Bunbury's guide to community disruptors part 5

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember our monitors would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3691023-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-4

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

Go well Witches Gin

Gosh, I wonder what was wrong with the Hachette thread? I didn't get to see the later posts.

Either posters there were being mean or the monitors are out in force and the moderators are being very compliant to do their bidding.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 18/08/2020 12:50

Or 🍆

Obvs

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 18/08/2020 12:24

I've avoided mention of carrots, as I'm concerned that "don't be a smart arse about carrots" has gone into the rulz whilst i've been typing

No you can’t do carrots

No taking the piss out of anything that is longer than it is wide...very freudian

BovaryX · 18/08/2020 12:17

Hi,
I haven't seen several posters for a while. I hope TheRealMcKenna and ProdigalKitten and Michelle are around?

FWR is a no go zone for...

irreverence
sarcasm
humour
depreciation (of anything except women/woman/female)
recipes
repeating accepted mantras
peaking
acronyms beginning with A
piss taking (see humour I guess?)
biscuit emoji
yawns

*observations of our oppression
*recounting our stories (if they make some people look bad)
*mods, mod’ding, FWR talk guidelines

We must be more...

depreciative (of self)
serious
subservient
supporting
supplicant
polite
measured
self censoring
space saving
speak less, learn more
meek
mild
accomodating
accomplished (in areas proscribed)
*forgetful
*mindful

How about a thread?: We might be ok with this? My delusional life as a potato. Locked up in solitary on a mushroom farm, with only a radish in charge of my agricultural well being . A hypothetically true story (caveat:NARALT)

p.s. I've avoided mention of carrots, as I'm concerned that "don't be a smart arse about carrots" has gone into the rulz whilst i've been typing.

Take it easy out there.Flowers

@Mollscroll

What the hell? Just got deleted again for the third time. None of my deletions have been for anything that is expressly banned in the Talk Guidelines. Or were not banned at the time of my post. Maybe I'm out of here...
Some FACTS are inconvenient doncha know Wink

I'm sure there are hurt feelings whenever discussion arises from specific real-life events, but so what? Silencing the affected women is not a neutral act.

SocialMedea · 18/08/2020 11:35

I'd just like to say FFS too.

As predicted Grin

Mens hurty feelz take priority at all times

TedsFederationRep · 18/08/2020 11:18

Another thing to add to list of ‘Things not to be talked about’.

Quite. The list seems exhaustive. And exhausting.

highame · 18/08/2020 11:14

Unfortunately, there's seems to be a lot of activity. I know this is 'touching nerves' but it is likely to get worse. MN has a very wide audience and this is a threat and therefore any way to disrupt is being used. Hey Ho

Thank you to all of you who posted personal stories Flowers

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 18/08/2020 11:10

Mind you, this was at the same time as moderators agreed that the phrase ‘Take a long walk off a short pier’ was a death threat

Oh yeah 😀 i should have been sniggering a lot earlier 🤔

Fucking ridiculous, and what sort of person do you have to be to report on that basis ? 😀

Actually i know the answer to that one....but deletions, strikes, banning etc

So we can add talking about women and girls’ experiences of mental health wards and how they perceive, and would like, their actual treatment to be to the list of things we can’t talk about.

Early last year I talked about how, in my dd’s case, her gender dysphoria was caused by severe OCD - that thread was deleted. It had been extrapolated that talking about our own experience implied all transgender people are mentally ill. Mind you, this was at the same time as moderators agreed that the phrase ‘Take a long walk off a short pier’ was a death threat.

It’s all very oppressive.

Cocothefirst · 18/08/2020 09:46

Interesting to see the comments on the online meeting were being deleted as they came up. Women’s words or feelings are discounted in favour of the man. Women were asking valid questions that were never answered, including those with experience of the mental health settings.

wellbehavedwomen · 17/08/2020 22:03

@DianasLasso

I will confine myself to saying what a shame it is that we have lost so many fascinating and heart-rending first person testimonies about the difficulties of being a sexual abuse survivor, the mental trauma this can cause, and the difficulties of healing from this trauma within patriarchal institutions which set up institutional structures which favour men's rights over women's needs for a safe therapeutic envoironment in which to heal.

Flowers to all those who shared their stories. I read them, I felt for you, and I learned from you.

This.

The fact some people are desperate to silence and obliterate those posts speaks volumes on quite how moving, and important, they were.

TheFleegleHasLanded · 17/08/2020 21:35

The deletion of both those threads is very disturbing, especially given the heartfelt posts from women who had a very valid perspective on mental health services.
Standing for women on Facebook has a link to photographs in the public domain that are also disturbing.

Mollscroll · 17/08/2020 20:51

At this point Twitter are less heavy handed with their deletions policy than MNHQ. Deleting women for talking about their experiences on mental health wards - not their finest hour.
