Emma Watson has now tweeted in support of trans activists. I can't believe it.

OP posts:
MrGHardy · 11/06/2020 11:13

"She is obviously a highly intelligent woman"

Define intelligence? If you are unable to or even unwilling to critically think, you're not intelligent in my book.

Ahe posted a bunch about the black curriculum and educating herself. She can see her white privilege, but not her wealth privilege - she will never be in a jail with a Karen White, she is no sportswoman so will never lose to a male, she will never go into a bathroom and have a man in a dress there creeping on her, she will never lie in hospital ward and share that with a male.

Finally, "why wouldn't you include", I'm sorry what? Yes Emma, why wouldn't you? Why don't you start including the homeless in your home, the poor in your salary? Inclusive is nothing more than a buzzword used to erode boundaries.

from every study I can find, the majority of trans women are attracted to men

Going back a bit in the thread, @CloudyVanilla, but I feel I should point out to you that you seem to have been misled about this particular point.

The vast majority of men who transition late in life are heterosexual, and they have often been married to women and fathered children

I wanted to add to this. Even if were true that most transwomen are attracted to men, what difference does that make? They're still men.
By that logic, it would be fine to allow gay men into women only spaces. After all, they aren't attracted to women either.

But its really not ok. (And gay men are not asking for this)
Ask yourself why.

BlingLoving · 11/06/2020 11:03

Lots of really good points on this thread.

Cloudy - I was you a few years ago. But then I "woke up". Here are some examples:

  • I realised that the aggressive, violent, abusive stuff was always from those "supporting" trans rights and it is always aimed at those who were asking about how to protect women's rights. I've yet to see someone who doesn't agree with TWAW throw the violent, sexualised, aggressive language (or actions) at transactivists (see current abuse being received by JKR. I have not seen this type of abuse thrown at EW or DR).
  • I realised that it's not just about single spaces. It's about lots of places where women are disadvantaged if suddenly trans woman (or self ID'd women) are included. Women/Girls sport. Women's lists (look it up - the number of self ID as women - ie men - who win "women of the year" or who are appointed to roles that are designated for women etc is really quite disturbing. I have no audited stats to prove this but I am confident that the percentage of TW who are in these roles is significantly higher as a percentage than the number of TW there are vs natal women)
  • Women have to completely change and adapt everything we know and think about ourselves, and society is being asked to completely change and adapt processes designed for us, because of TW. For example, doctors surgeries are being told that they are discriminating when registration firms ask if you're male or female. Even though, of all places, this BIOLOGICAL reality is essential for medical care. At its simplest, being male or female impacts whether you are routinely offered checks for cervical vs prostrate cancer. The change being demanded by trans activists would, at best, make the process of ensuring correct biological medical care is received is more complicated. At worst, women would drop through the cracks an no longer receive this care routinely because the forms would not capture the right information.
  • I have been shocked at how lesbians are being attacked. A lesbian who says she does not want to have sex with a trans women because that trans women has a penis find herself the target of astonishing abuse. In itself, this is an issue for me. But then I take it a step further because the misogyny becomes even more clear when you realise that we don't see heterosexual men who say they wouldn't want to have sex with a woman who has a penis receiving the same abuse. Why is that? What the actual fuck is going on here?
  • I read about young children being given puberty blockers and surgery which has massive long term effects and it is astonishing to me. In my day, young women who wanted breast reduction surgery for massive breasts were told they had to be at least 18, preferably older, before it was doable as it was considered harmful to do this kind of thing while a girl was still growing. On what planet can we think it's okay to make this level of medical intervention for a condition which, by any definition, is ultimately a mental health one?
  • The relaxing of rules about what is acceptable in schools is just weird. I'd like to think that my 9 year old is a nice boy, respectful etc. But he has started noticing changes in his own body and in girls. For both his protection and the girls, he needs to start being separated from the girls when using bathrooms/changing etc. I see schools who are saying this is not needed and I just don't get it.

I'm sorry, this is long. But I just wanted to show all the multiple ways that TWAW just brings all kinds of difficulties that people want to ignore and shouldn't. It's not about being anti-trans. It's about saying that we have to consider whether their right to being safe and comfortable should be done in such a way that it removes the same right for others.

@FFSFFSFFS

How do we respect everyone’s rights to feel safe in society?

Well - one way would be to focus on stopping male violence - which is the problem.

If there wasn't male violence there wouldn't be a problem would there. And yet somehow this doesn't seem to be a focus of discussion...

YES.

This is the point. Who stands to gain from deflecting attention from male violence and towards trans people? MEN MEN MEN MEN MEN.

All of these issues stop when society refuses to tolerate male violence.

FamilyOfAliens · 11/06/2020 10:42

@merrymouse

UN Women’s Ambassador.

I don't think you will have much luck.

"Trans women are women at the end of the day. Every woman is a woman. Women are multifaceted, intergenerational, international. They are limitless, formless ... women are the world.”

They haven't the foggiest idea what a woman is.

Look outside - could be mist, could be a woman. Impossible to tell.

If only somebody had told Malala to use her female superpower and transform into a formless being while she was on that bus she could have saved herself so much trouble.

When someone posted about “UNWomen” upthread I thought it was a new group set up to dismantle the word “women” and redefine it to include, well, everyone who wants to be included.

And the fact that I wasn’t surprised that this could happen tells me all I need to know about where we’re at with this whole shitshow.

Ninkanink · 11/06/2020 10:37

Look into girl guides and the NSPCC (for a start) if you really want to be gobsmacked...

"Trans women are women at the end of the day. Every woman is a woman. Women are multifaceted, intergenerational, international. They are limitless, formless ... women are the world.”

