Would you vote Conservative at the next election?

Obviously this question isn't really relevant if you vote Conservative anyway!

Over my 25-odd year voting history I have voted Lib Dem, Labour and Green. I consider myself left wing and would never have considered a Tory vote. But if the principle parties maintain their current positions on women's rights then for the first time ever I will consider a Conservative vote at the next election - not simply because this one issue trumps everything else (although I personally feel very strongly about it, education, health and the environment are still hugely important to me) but because I simply don't trust the critical thinking skills of any party who have allowed themselves to be so thoroughly hijacked by the trans rights agenda and attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Anyone else feel this way?

@RedToothBrush

There is so much infighting in labour at the moment , they could not run a government so they need to sort that out

Ho ho ho!

Just watch the Conservatives...

Labour are a mess, but they are matched by the Tories who are waking up to the 'news' that Johnson is a lazy waste of space who is good at pr but not a lot else.

Who will I vote for?

Nfi. They all need to sort their acts out rather than being an embarrassing shower of shit.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) I don't have to make a decision for some years.

but the tories move as one when the chips are done. Their tory identity matters most in that sense - they will get rid of boris if that is the consensus I just don;t see labour that way - they have multiple identities (large umbrella etc) and ultimately that makes them harder to lead.

Boris has an 80 seat majority, if he gets a grip on things over the next 12 months, the tories will forgive him

Keir has a harder hill to climb but lets hope he can do it (lose his woke membership is my advice, if he wants it Grin

booklover164 · 23/06/2020 08:49

Absolutely no way on earth. They're a total shit shower and have proved themselves to be utterly lacking in competence or compassion ( no surprise there then). These things don't seem to bother the majority of voters though!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 23/06/2020 08:46

I would. I spoiled my ballot last time as I couldn't bring myself to vote Tory, but now could I vote labour, lib dem or green when those parties believe that anything other than TWAW is hate speech.

With the new committment to single sex spaces I will certainly consider it. I will also be getting back in touch with my MP to see if he will get off the fence now that there is a lot more positive movement on this issue, post JKR.

I do live on a safe Tory seat so in reality not doesn't make a lot of difference, however.

Clearly the line the right wing press wants us to believe us that the Government did the best they could on COVID, nobody else would have done any better, etc. If that’s the case why are we ranked so low in the world for dealing with it? Why have we got 60,000 deaths and counting while most European countries are a fraction of that? And it’s not just to do with the totally incompetent reaction to the immediate crisis. It’s 10 years of Tory cuts to vital areas like public health, including surveillance systems, and other extremely basic services that are simply not in place now to protect us.

For heaven’s sake, Vietnam managed to do test and trace and stop the virus in its tracks. NZ all but eliminated it too. We might have a functioning test and trace strategy in place by late autumn. If we’re really lucky. No, it’s not the case that the government bears no responsibility for this crisis or the tens of thousands of excess deaths. Don’t let them get away with it. We’ve got the worst of all worlds: one of the highest rates of illness and deaths from COVID in the world, and one of the worst- hit economies.

Floisme · 23/06/2020 08:43

I would not vote for a government led by Boris Johnson. Would I vote Conservative under a different leader at some future point? I honestly no longer know, which is not a sentence I expected to ever be writing.

I've been voting Labour 45 years but this struggle has opened my eyes to how little regard the core of the party has for women. Now that I've seen it, I'm not sure if I can ever go back. And it's not as if I can switch to Lib Dems or Greens either.

I've also been forced to reflect on my old tribal allegiance and I'm embarrassed now at how uncritical and juvenile it was.

But definitely not while Johnson is in charge. Mind you, I imagine a lot of Conservatives will feel pretty queasy about that too.

Newuser123123 · 23/06/2020 08:43

No, but in the last GE I emailed my candidates with my concerns about women's rights, labour ignored me, LD told me to do one (I was a member at the time) but Conservative totally got it and gave me a very thoughtful response. I still didn't vote for him but it would have made me feel better if he'd been elected.

weepingwillow22 · 23/06/2020 08:42

The tmTories have set an exeptionally poor example of standing up for women's rights. For example their 'rape clause' to access child tax credits was disgusting. www.politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2017/04/07/the-government-s-rape-clause-is-a-callous-attack-on-victims

Their policies have led tothe closureof numerous support services that save women's lives, so no I would not vote for them.

Imissmoominmama · 23/06/2020 08:42

No.

dottiedodah · 23/06/2020 08:41

Emperor Covidula .Thats what I think as well! Never voted Tory yet ,but cannot see how Labour would have managed the Crisis any better really. Covid 19 makes Brexit look like a walk in the park! It is always easy to be wise after the event really .Lockdown was a last resort ,as we have seen why with the financial fallout! It is a very difficult balancing act for any govt!

FromMarch2020 · 23/06/2020 08:40

Didn't before and won't next time either.

I care for people that have less than I do. I am lucky, I have a good income, home etc. Lots of others have so little. Food banks - I mean seriously! No a chance.

QuentinWinters · 23/06/2020 08:36

No way, no day. The conservatives policies are much more damaging to women than self-id. If they had their way we would all be back at home, as per the natural order of things, wiping bums and cooking their tea.

They've shown that plainly, firstly with their comments and policies around elderly care in 2017, and again in the pandemic with their total lack of thought around childcare provision for working mums.

Also their leader is a lying narcissist so why anyone would vote for them I don't know.

RedToothBrush · 23/06/2020 08:36

Patbutcherismyhero · 23/06/2020 08:35

Never. How anyone can have any faith in them after the utter chaos of covid is beyond me. I have always been a labour voter and I think Stamer could do very well.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 23/06/2020 08:35

No.

