But this wasn't just an ill thought out spur of the moment tweet.

This was an article in a magazine.

He wrote:

"Recently, of course, we saw people like JK Rowling using her own sexual assault as justification for discriminating against a group of people who were not responsible for it."

He has asked for that quote to be removed, but the article was posted several days ago. Apparently now that people are asking for his removal from the front bench, he sees his error.

I can't work out if men like Owen Jones are just so deeply misogynist that the thought of something affecting women (as this issue does) just does not reach their radar, or if they know it affects women but they just don't care.

I wonder if he will work it out by the end of the day and delete his tweets?

Or would that be a step too far because he would have to concede that JKR was defending women's sex based rights?

That thread is really strange. (Not sure about easiest way to cut and paste from twitter but OJ is quote tweeting the bottom tweet).

"One of the many problems with anti-trans activists is they relentlessly make up lies about their opponents.

People's sexual partners are (obviously!) their own decisions and nobody else's; I've never claimed otherwise. Look how wild this is.

Remember when Little Owen Jones told lesbians it was transphobic not to do dick but then called them homophobic and offensive for asking him if he'd perform cunnilingus? I wonder what he thinks now that his TRA chums state that gay men who won't fuck vaginas are transphobes?"

Meanwhile:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-53181342

"For York, this means not simply celebrating how far the movement has come, but instead examining how far it has to go. Black trans people in particular are navigating the ever-present threat of assault or harassment by simply "taking a cab, or going to a restaurant... particularly if they are not cis passing."
And this discrimination also extends to transphobic preferences in the dating world: from cisgender gay men not wanting to date trans men, to the routine fetishisation of trans women."

Bradfemly Walsh might be using rather graphic language, but essentially this BBC report is indeed saying that cisgender men who will not date trans men have transphobic dating preferences.

Confused

If Labour keep him then they are effectively saying ‘if we were in government this is what it would look like, this is the level of respect we would show abused women’.

Absolutely and Labour have shown over and over again that they don't think women's rights should be protected or that girls should have dignity, privacy and safety in schools or elsewhere.

I am listening, as long as people like this are in the Labour party, particularly in positions of power, I will NEVER vote Labour. NEVER.

The Tories are awful, and their response to coronavirus has been dreadful. However, I'm betting that it's been slightly better than a party that says that biological sex doesn't exist and science and facts don't matter. If they were in power, if they stuck to their ideology they'd probably try to identify coronavirus out of existence (bit like Trump, but more woke). Then run around wailing about the phobia of the virus killing more men than women (and ignoring their gender identity, transphobic coronavirus).

noblegiraffe · 28/06/2020 12:05

His problem was that the person doing the violence was a man, and therefore, in his opinion, entirely disconnected from the issue of opening up women’s spaces to trans women.

He lacks the imagination to understand that if you don’t agree that trans women are women, then it becomes entirely relevant. It’s not even about suggesting that trans women are predators (although there are examples of this), it is about not feeling safe around the male sex, however they present or identify, especially as there are no checks to ensure that someone who identifies as a women is doing so with no ill-intent towards women (and again, there are examples of this being an issue).

He is not only a misogynist, but he is also not very bright.

Highperbolay · 28/06/2020 11:54

LOJ tweeting about how he can use his experiences in the trans debate if those who are not trans (ie JKR) are doing so, failing to grasp that women are directly affected by it and have skin in the game.

Somehow always forgetting women’s rights, it’s really quite careless

I can't work out if men like Owen Jones are just so deeply misogynist that the thought of something affecting women (as this issue does) just does not reach their radar, or if they know it affects women but they just don't care.

How fucking dare he disregard women's concerns in this way and make it about himself. Its awful what happened to him, but that assault was by homophobic MEN. It has absolutely fuck all to do with women who are concerned about the erosion of single sex spaces and rights.

Again, he has limited comments on that tweet.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 28/06/2020 11:44

An MP is elected to serve his constituency.

Be interested to know how many women in his constituency have dv in their history, and how they may feel about his statements on the matter.

What he's saying is that women talking about their dv history isn't fair, because it can cause problems for males. That is what he's saying, by inference.

Or - I'm trying to be charitable - women shouldn't refer to their dv history when talking. Or women shouldn't mention their dv history in relation to discussing why they might have issues with males in their spaces. That's it? I am honestly trying, while aware of my white-hot rage, to parse out and make sense of his words.

He is saying that by referring to her dv experiences of abuse, JKR was trying to exert a form of emotional manipulation.

