Bunbury's guide to community disruptors part 5

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember our monitors would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3691023-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-4

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

Go well Witches Gin

I’ve had two deletions for no reason recently and I asked for explanation and got none. I think if you are voluble you get targeted. I regularly name change so may be due another one.

FloresTorres · 15/08/2020 09:13

Whole threads deleted now. Mental health.
The P45's are probably in the post, metaphorically speaking.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 13/08/2020 02:41

It’s strange times. I find myself wondering if the divine Germaine ever returned that coat. She’s gone from us, but her example lives on. WWGD I often find myself asking.

Sadly, chase the fuckers out of the garden with a loaded shotgun is rarely practical, but in the spirit and all that.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/08/2020 23:15

Might not be a bad idea.

bishopgiggles · 12/08/2020 15:19

I make it the 30th July on this thread complaining about MN mod’ing (quoted above).

Oh yeah, duh! Missed that somehow.
I'm probably going to namechange more often...

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/08/2020 15:06

Good points. Hard trying to keep track of anonymous people that sometimes need to change their names. Hopefully all those mentioned are resting or busy or here under different names.

ItsLateHumpty · 12/08/2020 14:59

Re @Michelleoftheresistance

So do I, but I have an awful feeling she doesn't do name changes.
I hope you’re wrong in this case. Bloody awful how we lose people with no warning.

I'm wondering if it's worth having a Mumsnet exiles board
This would stop me trying to work out who’s ‘missing’ but people name change, and if they’re like me, they won’t fess up. Not that my absence would be noted, but I def miss R0 (missing again), Lang, Bowl. Rufus and Littl are quiet, etc etc
Our roll call of ‘missing’ is huge, and sad.

That's worrying. Her last post was on 27 July.

Anyway, we have loads of new posters, lots of positive news, and we keep on keeping on. Bunbury is here for all.

I heart michelle

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/08/2020 10:40

I'm wondering if it's worth having a Mumsnet exiles board somewhere, or some way to find people who've been banned?

I'm on Spinster, though don't visit very often. I think of it as a kind of lifeboat destination, though.

@nauticant

There have been a couple of threads recentlly where posters have expressed concerns about the normalisation of adult sexual matters around children. Some other posters have been very active in trying to make the concerns look like over-reaction, delusion, paranoia. Even going so far as to say that anyone expressing concern is likely to be a paedophile. It is very sinister.
That's been the case for a very long time, all over Mumsnet. I've assumed it's paedophiles trying to get parents to ignore their feelings of disquiet.
wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 12/08/2020 10:06

It's worrisome.

I'd noticed that too. Classic DARVO, innit?

@Michelleoftheresistance

The modding seems to be a bit..... different to usual at the moment.

I queried, very politely, what was wrong with the post that earned me a strike, since I honestly don't know, and I pointed out that it was a historical post, and odd that someone had found and objected to it weeks after it was written. Got a very terse reply back that didn't explain, just said flatly that the strike was remaining, it was a very untypical email in style from HQ.

Very difficult to keep the rules, no matter how willing you are, if the rules aren't something that can be explained or guided on, and it's obvious that you asking is just getting you deeper into disfavour.

I haven’t seen Michelleoftheresistance post since this. I hope it’s just a name change.

I'm getting cranky in this heat. AIBU is full of nitwits and/or people arguing in bad faith.

SophocIestheFox · 09/08/2020 13:22

You’re not even allowed to point out when an obvious bullshit post is bullshit at the moment! well, you kind of are, but you’ll earn yourself a deletion if the bullshitter doesn’t like getting called on it 😂

nauticant · 09/08/2020 13:21

Trying to control troll hunting is a good idea. It's one of those types of behaviour that can snowball and you end up with loads of bad faith activities leading to a decline in trust. It's one of those corrosive behaviours that is toxic to a community like this one.

334bu · 09/08/2020 13:21

That is very worrying!

334bu · 09/08/2020 13:19

Thank you. So if you think a post is suspect you should say nothing and simply report it. I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for the info

OneEpisode · 09/08/2020 13:15

The troll hunting thing is across the whole of mn. You are allowed to identity troll-like posters and report them to mn, but we are not allowedto post on the thread.

334bu · 09/08/2020 13:14

"naw" not " no" Blush

334bu · 09/08/2020 13:11

Can I ask what is troll hunting and why is it not acceptable on this board?
By the way my favourite phrase is " Gaunnae no!!"

DianasLasso · 09/08/2020 12:24

Bunbury appears to have dropped off the front page. Which I think is in need of more Bunbury. So I am bumping dear Germaine.
