They will not rest until every disobedient woman is purged from society.

@BabyItsAWildWorld

Thanks for the free speech link. I'll look into this.
I've written to PEN asking them why they are not speaking out in support of gender critical women being allowed to express their opinions, particularly in light of JKR and Barness Nicolson. I sent them a link to this - women writers and artists talking about what they faced when they spoke out. wildwomanwritingclub.wordpress.com/2020/06/10/what-it-costs-women_speak-out/

I've also expressed my views to the Booker Board, and sent letters of support to JKR's publishers and agents. I think its important to start to be vocal to those taking a public stance on these issues.

i dont doubt at all that DB has sufered and continues to suffer from homophobia at all

but as a man he's not being asked to give up anything to accommodate TW

like most men women's rights only matter to him up to the point where it challenges him and then suddenly they can go under the bus

merrymouse · 26/06/2020 09:58

Damian Barr used to care about women's rights and had a more measured view.

Really? Or was he just trotting out the approved doctrine?

justanotherneighinparadise · 26/06/2020 09:57

I just read the last few tweets of DB where he talks about all the terrible hateful tweets he has apparently received. It made me think once again about the professional victim chart that exists and who seems to sit at the top and who resides at the bottom. Off the top of my head I’m guessing the person sitting right at the bottom with no ability to wave the victim card has to be the heterosexual white male living a heteronormative lifestyle with right wing views. Just above him has to be the white gender critical female. Preferably a middle aged gender critical female as having lost the ability to reproduce they are now pretty much worthless. Do we think being a lesbian GC female puts them lower than a heterosexual GC female. I’m pondering this 🤔

Waferbiscuit · 26/06/2020 09:57

@abraid2 what Damian Barr fails to realise is that an MP voting against same sex marriage based on her religious beliefs really isn't a personal slight against him.

Do we really need to do a values assessment for every senior post holder. And who decides who passes the test?

Abraid2 · 26/06/2020 09:50

I'm shocked by DB. He seemed one of the good guys.

Waferbiscuit · 26/06/2020 09:43

Damian Barr used to care about women's rights and had a more measured view. Now he cares about Damian Barr and profile building.

So much of this is just showing off who has the most friends in high places to bully organisations. Very worrying.

Abraid2 · 26/06/2020 09:41

even in the 18th century the politics was weirdly not much difference. The wealthy right wing faction earning their wealth through other peoples misery. The left wing liberals, the underclass. Nothing really changes. It just comes in waves

Except it's the left-wing liberals now who want to give away women's rights.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 25/06/2020 22:43

Thanks, Baby. Looks interesting. Will have a thorough read of it and consider joining. I had to leave Liberty.

@justanotherneighinparadise

This text is interest re. an academic expressing an opinion re. BLM, stating that white lives don’t matter. Cambridge University promoted her and released a statement saying they defend the right of their academics to state lawful opinions that others many find controversial.

I am 100% sure that if that same academic had stated that women are adult human females she would have been sacked.

It's surely a good thing that Cambridge have defended Dr Gopal, because their defence of free speech isn't specific to her or to one issue. If in future a Cambridge academic does say that there are two sexes, or something equally controversial, this will increase their chances of being allowed to get away with it
BabyItsAWildWorld · 25/06/2020 21:40

I've joined this: freespeechunion.org/join/

Yes it's Toby Young which will cause much hand wringing I'm sure.
But I don't care; I like the fact people say controversial things I don't agree with. I want them to.

Long list of other supporters on the site, many lawyers, which is good to see. They have been supporting Posie.

For me this collective think that is being enforced is scary, and it's a much bigger issue than the GRA, but it is what is allowing women's rights to be removed.

We seem to be rapidly moving ever further from classic liberal values and that should worry us all. It's never gone well in history.

AbsintheFriends · 25/06/2020 21:03

I think we do have to keep reminding ourselves that twitter is not real life.

(It concerns me that journalism is increasingly about reporting what happens on twitter as if it is, though.)

happydappy2 · 25/06/2020 20:36

I hate to say it but any publicity is good publicity-a woman being cancelled for holding a perfectly legitimate point of view, is bad for everyone. She had a vote, she used it, she is not homophobic. This is just more sunlight on the hideousness of what's happening right now. Anyone with eyes in their head can see it, people are waking up to this and our numbers are growing. I for one am not going to give up-I'm spreading awareness to everyone I meet!

If you need a break, take it.

I'm not done. Plenty of us here to take up the slack for a bit. Plenty more coming.

justanotherneighinparadise · 25/06/2020 19:39

@CaraDune

I suppose I just had a vision of finally getting a bit of a pushback going, but doing so in the knowledge that 4 years from now if Starmer keeps playing things the way he is, we'll have a Labour government (which in many, many respects will be a good thing, but will be a fucking disaster for women's rights), then it will be full steam ahead on the legislative front - "gender" will replace "sex" in the EA, we'll have self ID, and probably explicit legislation (like they have in New York City) making misgendering a criminal offence.
That may well happen and the pendulum will swing again.

I was watching a very interesting program last night called A House through Time and he was discussing a house in Bristol which was owned by a wealthy slave trader and charting all its residents. The politics of the era was fascinating snd proved to me that even in the 18th century the politics was weirdly not much difference. The wealthy right wing faction earning their wealth through other peoples misery. The left wing liberals, the underclass. Nothing really changes. It just comes in waves.

merrymouse · 25/06/2020 19:30

Someone pointed out on twitter that Kenneth Baker (who introduced Section 28 as part of the Thatcher cabinet) was a Booker prize trustee until two years ago.

He didn't get hounded out.

Which illustrates why women are never really 'done' with this nonsense.

poppyfieldsinmay · 25/06/2020 19:05

I'm not done! Things like this just fire me up! My Dad taught me to stand up to bullies and damn right I will. I form my own views, I don't let others form them for me.

SerenityNowwwww · 25/06/2020 18:56

Hypocrites and weasels.

justanotherneighinparadise · 25/06/2020 18:55

You can be out of the ‘game’ but your gender critical views will still be yours, there’s no getting away from it. Just look after yourself and let them eat themselves which they will eventually. That purity spiral is starting to spin faster and faster and the snake will start to eat it’s own tail once they’ve silenced all dissenting voices.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 25/06/2020 18:54

Lamahaha no sons either but I do worry for my young nieces, there is only so much I can take though I’m afraid, I’m David throwing the stones but they never hit the target no matter how hard I try and I’ve no stones left anymore.

Goosefoot · 25/06/2020 18:49

THB even if they weren't GC I'd be happy to have people coming out and supporting freedom of thought/speech/democratic political process.
