Just getting it out there that transactivists in Ireland have been making threats to any woman who has wanted to discuss the effect self-id is having on women's rights in Ireland. If anyone Irish is reading, you need to be aware. If you support these people, you need to know what you're supporting, and if not, you need to be aware of the threats that are being made. One of these people works for TENI and has spoken at a National Council for Women in Ireland conference.

Hi, late to the game here but just been lurking over the last few weeks and have had my eyes opened and am particularly interested in the Irish perspective. The JKR pile-on got me started and I've been digging and reading ever since. There is a wealth of information from this board, its amazing. I'm in Ireland and feel that self id was introduced here without letting anyone know. There is no talk about it in media and I would guess that most of my female friends would not agree that we want women and girls sharing single sex spaces if they realised that 80% (if that's an accurate figure?) of trans women haven't physically transitioned. I'd guess the majority of the general public doesn't know about this here. In addition, there doesn't seem to be sex based protection in our equality act, am I right? It's all gender. What's that all about? I got that from ihrec.ie and also citizens information. What can we do in this country? Should we write to TD's (which ones?). I also checked the national women's council website which state "by‘woman’ we refer to any person who identifies as a woman". I presume they have to because of the self id law. Is there any point writing to NWCI to share my concerns, or to a TD (if so, which one?), or is it too late and protection based on sex is gone. I'd love to hear from any Irish people who have been here longer than me to get your thoughts on it. Even in real life there is rarely any discussion on this although I will be trying!

@CumannNamBan

This was sent to an Irish woman on twitter.
This is unbelievable. It's a terribly frightening threat to this young woman. I hope all the woke intelligentsia in Ireland, who are sharing their latest hashtag #reawakenthefeminists along with their #TerfsOut hashtags and criticism of JK Rowling and anyone who supports her, are proud of themselves when they see the kind of people who use this Terfs Out terminlogy. @CumanNamBan, do we know that this young woman is safe? I mean, we must understand that when some whose name is Terfs Out talks about smashing someone's head in, they probably mean it metaphorically and even if they don't, it's justified if a transwoman thousands of miles away was murdered. And tis young woman, presumably in Ireland, should just get over herself if she feels scared by this, given that we've had a man sentenced for stomping on his pregnant girlfriend's head 17 times leaving her permamently unable to feed herself, a family sentenced for their cover up and dismemberment of a woman by her son in law, the samurai sword murder of another woman and the guilty verdict in the case of a man who systematically raped all of his daughters over many years. Yeah, metaphor's great. Tell this girl to just chill out. Nothing to see here.
CumannNamBan · 28/06/2020 20:30

I know! And she's only 19 as well.

7Days · 28/06/2020 20:24

That's frightening - that poor girl.

Ringsender2 · 28/06/2020 20:17

@CumannNamBan that's nice.

TheTamingOfTheresa · 28/06/2020 20:07

Fair play Tiggers.

Lovely to see people meet-up here.

JustJayne69 · 19/06/2020 10:32

That is a form of Fascism.

@Jellyeggs

I’m at a loss for words actually. That people are being tagged for daring to be friends with someone who dared to say “I am uncomfortable with this”.

What’s particularly disturbing is that these are people I campaigned side by side with to repeal the 8th and for same sex marriage. So disappointed that we cannot raise any concerns or questions about Gender politics without our jobs and social lives being threatened.

Excommunications, catholic Ireland went nowhere. I'm watching it unfolding too. It's pathetic, have they no self-reflection?
7Days · 18/06/2020 17:21

On the upside, a girl at work brought the whole thing up with me.
Wokey work. Shes only early 30's. But she gets it. Most people do.

PopcornAndWine · 18/06/2020 14:23

That's horrendous and very frightening.

Name changed for this post.
Just seen a Facebook friend has posted screenshots of EstelleBirdy’s posts, with the names of any of her friends whose acquaintances liked or shared the screenshots telling their friends to out them as “terfs” to all their mutual acquaintances. It’s absolutely horrifying.

7Days · 16/06/2020 10:35

That's very good of you Tiggers.

EstelleBirdy · 16/06/2020 01:48

@WhatTiggersDoBest this is a wonderful offer for anyone who might be feeling vulnerable. Thank you.

EstelleBirdy · 16/06/2020 01:46

@TinaTurnoff wow! That’s so cool. Such a small world and I’m so grateful that you’d come on here to say this. Thank you, I really appreciate it. That’s deadly that we worked on the magazine together. In all of this, what’s been amazing is the number of women who will flock to support other women, total strangers, when those women need it most. It’s been so heartening at a time that was very destabilising and frightening. I’ve had calls and messages and emails from countless women expressing solidarity, speaking of their concerns and their fears about speaking out about misogyny and threats of violence. They’re all scared and they became more scared when they saw what was happening to me for merely pointing out the frighteningly violent nature of the threats in two publicly available tweets. I was not the first to point these out, I saw others had shared them with the same abhorrence for their content. I just became the focus and when I refused to recant, they unleashed a torrent of harassment. It’s nothing compared to what other women have tolerated but I’m sure they’re not finished with me yet. I’m really so grateful to you and to all
the women on here who’ve got me through the last day. We can DM to have a chat about old times if you like? I’d love that. :)

TinaTurnoff · 16/06/2020 01:19

@EstelleBirdy I am so sorry for the attack you have experienced. You have great courage and conviction. I saw your name on a @Glinner tweet, and did a double-take as I actually remember you from secondary school; you were a year ahead of me. I am delighted to read you have a novel coming out. I think we were on a school magazine committee together.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 16/06/2020 01:06

I just wanted to add that if anyone on this thread in Eire (north or south) loses their job or home because they were brave enough to speak the truth, and needs a job or rental reference, PM me. I run my own business and can attest to your character.

EstelleBirdy · 16/06/2020 00:00

Ireland’s a great place. Don’t let this put you off.

Shedbuilder · 15/06/2020 21:38

EstelleBirdy, this is dreadful. I can't imagine what you must be going through. Is there anything those of us outside Ireland can do to help?

On a wider note, as a radical lesbian feminist who has been considering a move to Ireland, I thank you for some of the information here. Lots of food for thought.

NotCursedE reveals h** sex by instructing people to endanger children. With a few notable exceptions, harming children is a male crime.

VictoriaLucas102

Some great comments on that.No most people don't know they extent of what trans activists are doing and how they are threatening women.

CumannNamBan

Goes without saying but screen shot everything.Hope you have some support.
One of the people who was threatening women in has now protected their tweets.I wonder why?

CumannNamBan · 15/06/2020 19:51

I'm being targetted now as well for posting about that person who was threatening women. It is heresy now to speak out against male violence. I won't post more detail for now.

PopcornAndWine · 15/06/2020 19:35

What pearls of wisdom has Aoife Martin contributed? Actually I probably don't want to know...
