Ash Sarkar - twitter really is grim

The story is in the papers now: www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/reading-stabbings-muslim-journalist-death-22227933

I'm diametrically opposed to Ash's views on some issues. But this is quite clearly a) racist bullying, b) misogynistic bullying and c) people using a very horrible incident to unleash their own prejudiced vile viewpoints.

And even by that definition a jibe about someone’s perceived lack of professional timing is not a ‘call out’.

Call out culture is real and it is shit, but for it to be a call out the other person has to actually do something or say something to be called out on.

Otherwise it’s just making shit up to suit your own narrative, isn’t it?

And she posted them after the murders were reported, but people have assumed this meant she knew about them. Which they clearly have no way of knowing.

And if you are going to condemn everyone who posted something banal on social media after the murders, you are going to have to condemn a lot of people, inevitably including people whose political views are in line with your own.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 23/06/2020 11:10

That’s still not a call out! It’s just a jibe about timing, but there is no evidence

Perhaps we have a different understanding if the phrase 'call out'

I found this definition online.

'To verbally hold someone accountable for their words or actions. Other usage: call you out, call them out, call him/her out
"I will call out anything that sounds stupid ." "I will call out your actions if they are questionable."'

PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock · 23/06/2020 11:09

@ATomeOfOnesOwn

Princess she posted the photo after the murders. I have no idea about the entire orange emojis saga.
Ok, well that's quite a significant part of this so maybe have a look. Basically there are people claiming she was using them as a celebration of the murders. Using references to The Godfather and Libyan agricultural exports to back this up. It's as daft as it sounds.

And she posted them after the murders were reported, but people have assumed this meant she knew about them. Which they clearly have no way of knowing.

@Xanthangum

communicating via the medium of citrus fruit Grin

From now on I shall wave limes and grapefruit at you all, and you can decide amongst yourselves whether I am unpleasant, incompetent or merely fruity.

And why not? At the end of each day we can collect them all up and make a fruit salad.

I may be missing some of the replies as I don't have a twitter account, but they way I'd read the tweets I can see is more criticising Sarkar for not being a good enough journalist to have noticed there was a terror attack, rather than for having known and done it deliberately. I get that, actually. It makes more sense than waaah, she incited death threats for attention and/or is communicating via the medium of citrus fruit.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/06/2020 10:59

She hadn't posted for a few hours before posting, and isn't actually on it constantly because there are often breaks of several hours between tweets. Just as if you could possibly know everything she'd been doing for the last few hours and whether she had reception, battery etc.

Agree. Everyone takes a break from it occasionally!

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 23/06/2020 10:58

That’s still not a call out! It’s just a jibe about timing, but there is no evidence of any actual wrong doing TO call out!

Fucks sake. Sarkar has some idiotic political opinions well worth criticising but youse lot are just tilting at windmills here.

PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock · 23/06/2020 10:54

@DidoLamenting

Your argument here rests solely on the assumption that Sarkar was aware of the attacks. Given that you have no way of knowing whether this is true

Oh please- it's not credible that some like Sarkar who is constantly on social media would not have been aware.

Again, you simply are not in a position to make this claim. You're making an assumption with nothing to back it up. She hadn't posted for a few hours before posting, and isn't actually on it constantly because there are often breaks of several hours between tweets. Just as if you could possibly know everything she'd been doing for the last few hours and whether she had reception, battery etc. You make a fool of yourself by pretending otherwise.

But there is NO CALL OUT

DuDuDu you need to click on the tweets to see them in context. And circling part of that tweet and ignoring the context doesn't help.

And that wasn't the first tweet, they are in reverse chronological order.

It was this one:

The one you link to is a reply to a reply to ripx4nutmeg's post, but the reply is from a protected account so you can't read it unless you are following.

The call out was made by a gender critical woman

Was it now?

mobile.twitter.com/ripx4nutmeg

Looks pretty gender critical to me.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 23/06/2020 10:46

No, as I posted upthread, I think it’s a shithole and I never use it.

I don’t think the tweet you linked to says what you are pretending it does though.

@DidoLamenting

But observing that Sarkar is tone-deaf and/or trolling was something first pointed out by a woman, as I said

The call out was made by a gender critical woman. The post by Sarkar was tone- deaf, crass and insensitive. There is nothing wrong in pointing that out. The defences on here of "oh well that's just what her generation are like" are feeble. Maybe Sarkar should have thought twice before posting it.

Since any criticism of Sarkar is now being twisted into support for death threats I suppose I had better post again that of course the threats are not acceptable.

Your argument here rests solely on the assumption that Sarkar was aware of the attacks. Given that you have no way of knowing whether this is true, it's not the pointing out that people of that age often post selfies that's feeble.

Only if you think every other person in the UK who posted something mundane and happy that evening, is also tone-deaf, crass and insensitive. That is quite a high bar.