What. The. Fuck?

I literally do wonder if whoever wrote that was actually on glue at the time? Women are formless? Yes, tell that to the girls who can't go to school because they have a vagina! I think they know plenty about their fucking 'form'. Jesus Christ on a bike.

And also... 'At the end of the day'? Really?!

Ninkanink · 11/06/2020 10:32

Yes, whilst grandly lecturing the rest of us about lofty principles.

I live by my principles every single day, Emma. What have you done in the real world?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 11/06/2020 10:27

Emma Watson believes in Emma Watson's career.

She will ally herself with whoever is more likely to promote that.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 11/06/2020 10:22
  • mogtheexcellent As a mother of an Emma who chose the name because of strong females with the name all I can say is thank fuck for baroness Emma Nicholson and dr Emma Hilton.*

Plenty of other Em’s/Emma’s to be inspired by too:

Emma of Normandy
Emmeline Pankhurst

Please look up Emmy Noether- her reasoning is the foundation of modern science.
Einstein owes much to her and he acknowledge this.

Plumpi · 11/06/2020 10:18

I’m sorely tempted to start a petition to have Emma Watson removed from her post as a UN Women’s Ambassador.

At least she's an actual woman. Better than when Wonder Woman was ambassador. That was a weird decision.

It absolutely is an act of spite.

Misogyny, male supremacy, unquestionably a predatory agenda.

Ifonlyus · 11/06/2020 10:06

So again in my naivety what is the solution? How do we respect everyone’s rights to feel safe in society

We all have the right to feel safe in society but I as a female, do not, in certain situations, places, times of day. I restrict my life, on an unconscious level, to mitigate some of the dangers posed by male violence. Single sex spaces are part of that mitigation. For us all to feel truly safe, violent men would need to be eradicated. So why don't we start there instead of taking away half the populations' safe(r) space. To open up single sex spaces to makes, makes them mixed sex and no safer for anyone. That sounds like an act of spite.

But isn't there a risk they'll then give it to some transwoman?

Please do.

Enderthedragon · 11/06/2020 09:58

I have watched the Emma Watson and Paris Lees interview. Yes, Paris does manage to make it about herself and trans rights. But also what struck me when Emma was talking about it was that she was really struggling for an actual argument as to why males should be allowed in female spaces. She was getting very emotional, couldn't find her words and kept saying 'it's just..... How can anyone not include people..... Oh my goodness' but nothing actually concrete. Its quite a strange watch that interview actually.

She is obviously a highly intelligent woman, but on this it does seem that she is so open minded that her brains have fallen out.

I'm still also reeling that she didn't say anything at all about the rape and death threats that have been directed at JKR. I guess anything other than full capitulation is just unacceptable, and a woman being threatened with rape is a small price to pay if you get adoration and validation from men. Interestingly she does still follow JKR on Twitter which I'm sure the TRAs will get angry about pretty soon.

I really hope Rupert doesn't get involved - I can imagine him at home being like 'fuck no, I'm not saying anything!'

mogtheexcellent · 11/06/2020 09:56

Emma Watson has been woke for ages so no surprise. I think the younger generation are a lost cause.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 11/06/2020 09:46

@merrymouse

they need to come up with a different solution that doesn’t increase the risk of adverse impact on women and girls, and stop making it our problem to solve.

The current proposed solution - allow all men into female spaces - doesn't address the problem they claim to be trying to solve. All it does is affirm the concept of gender identity.

Quite. Hence my use of “claim” and “where that happens” because there is so much evidence that for a sizeable vocal cohort, it’s about validation not personal safety.

(O/T but I finally found the quote button!)

BentBastard · 11/06/2020 09:43

Emma Watson not doubt thinks she would have been a Suffragette, when in fact she would have been holding them down as they had the tube forced up their nose.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 11/06/2020 09:40

people forget that Hermione is a creation of JKR not EW

Yep.

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2020 09:33

On the other hand Emma Watson works in an industry where it is very difficult to work while pregnant, female roles are limited and women are expected to quietly disappear once they hit 40.

Watson has 10 years in which she will start to find out what happens to women in Hollywood. I wonder how she will feel about the sexist agism in 15 years. Or if she has children in the interim.

I find it interesting she seems different to try and make her sexuality status look cool and trendy by doing this:

Watson is single, which she described in 2019 with the self-coined phrase "self-partnered".

I almost feel this is a statement of saying that she is trying to avoid sexual harassment and declaring she doesn't want child (at least anytime soon). Why do this? Would a man? We know they wouldn't. We know they wouldn't feel the need to. It's quite clear she has prioritised her career over relationships and is making a point of it.

Will she, in 15 years, be the one leading the charge about how women in Hollywood over a certain age are treated with contempt? Or will she be retired from public life having started her own family and having no need to ever work again? Or hire a surrogate to save her body or because her body is past its timeframe to reproduce? Or whether she will simply be happy to fade into irrelevance and oblivion? (I think we know which is the least likely option here)

Or just double down and carry on with her second career as a politician, following her own self interest rather than actually representing the needs of those she claims to represent?

The fact she always has this option is significant, and has a bearing on her views and what she is tweeting now. She can always change direction and come out the other side looking 'heroic' in someway. Unlike mere ordinary women all over the world.

OvaHere · 11/06/2020 09:31

I did know that EW was a HP actress, and kept seeing her name as a feminist spokesperson. I wondered what qualified her -- she's so young. Not that youth disqualifies anyone. It's what has she bloody done to make her a spokeswoman for women?

Rather ironically I think part of it is that the character of Hermione has long been seen as a feminist role model for young girls.

But people forget that Hermione is a creation of JKR not EW!
