Buck Angel

it's a bit disappointing that none of the Scottish literary luvvies- Val McDermid, Ian Rankine or Sandy McCall-Smith have said anything.

They are all what Douglas Murray calls the untouchables. Even if they never sold another book they will be rich to the end of their days. I doubt their target demographic cares very much one way or the other about trans issues.

DidoLamenting · 12/06/2020 16:37

Julia Hartley- Brewer
Craig Potter
Blaire White.

I’m thinking that silence means quite a lot at the moment. I wonder how many PMs she has had from colleagues and others from her social circle.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 12/06/2020 16:31

Fern Britton? I'm so glad, I love her!

Hopefully this list will grow over the next few days, big names often have no more guts than we mere mortals do especially when you consider how toxic the likely response will be. And there's safety in numbers > watches patiently

StandWithYou · 12/06/2020 16:25

I think it’s significant that a lot of heavyweight columnists and writers are writing on this subject because they are using logical arguments which beat vapid tweets hands down - Suzanne Moore, James Kirkup, Douglas Murray and Janice Turner and leaders in the Times. Can’t wait for Janice Turner’s comment this weekend. Plus the comments in the Times by readers are overwhelmingly supportive.

I hope JKR is off Twitter and not reading any of this but I think this is showing how outrageous the whole thing is to many, many more people.

merrymouse · 12/06/2020 16:22

I love Robert Webb and others on this list, but he's no Daniel Radcliff in terms of profile.

If its just a question of getting the most high profile celebs, its just a tribal war.

Robert Webb has demonstrated his intelligence and has written extensively about gender stereotypes. I value his opinion more.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 12/06/2020 16:17

Oh come on, a lot of people supporting her are no where near as high profile as the people who are happily throwing her to the wolves. I love Robert Webb and others on this list, but he's no Daniel Radcliff in terms of profile. let's be honest here.

I think jonathan Ross and David Baddiel are pretty high profile tbh. Unless you mean they are not hollywood stars?

James Dreyfus.

Iv mentioned him on another thread the other day too.

JellySlice · 12/06/2020 16:12

Puhlease, its great these people have supported her but it is SHOCKING that no one with a profile of any real meaning has stepped up.

Oh, you mean someone young.

Maybe these celebs (and they are celebs by virtue of what they have done, not famous for being famous) are all of an age to have had some life experience. Maybe they've managed to grow up a bit and develop somewhat more mature attitudes than mere outrage and the infantile inability to look at things from other perspectives.

@sadandlonely2020

More a list who's that than who's who.
Sorry, but what do you mean by that. Are you a teenager? I assume you’re very very young, if you think they’re not famous? Or is it because they’re not instagram ‘stars’?
ShiveringCoyote · 12/06/2020 16:01

Whilst they may not be the most popular names they are intelligent educated names with life experiences.

Helmetbymidnight · 12/06/2020 15:57

I've got a real thing about Aidan Comerford. You know when people say someone makes their skin crawl - its that. He just gives me the heebie jeebies something chronic.

I think there's a LOT of support for JKR out there, I've been quite impressed.

Lissa Evans who wrote 'Their finest hour and a half' is it? is gc and she's a wonderful writer.

What bigger names would you like - and are they on social media?

Collidascope · 12/06/2020 15:57

Thank you for posting the link to Helen Lewis's newsletter, merrymouse. It was a very good read.

WinterIsGone · 12/06/2020 15:50

Absolutely every time this makes the news, I think surely this time some of the bigger names will step in. And every time, they don't. There's maybe one new person (generally middle aged) who dip a toe in the water by retweeting, say. Then silence.

I would have thought someone like JKR would be the tipping point, when more people stood up to be counted. But no. Sad

Here's a Twitter thread from someone I'd not heard of dissing GC people, but he does helpfully list them...

Iamanaubergine · 12/06/2020 15:46

Andi Oliver (chef) - not sure she agrees with Jk but has at least tweeted support

ChickenonaMug · 12/06/2020 15:34

Abs yesterday Fern retweeted Frances Barber who wrote that JKR is an extraordinary women. The tweet contained a link to JKR’s piece.

Lottapianos · 12/06/2020 15:33

'It's SICKENING. I really hope that she is just ignoring all of this and getting on with her life.'

It is sickening, utterly stomach turning. Misogyny seems to know no bounds. After this week, I wouldn't blame her if she wanted to disappear from public life forever

RoyalCorgi · 12/06/2020 15:32

Muriel Gray.

Toomuchtea · 12/06/2020 15:28

Frances Barber is obviously pro JKR.

HandsOffMyRights · 12/06/2020 15:28

Has Ricky Gervais said anything?

Rightmovenewbie · 12/06/2020 15:27

I’m wondering why piers hasn’t said anything yet.

merrymouse · 12/06/2020 15:27

Helen Lewis is avoiding twitter at the moment, but this is her newsletter:

YgritteSnow · 12/06/2020 15:25

I agree @BlingLoving I am thoroughly depressed by the lack of support for her. It's frightening really that it has embedded itself so deeply that no one dares speak up.
