned on her, hurrah" stuff.

Ugly. Very very ugly sentiments indeed. Makes me sick to my stomach.

nauticant · 29/06/2020 08:31

It's disappointing to see SK show obeisance but I'm less upset by this than other people here. As I read his TWAW tweet, SK gave the absolutely minimum to throw off the baying mob. He knows this and they know it.

I can't help feel that this happening in such a public way lessens the meaning of TWAW. It's become slightly more "the incantation you must chant to keep the evil at bay".

HumphreyCobblers · 29/06/2020 08:14
Sad
Kit19 · 29/06/2020 08:05

twat! he knew exactly the effect the effect RT her and then later saying TWAW would have

he'd have been better off saying nothing

GinUnicorn · 29/06/2020 08:02

So disappointed in SK.

OldeMagick · 29/06/2020 06:30

Fantastic guy

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and mine is that Stephen King has just been significantly less than gentlemanly.

He MUST know what effect those two tweets would have had. He MUST understand what is happening to JK right now. Interestingly he follows but 188 people and she is amongst them so they must have some kind of connection, sone correspondence - he did a very ungentlemanly thing and I really hope someone in rea5life is pointing that out to him.

What a lot of cowards there are about at the moment

I am just going to point out, again, that actor James Dreyfus has always been a supporter.

2BthatUnnoticed · 29/06/2020 05:56

Okay sorry I couldn’t see the tweet SK was responding to. Disappointing but not surprising.

JK: thank you for speaking up for poor women against the middle class and elite. It is much appreciated in the real world, regardless of what Twitter thinks.

FatPantsON · 29/06/2020 04:38

I don't have any problem with him saying TWAW, though I doubt he believes it. People say it to be polite. An it's fine to believe it as long as you're happy to speak up and say people like jk have a right to their opinion.

But responding to a tweet calling her a terf and ignoring that fact is shocking.

I am

ItsLateHumpty · 29/06/2020 04:08

His retweet of JKR is still there, he hasn’t deleted it or recanted it, that I can see?

I don’t think his retweet was anything to do with the TWAW / TWANW discussion but was agreeing that women shouldn’t be abused, attacked, or shamed for talking.

To then turn round and respond to the abusive dog whistle “TERF“ (“You should address the TERF tweet”) with “Yes. Trans women are women.” is actually just more abuse of JKR. He is craven, and hypocritical.

He’s a wordsmith and knows well what the results of his craft are.

Another ‘hero’ sullied.

I very much liked the response from Fionne Orlander

Why are we even doing this

TehBewilderness · 29/06/2020 03:03

He only lasted two hours before he posted TWAW and showed the twitterverse who he is.

lionheart · 29/06/2020 03:01

He did.

NotBadConsidering · 29/06/2020 03:01

He also did it as a reply to a tweet that said this:

You should address the TERF tweet. By telling us constant readers if you believe trans women are women.

He felt the need to justify his position because some nobody on Twitter didn’t like his support for Rowling. Craven.

DeRigueurMortis · 29/06/2020 02:32

I seem to be missing something - why are people so annoyed at SK?

He "seagulled" her: soared in from on high squawking in support, waited for her to offer him thanks and then flew away and shat on her.

Yes he said TWAW, but that is accepted now as a largely meaningless white lie. He has likely had many private messages threatening suicide and thinks “TWAW“ is a kindness to those people. Not saying I agree (I don’t), but his retweet of JKR carries much more weight imo.

NotBadConsidering · 29/06/2020 02:16

Well he is the master of fantastical fiction I suppose.