But I live in an ultra safe labour seat and know both my MP and all 3 of my cllrs, all have some merit, even if they aren’t particularly exciting!

If I were to move I would look at each candidate carefully rather than just voting on party lines. Doubt I would ever vote for a Tory though, 2020 has been a shitshow so far!

sashagabadon · 23/06/2020 08:32
@Helmetbymidnight I struggle to see what labour would have done differently re covid. It’s not like they would have started closing borders in February, if you are referring to lockdown delay it’s a bit deluded to think it would have made any difference. Many people don’t mind a hard brexit, or even want one. Re racism it doesn’t seem any more racist than other parties, I’m not sure what makes you think it is. I’m not sure I’d call it open minded to consider defecting to the tories but pretending that labour is any different is deluded, they’re just two different brands of more or less the same thing.
exactly - labour would ahve done the same as they would have been guided by the same advice as the scientists are not party political - they would have been the exact same scientists
They would have had the same ppe issues , the same testing issues etc
If Boris had closed the borders back in Feb, labour would have gone nuts with cries of racism so hindsight is a wonderful thing and I don't remember them shouting about care homes back in Feb either.
Truth is COVID caught all politicians unawares and so mistakes were made. Torys were obsessed with Brexit, Labour were in the middle of a leader election.

anyway, don't want to derail - as this is about voting tory not the covid response.

tiredanddangerous · 23/06/2020 08:26

No. Never have, never will. Whilst women’s rights is a crucial issue (I am a woman with two daughters) I cannot rank that above homelessness and poverty. We are living in a country where in 2020 tens of thousands of people cannot afford to feed their children. I will never vote for the party which led us to that.

StarintheMorning · 23/06/2020 08:25

Well I couldn’t bring myself to vote for any of them at the last election, so I spoilt my ballot paper. I feel disenfranchised at every election, as I live in one of the safest Tory seats. I have voted Labour at every election since 1983 in three different constituencies and I have never voted for the returned MP.
This was a strongly discussed issue on here at the last general election, and I get that politics shouldn’t be single issue, but for me at the moment, it is. If this is how left wing parties treat women now what will they be like if they actually have power and the mandate to do as they want.

I still cannot bring myself to vote Tory, and my local Tory MP is useless. She has one surgery every 4/6 weeks, in a huge rural area and won’t deal with anyone direct outside of these.

So I felt free to ‘protest’ at the last election, basically because we knew who would be elected, my vote would not be missed, but also because, courtesy of Posie Parker I had some wonderful stickers that were looking for a good home!😀

For those that said it’s pointless protesting, no one notices spoilt ballot papers, our local Labour Party noted many female protest votes and despite having made gains in local Town and County elections (unheard of in this area) their vote tanked at the GE.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 23/06/2020 08:24

I'd vote Labour if Kier Starmer wakes his woke idiots up and protects womens rights.
If not then it'll be Conservative.

Defenestratethecat · 23/06/2020 08:24

I did in the last election for the first time in my life. It will be the last. I knew I would regret it. There were good reasons, but turns out they weren't quite good enough Hmm

sashagabadon · 23/06/2020 08:22

@Helmetbymidnight

its fascinating to see that despite their handling of covid, despite the continuous stream of lies and cover-ups and racism, despite heading for a hard brexit, people feel that voting for them is keeping an open mind Grin
but people have different views. I feel they have handled covid as best they could with a novel virus no one knew about in Jan. Yes they could have done some things better (ppe, care homes, testing at start spring to mind) but some things have been good (NHS, nightingale hospitals, testing now excellent - not back in March/ April, vaccine and treatments, financial response)

Labour have had these issues too and would have followed the same science if they had won in Dec - the same scientists would have been giving the same scientific advice at the same time.

I try and look fairly at both.

Labour could be back in the game in 4 years time - I hope they are but they need to get a few more competent ministers - I like Keir but think a lot of the MP's are just not good enough and I think they need to drop the identity stuff as that just divides people.
I hope they do, I think Keir wants to - but his membership (young, woke etc) stops him. He needs to ditch as many of them as he can.

testing987654321 · 23/06/2020 08:21

Well I spoiled my ballot paper at the last election. I emailed my candidates regarding women's rights and transgender clashing.

Responses were:
Lib Dem: TWAW end of argument. I pointed out it was nonsense in returrn.
Labour (safe seat): appreciated my concerns but TWAW and my hypothetical question re smear tests hadn't happened in his experience so he didn't see an issue.
Green: the most thoughtful response, understood issues but TWAW and we must stand up for them.
Tory: no response.

I can't see myself ever voting Tory, but I will not vote for anyone who won't support women's rights.

My hypothetical question was asking whose rights wins in a direct clash of me asking for a female to perform a smear test and a TW saying they can do it because they are female.

AdoreTheBeach · 23/06/2020 08:21

Yes. My opinion is they’ve done the best they can in these situations. I know there’s many opinions, this is mine.

Helmetbymidnight · 23/06/2020 08:19

why are you asking me about labour? this is about voting cons- no i wouldnt - boris govt is beyond appalling.

we are ranked 150/180 in the world for worst response to covid in the world. i think anyone who considers theyve handled this well hasnt been paying attention.

DaisiesandButtercups · 23/06/2020 08:19

Like you OP, I have voted Green, Labour and Lib Dem in the past.

I feel totally politically homeless. It is pretty shocking that not one party on the left supports women.

Like you I live in one of the safest Tory seats in the country. The Tory candidate typically gets more votes than all the other candidates combined. So my vote is pretty meaningless anyway. However I would find it hard not to turn out at all. I may end up spoiling my paper...
