Be an ally to lesbians: stop using LGBTQ+

I'm a lesbian and I mentally parted company with Stonewall and began opposing it and a lot of other LGB organisations when they added the T and then the Q and then all the other identity letters to the original LGB.

LGB people are united by same-sex attraction. TQ and whatever are linked by their insistence on identity — defining themselves by feelings or whatever. LGB people are united by their experience of homophobia. Transgenderism, and its attack on sex, is inherently homophobic. The two cannot and could never exist comfortably together. As soon as Stonewall added the T to their constituency, it began working against its core community.

Stonewall and other organisations have done this by force. Uncoupling the LGB from the TQ+ is one of the most important things anyone with a GC stance can do.

Please, let us work towards making the letters LGBTQ+ a badge of ignorance and shame, not something that employers should be plastering everywhere as proof of how progressive they are.

It's like you've never heard of the cotton ceiling..

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 19/06/2020 13:02

Would you now be kind enough to address my points/questions? I repeat them here:

But, saying that same thing in a similar group (for trans or queer theory people) would be very contentious indeed.

Are you saying that you (and all your lesbian pals) have no idea that this is the case?

Seriously?

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 19/06/2020 13:00

Of course I agree.

Out of interest why did you ask me those questions?

7ofNine · 19/06/2020 13:00

I saw a poster when I was driving (a proper paid for advert on a bus shelter) that appeared to be from Pride and had the words Intersex in huge letters on it.
I couldn't read it as I was driving, but since when has intersex been a sexual orientation?
It is a biological condition.
Ditto asexuality- that's not a sexual orientation.

LGB only for me.
And I think purple had it right earlier today, at 9:42.

I find the attempts to normalise fetishes insidious.

VickyEadieofThigh · 19/06/2020 12:46

Those screenshots aren't "anti trans" they are statements of disagreement with a strange ideology. An ideology which states as fact that people can change sex. Without any evidence.

Why does disagreement = "anti"? Is this newspeak?

In a world where a woman stating her objection to being called a "menstruator", or saying that males can't be lesbians, or that women's groups should be allowed to exclude males - are all considered "anti-trans", refusing to go along with the ideology is bound to attract the accusation.

SapphosRock · 19/06/2020 12:44

BaronessBrighterThanYou There are no circumstances where it would be controversial for a lesbian to state she does not sleep with males. That is what being a lesbian means.

Out of interest, do you agree with the following statements?

‘You do not have to like men. You do not have to date men or have sex with men.’

‘You should not have to do anything without consent.’

‘You should never feel pressure to have sex with somebody’

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 19/06/2020 12:41

I disagree but then I'm neither trans or queer.

Lost you there sappho - what do you disagree with?

SapphosRock · 19/06/2020 12:32

Shedbuilder what criteria would you set for a lesbian group then?. Obviously no trans women. How about trans men? Bi women? Non binary females attracted to other females? What about people like me, adult human females exclusively attracted to other adult human females but also proud to be part of the LGBTQ family. Would we be allowed in?

If it's lesbian only group then must all members be gold star lesbians? If so would a past encounter with a male count again them? What if it was just the once? What is there was no PIV involved?

I concede that you would be hard pushed to find a Facebook group with 5,000 pure gold star lesbians who want to disassociate from the LGBTQ community and have never made sexual contact with a male. As lovely as that would be.

TheChampagneGalop · 19/06/2020 12:29

Be kind

Ughhhh...

Shedbuilder · 19/06/2020 12:15

Sappho's Rock and been kind enough to PM me with details of the 5,000 strong lesbian FB group she's involved with. If it had been a deeply-hidden group run by lesbian volunteers I would have honoured Sappho's Rock's desire to keep it quiet. But it's not.

It's a group set up by the UK's main 'lesbian' magazine — although it hasn't really been a lesbian magazine for years. It's associated with Linda Riley, close friend of Ruth Hunt, Edward Lord and a lot of other familiar Londonfaces. Linda's a full-on trans ally. Do you know what the first rule for group members is? Be kind.

SerenityNowwwww I believe it was 2004 with the passing of the Gender Recognition Act.

SerenityNowwwww · 19/06/2020 12:07

So they don’t believe in gender = sex.

When did we decide that your mind = your biology?

SapphosRock · 19/06/2020 12:04

@BaronessBrighterThanYou are you having a laugh? Most of the LGB Alliance mission statements are explicitly anti trans. Everything in these screen shots is anti trans.

A LGB organisation that didn't centre trans issues would be incredibly refreshing.

TheChampagneGalop · 19/06/2020 12:02

The rainbow flag and Pride make me uneasy now because they're used by homophobes, you don't know if someone is an actual LGB ally if they use it or support things like transing lesbian tomboys instead.

FirstClassFlightHome · 19/06/2020 11:46

I reject the rainbow symbol as I feel it only represents trans people now. BUT that makes me feel MORE protective of lesbians. I feel lesbians are being marginalised and I want to reach out and show support.

This is the shittest ever time to be a lesbian. And my mum was a lesbian in the 1960s. Now is worse.

SapphosRock · 19/06/2020 11:38

BaronessBrighterThanYou I disagree but then I'm neither trans or queer. I wouldn't try and infiltrate a group for trans people and I appreciate it when they don't infiltrate lesbian groups.

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 19/06/2020 11:35

I actually really wanted to be on board with the LGB alliance. If it was purely pro LGB it would be a great organisation (and a good alternative to Stonewall) but being explicitly anti trans puts me off. Being anti trans is still centering trans issues, even if it's done negatively.

Quote something, just one thing that they've said that is "explicitly anti trans", please.

Kit19 · 19/06/2020 11:29

its funny, in the charity world people often talk about how great it would be if their charity was no longer needed because it had achieved its purpose

stonewall shows that that is just BS, charities hardly ever voluntarily go out of business if they've achieved their objectives. the charity commission should be stronger on that but then they should be stronger on a lot of things...

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 19/06/2020 11:27

I can confirm that a lesbian saying she does not having sex with males would not be a controversial thing to say in the lesbian Facebook group.

But, saying that same thing in a similar group (for trans or queer theory people) would be very contentious indeed.

Are you saying that you (and all your lesbian pals) have no idea that this is the case?

Seriously?

EmpressLangClegSpartacus · 19/06/2020 11:26

That's unfair. I'm trying to show solidarity with lesbians who feel pushed out by the trans agenda. I don't think I'm comimg across as preaching to people about how lesbians feel.

And I appreciate it, LittleCabbage. Thank you.

Shedbuilder · 19/06/2020 11:22

It was the fact that Stonewall had been so successful and had run out of things to achieve for LGB people (marriage, equal employment rights and all ticked off the to-do list) that left the organisation with a void that it needed to fill if it wasn't to fold. Ruth Hunt filled the funding hole with T. And then when it all began to look a bit iffy, she resigned and her political cronies made her a peer of the realm.

I think perhaps what a lot of people fail to appreciate is that Stonewall was effectively done when the incredibly effective Ben Summerskill stepped down (and wasn't ennobled, and probably needs to be acknowledged much more for what he achieved). Ben understood the issues with the T lobby. He has a lesbian sister.

I'm bi and I agree with you. The TQ+ shouldn't be tacked on to the LGB because they are very different things and the TQ+ are now acting like a cuckoo, pushing out the original eggs from the host family and demanding to be fed and fed.

LillianBland · 19/06/2020 11:11

TLDR

Women being allies to male bodied people who identify as lesbians = good.

Women being allies to lesbian women = bad!