So, has he a better way that women should talk about our experiences of dv? Would it be better if we didn't mention if the person doing the violence was a male, would that help him out?

@Justhadathought

The fracture in the Labour party is becoming ever more pronounced.

This guy is on the front bench?

Yea. Not one of the big positions though,

I agree with others that a man who shows such one contempt for women is not fit to be an MP. How could any female constituent of his feel confident that he would take her concerns seriously? He’s seems the type who likes the power trip - strikes me as being in the same ilk as Matthew Hopkins, gleefully getting the witch-pricker out...

noblegiraffe · 28/06/2020 11:21

Being sacked from a public role for professional misconduct is not only not ‘cancelling’, it’s essential to maintain faith in that role.

RLB was sacked because she retweeted an article containing an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. She was sacked because antisemitism has been a massive issue for the Labour Party and because swift and strict action is needed so that the Jewish Community can see that their concerns are being taken seriously.

LRM has done something worse as he actually wrote the words himself. Labour has had an issue with women leaving, and they should be aware of this, although it is nowhere near as well publicised. KS has a chance to begin to repair relations, and this situation is ideal because it is also about trans issues. To be able to give a clear signal that it is unacceptable to abuse women for their GC position while being able to say nothing about trans issues is a gift.

MrBennsshop · 28/06/2020 11:20

We mustn't forget Angela Rayner. She's right up there as deputy leader and was one of the signatories to that statement about WPUK. I'm hoping she does something sackable very soon.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 28/06/2020 11:18

Absolutely agree Olive, however I will be very surprised if he gets the chop. I hope he does, but I won't hold my breath. His fake grovelling and being a man will save him from the can.

littlbrowndog · 28/06/2020 11:16

He should go

He gets paid by us working to pay our taxes

JKR hasn’t sloped off to Monaco to avoid taxes

To slag her off like that

You can watch selina Todd own him on a politics show

His face when a woman wouldn’t bow down to him oh great man speaking such words of wisedom

CharlieParley · 28/06/2020 11:14

Another fauxpology. The man's misogyny wasn't an error of judgement, it's been plain to see on various other occasions (notably in an interview on BBC where Selina Todd was also present and he was not shy to espouse a view that righteously denies women their rights in the name of transgender ideology and demands they are silenced when they object).

And removing the quote from the article compounds misogyny with dishonesty. The better solution would be to ask the publisher to add a disclaimer to the article with his apology.

Let's hope that at the very least KS has twigged that openly disparaging survivors for sharing their experiences is not a vote winner.

And how depressing that that's as much as I'm allowing myself to hope for from the Labour party.

Highperbolay · 28/06/2020 11:12

Yeah something has definitely happened for him to go from such frothing misogyny to 'Sorry.... Sorry.... I'm really sorry.... Please.... I'm Sorry....'

Twat.

fascinated · 28/06/2020 11:11

KS should at least understand the definition of discrimination. Clue it’s a lot narrower than most of this bunch believe.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 28/06/2020 11:08

Keir has obviously given him a huge bollocking and threatened him with the sack, although why he doesn't just sack him I don't know

He’s probably had a bollocking (or warning!) from someone in the Leader Of The Opposition’s Office, but not heard directly from KS yet.

That’ll be tomorrow’s to do list, I reckon.

Highperbolay · 28/06/2020 11:04

Absolutely loving watching him shit his pants over this! I agree, this wasn't just a ill thought out tweet or remark, this was written in an article. Keir has obviously given him a huge bollocking and threatened him with the sack, although why he doesn't just sack him I don't know. Keir should go a few more rounds of giving these idiots a taste of their own medicine and then hopefully this ridiculous 'cancel culture' will die out.

Owen Jones is such a lily livered little toad as well isn't he? He always 'retweets' stuff about JKR rather than making a statement himself and if he has tweeted anything himself he has limited the comments only to those he follows because he knows he would be exposed as a massive misogynist and would be having to block people all day long. He has retweeted someone posting the full quote which was 'taken out of context' but actually the full quote is even worse!

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 28/06/2020 10:59

Deffo going to keep an eye on it

Even my usually tory voting dh is saying that depending how keir moves forward with various issues he can see himself voting for labour

Sushiroller · 28/06/2020 10:59

olive is spot on.

I want that man out of politics. It is not acceptable behaviour or attitude as a public figure

RoyalCorgi · 28/06/2020 10:58

LRM issues an apology, but OJ et al are trying to defend what he said.

I wouldn't expect anything else.

Has OJ put out a statement of support for black lesbian lawyer Allison Bailey, victimised by her employer for her beliefs?

Let me guess.
