Would you vote Conservative at the next election?

Obviously this question isn't really relevant if you vote Conservative anyway!

Over my 25-odd year voting history I have voted Lib Dem, Labour and Green. I consider myself left wing and would never have considered a Tory vote. But if the principle parties maintain their current positions on women's rights then for the first time ever I will consider a Conservative vote at the next election - not simply because this one issue trumps everything else (although I personally feel very strongly about it, education, health and the environment are still hugely important to me) but because I simply don't trust the critical thinking skills of any party who have allowed themselves to be so thoroughly hijacked by the trans rights agenda and attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Anyone else feel this way?

Your actually coming across as sneering at someone’s real life traumatic experience - which is deeply unpleasant

Yes Princess- you really are.

I particularly liked your "gotcha" about people mistakenly assuming you voted Labour. In a Westminster context it's still a straight Labour/Conservative contest - voting for one of the minority parties is largely irrelevant.

I suppose you might be in Scotland where we are unfortunate enough to have the option of voting for the SNP.

On that note I see Joanna "let's let Alex Salmond back into the party as soon as possible- his own Counsel described him a creepy sex- pest, but hey he was found not guilty" Cherry is being touted as some sort of saviour of women kind.

Dances · 23/06/2020 14:29

What do you mean Ken ? Are you looking for the price of protecting yourself from being compelled to be naked? How 'far right' will I go to avoid it?.

Maybe you should ask at which point is it ok that women are compelled to be naked? At the cost of the NHS? Because the Tories fucked up Covid?

At some point in the proceedings though, it is clear that is women who need to pay.

Where is your line?

QuentinWinters · 23/06/2020 14:26

Vote for who you like. OP asked if we would vote Conservative at the next election, I won't because the majority of their policies are damaging to the most vulnerable in society including women. The fact they can recognise the sex of the person they are damaging is less important to me. Others have different points of view, that's why we have a democracy. It's not lack of critical thinking to not vote for that bunch of idiots though

PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock · 23/06/2020 14:25

@lakeswimmer

DH and I were discussing the absence of critical thinking the other day after a heated discussion with teen DC who is inclined to believe anything they read on social media. We were wondering if there might be a need for some kind of board game which teaches critical thinking in kids (and adults) Grin
It could do with also teaching that we don't live in a two party system with compulsory voting, if some of the recent responses to the thread are anything to go by.
Dances · 23/06/2020 14:22

Mental thread. Being accused of 'kicking off 'and 'superiority' when talking about choosing the political party which promises to stop women being forced to be naked in front of males in womens facilities, which I am frightened of due to abuse is....a first.

Although I am damn sure that I am not going to align myself with people who think this is reasonable.

Just when you think it cant get more horrible. I am not going to apologise for protecting myself. I am not a bigot for not wanting to be naked in front of males. Fuck SAKE!

I can't stand the current narrow mindedness and intolerance of different views dressed up as moral high ground. It shows a total inability to consider alternative views/different perspectives and is utterly tedious

Precisely. It is a reflection of what is being taught in schools and being promoted on social media. Zero critical thinking. The regurgitation of sloppy slogans. And a recurrent chant that Conservatives are literally Nazis.

You should take a look at your own words on this thread. To multiple posters. Do you understand the meaning of 'irony?'
You're not one to be suggesting others don't understand meanings of words when you see ones that aren't there. I'm afraid you simply aren't in a position to question anyone's understanding after that fuck up.

Would that include, say the BNP, NF etc? You know the other really racist parties?

Yes, I'd like to know that too. And what about the Communists? They're much further left than merely noting what austerity does to women, and they're not very happy with self ID either. Would people vote for them on the basis of their support for women's rights as a sex class? I'm quite happy to be clear I wouldn't vote for any of them.

KenDodd · 23/06/2020 14:04

We will vote for whichever party commits to supporting women's rights as a sex class.

It is an example of profound political tribalism. With a serious empathy bypass.

The irony.

I think you should back off Dances she has shared on this thread that she was abused and because of that experience she now has to focus on herself. Which many many victims have to do.

Signature No, that's not what I mean, and it's clear from my post that it's not

I think I have made it clear that this is a single issue for me. I will not be told there are 'more important' issues by randoms lecturing me on the internet. Funnily enough.

I'm genuinely laughing at posts asking me go consider the impact on women, to a woman who has suffered abuse and violence.

I really want to know the pecking order of abuse - it really should be made clear so that we get to know our place

It's never a very good idea to assume a person you're talking to hasn't suffered abuse.

