Excluding trans women from women's single sex spaces is discriminatory - Human Rights Watch

Extract from letter to PM:

" ... We are particularly concerned by media reports suggesting that the government plans to exclude trans women from women-only spaces. This would be a seriously regressive and discriminatory step. The government’s own 2018 consultation on the GRA states clearly that “trans and non-binary people are members of our society and should be treated with respect.” However, this proposal would force trans women to use male facilities, despite strong evidence that this puts them at risk of violence. Conversely, there is no evidence that allowing trans women access to women-designated spaces, which has been the case for a number of years, puts other women at risk.

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health, an interdisciplinary professional association comprised of over 700 members worldwide, has found that medical and other barriers to gender recognition for transgender individuals, including diagnostic requirements, “may harm physical and mental health.”

In line with international human rights standards and medical best practice, Human Rights Watch recommends that the government reform the GRA to allow for a transparent, accessible administrative process for legal gender recognition based on self-identification. We urge you to reject any policies that would subject trans women to discrimination and expose them to harm, in particular by denying them access to safe spaces for women. ... "

ie trans women have human rights - biological women dont, which seems to mean biological women dont have human rights or maybe dont even qualify as human!!

"Human Rights Watch" have no more legal standing than the local Balloon Providers Association

Lollipop ladies have more LEGAL standing (God bless their life saving hearts)

Allowing trans-identifying men into women's spaces “may harm physical and mental health" of women. But HuMAN Rights Watch doesn't give a shit about women.

Why is George Soros so keen on eliminating women's rights?

ThePurported · 20/06/2020 00:33

I know stumbled.
Fgs, this is an org whose 'line of business' is investigations and fact-checking.
And now they are saying that anyone who says they are a woman, is a woman?

Excluding Transwomen from women’s single sex spaces is discriminatory

Of course it is! That is the whole point of single sex spaces - to discriminate against people of the opposite sex!

spottedelk · 20/06/2020 00:03

Didn't someone on here do a list of the known cases of transwomen attacking women in single sex spaces? How are these organisations getting away with pretending that there have been no cases?

stumbledin · 20/06/2020 00:00

ThePurported - I suspect that their followers will think it makes at the cutting edge of Human Rights.

But what is worrying is that many people ie lazy journalists will just report this as fact ie that a Human Rights groups says it is a breach of human rights to exclude trans women from women's single sex space.

That's the topsy turvy world of the over arching trans training so many groups and organisations have gone through.

Sorry, NG Monitor, I mean.

wellbehavedwomen · 19/06/2020 23:57

In fairness, NGO Watch is itself based in Israel and regarded as being right wing, and hugely Israel-oriented. Clearly - clearly! - I think they're talking bollocks here, but that isn't an unbiased assessment of HRW, either. I seem to remember they did good work in other areas. It's indicative of how far regulatory capture has gone.

Sadly, this is an easy win. It's a 'marginalised community' yet, unusually, all the costs are to women. So men can loudly defend the interests of this group, and feel virtuous, without cost. They can scorn women pointing out that actually, consent is a real thing that really does exist, and nobody asked us. And in the States, nobody on the left seems to push back. The other side is simply unheard. So people's views on this are formed by one side. As was intended, when silencing ours.

ThePurported · 19/06/2020 23:54

What a mind-blowingly stupid move.

Have they not given any thought to what this does to their credibility and that of the broader human rights movement?

From ngo monitor

Human Rights Watch is a powerful NGO, with a massive budget, close links to Western governments, and significant influence in international institutions. Its publications reflect the absence of professional standards, research methodologies, and military and legal expertise, as well as a deep-seated ideological bias against Israel.

wellbehavedwomen · 19/06/2020 23:46

This is what is so ridiculous: gender identity is a belief about an inner state of mind. By definition, you don't take your gender identity into a single sex space, any more than you take your nationality or your IQ or your religion. You take your body.

Single sex spaces are spaces where female bodies can be free from male bodies, because male bodies pose a hugely greater risk - 50 times more risk - to females than females do to males. Trans has nothing to do with it because trans doesn't alter biological sex, and gender identity is both invisible, and no safeguard.

It's the stupidity of it that gets me. How can people swallow this nonsense? That you can take your male body into female spaces, but if you believe you're Tinkerbell your body turns into something else? All we can see are bodies. Women are trained from earliest girlhood to be anxious around strange men, and for good reason. Where is the concern for our wellbeing, and mental health, with this?

Datun · 19/06/2020 23:45

Still, keep it coming. All these men who are demanding that the government allows them to access to vulnerable women is proving the point over, and over.

Datun · 19/06/2020 23:43

Males will attack transwomen in male spaces, but males won't attack women in women's? Because???

They can't even hear themselves.

What kind of out of out misogynist truly thinks that males should have the right to be present when women are disrobing, on the toilet, or in a rape refuge?

Aesopfable · 19/06/2020 23:40

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health, an interdisciplinary professional association

It is an interest/lobby group not a professional association.

nauticant · 19/06/2020 23:39

Right, I've been a bit lazy but I'm definitely going to write to my Tory MP on Monday to express my support of the change in government policy over this. The core of my email will be that allowing self-ID would inevitably result in a conflict with existing women's rights. I'll also mention the 4000% increase in girls seeking a trans identity. I have reason to believe this will particularly attract my MP's attention.

I'll be requesting a meeting (online or otherwise) too.

TehBewilderness · 19/06/2020 23:38

“trans and non-binary people are members of our society and should be treated with respect.”

"Some people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” & some use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”... They say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”

There is not now nor has ever been a law that gave transwomen unfettered access to women and girls in various states of undress, nor the right to displace women an girls in the public sphere.
Many men took liberties with the laws and threatened women into silence.
Those were not rights. They were abuses.
