Anyone fancy challenging her over a "Hermione is probably a Terf' 'joke' in her new Netflix show, 'Douglas'? I believe she's on Twitter. No doubt EW's legal team are already on it for entirely different legal reasons.

She immediately justified it by saying she was "punching up". Wtf Shock

I switched off straight afterwards so no idea if she was actually setting up a meta joke about how we shouldn't throw dangerous labels at each other. I doubt it though. Really disappointing as I thought her previous show, Nanette, was really good. I guess it's gone to her head and she doesn't need educated (GCSE Science) women anymore. Sad

Do we think she's genuinely ignorant of the way the word is used, or is she lashing out at other women for some reason?

If it's any consolation, I think about one person gave her a pity laugh.

I feel betrayed.

I watched this with my dd when she was very unwell and in the throes of a cross-sex identification, and I could have wept with happiness at at being able to sit together and hear/watch a woman - a butch lesbian woman, with experience of mental health issues and autism - be a role model for the self-acceptance I hoped my dd would be able to experience one day.

I feel like Gadsby just took that and burned it up.

Sadder than I can say to see this. I felt every word of Nanette. After all she'd been through, and when she seemed to have found a comfortable place, it's a tragedy to find her derailed like this.

It's funny how we let women off the hook for not displaying 'an instinctive empathy' for other women....

Melia100 · 13/06/2020 23:26

Yeah, she's drunk the Kool Aid.

I really loved her previous show. She was out and proud as butch, and talked about pushing back on people who told her she must be trans. Now she's with a trans or non-binary partner, can't remember which, and revelling in letting out the internalized misogyny.

AsTreesWalking · 13/06/2020 23:20

Who? Never heard of her. Moving on.

DonkeySkin · 13/06/2020 23:17

I don't think it's a good tactic to 'challenge' celebrities on social media about trans issues. Realistically it's only going to have one outcome, which is a public declaration on the part of the celeb of fealty to all things gender, and/or their eternal hatred of 'terfs', often followed by a link to donate to Mermaids. It never leads to proper dialogue, and only intensifies the polarisation around this issue.

As the JK furore demonstrates, almost no actors/singers/writers are prepared to publicly question the gender identity juggernaut. It would be career suicide for most of them to do so, and certainly would be for someone like Gadsby whose main audience comes from the woke left.

It is disappointing to see that she's joined the Rowling pile on, but not unexpected. As a person who has been severely bullied for not conforming to sex roles (in Nanette, she talks about the discrimination and violence she suffered in Tasmania as a butch lesbian), she probably has an instinctive sympathy with people who identify as trans, and of course endorsing the current orthodoxy brings approval and rewards, questioning it would result in nothing but ferocious abuse and ostracisation. Leave her to her posturing, I say.

I'm not on Twitter but i found that tweet and saw the absolute pasting it received. Almost no-one was impressed. Quite the opposite.

Are all these young and not so young stars actually being paid to help erode women's rights? Because i can't think why else anyone would deliberately alienate their core audience?

There must be sooo much money flying around that we don't know about: retailers, comedians, actors, they're queueing up to throw away their credibility and make themselves look terrible in the eyes of most people. Confused

SadUtterly hypocritical given she became a global star by talking about a man violently assaulting her. With women like this, who needs the patriarchy?