Anyway, laugh or not, I'll attempt to dampen the flames a bit. Unfortunately, we are not currently in a position where there's a major party that isn't shitting on women. There are excellent individuals, such as Joanna Cherry in the sea of dick panderers of the SNP, but no more than that.

I actually completely get and think it's understandable for someone to say I accept that austerity perpetrates these harms on women and also that self ID does, and I have chosen to prioritise whichever one of these for this list of reasons. That's fine. It might be that I'd make a different choice, but it would at least show understanding of the situation and ownership of the implications of the choice. Getting angry at anyone daring to even mention the implications of austerity though, nah. No excuse for that.

lakeswimmer · 23/06/2020 13:58

The authoritarianism. The nauseating self righteousness of many Labour politicians. And voters. The tedious demonisation of Conservative voters as literally Nazis. This is said by people who are so politically and historically illiterate, it is laughable. When Labour constituencies which had voted Labour for a hundred years switched parties last December, one would have thought it might be a catalyst for a sober review of what they are doing and why it is alienating millions of voters. Zero evidence of that.

This ^ I'm a centrist who's voted Lib Dem and Green in the past but have either not voted or spoiled my ballot at the last two GEs because of their views on women's rights. I'm dismayed by the way anyone who has a different opinion to the woke left-wing is dismissed as a bigot/transphobe/racist etc with no debate allowed. So many people believe their opinions are actually right that anyone with a different opinion is wrong rather than someone who's come to a different conclusion to them.

I can't stand the current narrow mindedness and intolerance of different views dressed up as moral high ground. It shows a total inability to consider alternative views/different perspectives and is utterly tedious.

My superiority? Projection much?

I have said my concern is for abused women like me and protecting our privacy. What, exactly, is 'superior' about that?

Except that I am unreasonable to centre my own safety and peace of mind. Get go the back luv.

BovaryX · 23/06/2020 13:55

@Dances

No, you have out me, as an abused woman, down the list and it's you who is taking the superior tone.

Left wing authoritarianism - tell us what's good for us and we'll blody like it.

Next up - weaponising abuse

Dances

Nobody has the right to harangue you for your voting choices. You don't need to defend them. The UK is a democracy. The authoritarianism and self righteousness of those who think they can dictate that everyone is singing the same slogans from the same cliched liturgy? Nope. No sale.

BarbieandKenBruce · 23/06/2020 13:54

@PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock

They should be, but those of us who think that haven't really got anywhere to go at the moment have we?

Well, quite.

KenDodd · 23/06/2020 13:53

@Aesopfable

I take it you weren’t born in the 1970s then?

I was actually born in 1969 and grew up in a poor northern city under Thatcher, even that wasn't as bad as the damage done in the last ten years by the Tories.

PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock · 23/06/2020 13:53

I have read the sequence of posts. Actually. You seem to think you occupy the moral highground by voting Labour. You dont. You seem to think this self identified elevation gives you the right to lecture women for daring to suggest they might vote differently to you. It doesn't.
Then you haven't been reading them very well, as there's literally nothing in any of my posts saying I vote Labour. For the very good reason that it's been some time since I did. And if you can't manage to read a few posts without inventing something that isn't there, you're not qualified to ascertain anything else about them either.

Carlottacoffee · 23/06/2020 13:52

Well you evidently don't give the slightest fuck about all the women who have suffered and will continue to suffer due to Tory economic policy, seeing as how you kicked off at the mere mention of them

I think Dances has every right to put herself first. Why should she put her pain behind everyone else's. She’s not being selfish - she is in self preservation mode. Many of us are.

Anoualler · 23/06/2020 13:52

Yes, I would, although I live in one of the strongest UK Tory strongholds so this is academic. Lib Dem have lost me for ever to this cause.
It’s not because I think the Tories support women necessarily (I think Liz Truss’s position is carefully considered and thoughtfully put together which makes her an outlier). But that could change if KS - who I really like - took an immutable, unequivocal position in favour of women’s rights.
(Even Blair told the Labour Party to stay out of the transgender issue and not politicise it, so there is form for support of some kind from a type of Labour politician).

Hardly. You're getting angry at the mere mention of the women whose abuse and suffering has been weaponised by Tory economic policies (and for all you know I could be one of them). You obviously couldn't care less about them, and your posts to me trying to prevent the mention of what the Conservatives have done to women reek with your belief in your superiority.
