Emma Watson has now tweeted in support of trans activists. I can't believe it.

OP posts:

Probably she's been very sheltered in many ways.

I also think she works in a very precarious industry where rule no. 1. for women is don't be difficult.

If you start talking about structural inequalities that only face women, you are giving people reasons to employ somebody else.

Much easier to pretend they don't exist.

Enderthedragon · 11/06/2020 14:21

I'm just having a rant and don't mean to go low, but as a woman who has lived with domestic violence, grown up poor, had to use a homeless shelter and been subjected to sexual assault, to have a rich and privileged woman with a platform have such a 'let them eat cake' attitude makes me feel genuinely sick. Young women are indeed judged by many as a group as being naive and dim, as a young woman I had to fight countless times to deal with such prejudice and make my voice heard, and she is doing nothing to help redress that with her vacuous virtue signalling and failure to address anything Rowling said. She is a women's ambassador FFS. Utter, utter shame on her.

You're not going low at all. Flowers I have no been subjected to DV or had to use a refuge and I feel your anger.

I do feel slightly sorry for EW, she wants to try and please everyone and she knows she has got loads of transgender followers who will turn their vitriol on to her the second she doesn't capitulate. She knows it, she has seen it happen with Joanne. You can see it in that video with Paris, there are no arguments there at all, its just all smiling sweetly and talking about how awful it is to exclude anyone at all.

She thinks that if she is just 'kind' to men then everything will just solve itself and we will all hold hands and sing, and Joanne will go round to Paris's for dinner and they'll get pissed on Prosecco and they'll laugh and talk about sex and exchange hilarious stories of being catcalled in the street and Joanne will tell Paris how 'fire' she looks in that dress and everyone can be included in everything.

Goosefoot · 11/06/2020 14:21

I'd really question whether people who are so young are the best choice for positions like UN ambassadors.

Goosefoot · 11/06/2020 14:20

30 year olds have been seen as closer to teens for a long time. Many groups that have a youth wing include people up to 30. There has been an upward creep to teenager-hood overall, maybe related to delayed parenthood, or longer educational periods. And we generally fetishise the young and their opinions, look at Brexit. There isn't a lot of social pressure to prompt younger people to look with respect at the ideas of their elders.

University education seems in many cases to make people less likely to question gender ideology. Sadly.

BatShite · 11/06/2020 14:17

Whats the crack with all the repliers waffling on about transwomen being women? IF ANYTHING, JK Rowlings tweet was about transmen. It should be transmen who are the focus of this.

This story has a hell of a reach, MIL who is normally ignorant on stuff like this has just appeared and asked if I knew what was going on with JK Rowling, she read it in the sun!

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2020 14:16

*shit hot.

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2020 14:16

And that's something a UN ambassador for women should be shit hit on. The silences and the unspoken. Not bandwagon jumping.

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2020 14:15

So telling, isn't it? A huge chunk of JK's piece was about the 4400% increase in girls wanting to transition. She mentioned autism and regret after transition. No one gives a shit about that though. I wonder why.

Indeed.

Always look for the silence and ask why there is silence where there should be comment. It often reveals more than what is said.

Collidascope · 11/06/2020 14:13

And again she tweets about transwomen, not transmen.

mummmy2017 · 11/06/2020 14:11

If all supporters of Trans are so supportive, how come when they wish to raise a family then they choose the oppersite sex to become the parent.
Be they in a same sex relationship or have a Trans partner to create the child a woman's body is needed and a male to provide the sperm.
Yet we have to now hide this view because it is upsetting for some.

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2020 14:11

Part of the thing about Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe in this debate is how they are seen as teenagers even though they are both now in their 30s. They are not regarded as the adults they are and they are used to appeal to a teenage audience.

This is relevant.

Meanwhile JKR is framed as a stupid old woman who is stupid, uneducated and knows nothing about life.

This is also relevant.

As is the background of both JKR and Radcliffe and Watson and how two of the three have always been extremely privileged whereas one has had to fight and work for theirs.

So who people are and why they say different things has to be part of the conversation, because the debate is a reflection about who is 'allowed' to speak and who is silenced (and who doesn't even have a platform).

merrymouse · 11/06/2020 14:10

And again she tweets about transwomen, not transmen.

BaronessFloralBunting · 11/06/2020 14:10

Yes, all the eager young actresses ready to stick the knife into JKR and receive their protective cover by saying the mantra are about to discover that this particular cult is rather exacting about compliance to the codes.

hypernormal · 11/06/2020 14:09

I also don't think we should be excusing her lack of being thorough in fact gathering and looking at different points of view. As a graduate of Brown University, and as a UN Women's ambassador, I see very little excuse for her vacuousness, we're not talking about the average teenage girl here, but a well-educated woman in a position of massive influence when it comes to women's rights.

Enderthedragon · 11/06/2020 14:07

Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny, has also tweeted about how transwomen are women, but got grief because she wrote 'transwomen' not 'trans women'. Still can't get it right Bonnie can ya?

hypernormal · 11/06/2020 14:05

BaronessFloralBunting · 11/06/2020 14:05

To be fair, I was writing anti-feminist polemic when I was 30. Actually arguing that women should not have the vote.

I will criticize her for her tone deaf response as a professing Feminist, but I won't judge her too harshly, even though it is women like her and me in my former life that maintain the oppression of all women. She likely just doesn't want sexualized threats by the thousand herself, and I can't blame her for that.

Radcliffe and Redmayne however, are part of the male privileged class, and can fecking do one.

Goosefoot · 11/06/2020 14:04

She 30 ffs, she’s no more a teenager than I am!

That's really not the point, people know their teen daughters have similar views and it has nothing to do with them throwing omen under the bus or being woman haters etc. This assumption that anyone who take that viewpoint has those kinds of motives is simply false.

many 30 year olds seem to think similarly, in any case, the line where more women are automatically skeptical seems to be closer to 35 or even 40. Watson is also unmarried, not a mother, and quite young in a lot of her ideas and opinions, from an upper middle class background. Probably she's been very sheltered in many ways.

I would have been surprised if she was GC.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 11/06/2020 13:59

Yes, Lordfrontpaw, she's 30.
I had lots of experience at that age, but was probably still in thrall to men. I suspect that I might have been on the side of "kind".

I agree Dances, it is treacherous. But I still refute anyone's right to attack her personally, to talk down to her, to tell her to "eat sh*t".

While we are making Emma a target, the people who actually deserve our ire are laughing away at the dissent they've stoked among women.

Emma Watson is not the problem.
Why do we expect her to get her response absolutely spot on?

For instance, what about the responses from the 4 male directors of the HP movies? (I havent looked, so they may have said something bang-on, but there's no thread about them on here).

nope, not going to collude with ganging up on one youngish woman caught up in this even though I completely disagree with her comment.

FamilyOfAliens · 11/06/2020 13:59

I mean, how many people here have teenage girls who are in a similar position?

She 30 ffs, she’s no more a teenager than I am!

Collidascope · 11/06/2020 13:59

I find it staggering that Emma Watson thought that her little soundbite was an appropriate response to the slayer of an essay that JK put out there. I'd understand more if she'd said what she said before JK spoke out properly, but coming after... Well, it felt either disrespectful or imbecilic. No attempt to engage with any of the arguments. No condemnation of the abuse. Just cultish wankery. "Trans people are who they say they are." I presume she accepts other people's estimations of themselves in all other circumstances too. Donald Trump? Definitely a very stable genius who can medical.

Goosefoot · 11/06/2020 13:56

I mean, how many people here have teenage girls who are in a similar position? They aren't misogynists, they are just young.

Goosefoot · 11/06/2020 13:54

I don't think young women, or for that matter young men, are thinking this way because they all are desperate for male approval or whatever.

Most of them really want to be fair, and they see this as fair. They don't have the insight to see the potential legal problems, the experience to see how it could be abused, and they also tend to think it is supported by reserch and medical evidence.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 11/06/2020 13:53

@EarlofEggMcMuffin

The personal attacks on her, leave it out please.

She is a young-ish woman, who is allowed to make mistakes like everyone else.

She is working in an industry that is white male dominated and no doubt, has to make compromises on that basis.
I do. I don't really dicuss this in real life, as it may have consequences for my work.

No cause is helped, by diminishing yourself to the level of the opposition. If they go low we go high.

I totally agree with leaving out the personal attacks on her as an actor or a person. We only demean ourselves by resorting to the same sort of personal attacks that the Koolaid Krew do.
Alyssum34456 · 11/06/2020 13:53

I agree Evanna did a much better job, but was really worried about coming across poorly (and you see the abuse she still got!) Emma could've done a lot more.
