Emma Watson has now tweeted in support of trans activists. I can't believe it.

OP posts:
WatchoutfortheROUS · 10/06/2020 23:59

So a UN ambassador for women doesn't actually believe in women then?

CloudyVanilla · 10/06/2020 23:59

The fact he was in a womens prison is a miscarriage justice. I have said time and time again that I agree that singlesex spaces and their preservation is a valid concern.

I am saying I feel sad that there is such vitriol towards trans women from some feminists and I do not agree with it. Do you seriously expect me to go against thos beliefs because you bring out as your example of a trans woman is a literal fucking rapist. Do you seriously think that is representative of the trans community? Do you honestly expect me, if you do think that, to not consider that extremely ttransphobic and see it a just another tired example of exactly what I was saying in my very first post on this thread?

CuppaZa · 10/06/2020 23:59

I always thought she was a raving idiot anyway.
Emma Watson, if this thread gets pulled by the Daily Fail and you read it, know this...you’re a fucking moron

RoosterPie · 10/06/2020 23:58

There are arseholes every colour of the rainbow on Twitter

There is a culture of abuse, threats of violence, pile ons, trying to get people cancelled etc by trans activists. The same is not true of feminists, unless you would like to show me examples of Emma Watson receiving the same level of abuse Jk Rowling is from those who disagree with their respective opinions.

colouringindoors · 10/06/2020 23:58

She posted this after JKR essay. Classy.
She is getting many challenges on her Mermaids donations. Good.

I do really feel for JK Rowling with Emma w, Daniel R, Eddie Redmayne and Evy all TWAW-ing.

FliesandPies · 10/06/2020 23:58

In a few more years no one will remember these has-beens. In a hundred years people will still be reading and enjoying Rowling's books.

EileenAlanna · 10/06/2020 23:57

@0v9c99f9g9d939d9f9g9h8h it's neither absurdity nor hysteria. These "celebs" occupy a rarified world where they no longer see or mix with any of the grossness the rest of us have to put up with, if they ever did. They don't have the Karen Whites or Jessica Yanivs of the world to deal with & I've no doubt they'd be singing a different tune if they did. It's entirely right & proper to expect, even demand, that they "lead by example" & give up their places & their rights to any passing trans who wants them.

underneaththeash · 10/06/2020 23:57

I disagree with her, but people are allowed to have different opinions.

Pepperwort · 10/06/2020 23:57

The trouble is that those people exist CloudyVanilla. These are the people who are taking refuge under the trans umbrella. These are the ones who are vocally asserting their "rights" against women.
How these holier-than-thou types can see the level of abuse - sexual abuse - this attracts, and still claim that trans activism and ideology is not dangerous to women is beyond me.

Lifeinthelastlane · 10/06/2020 23:56

Cloudy you make literally no sense. An example of a rapist who has identified as a woman and been placed in a woman's prison where he assaulted more women is an obvious example to use to demonstrate the danger of self id, and that predatory males will, well, predate.

PamDenick · 10/06/2020 23:55

It’s absolutely outrageous that neither EW or DR have tweeted against the rape threats JKR has received for stating that women have periods.

BringbackLang · 10/06/2020 23:55

None of them have defended her. They've stabbed her in the back.

Also none of them have said anything about transmen either, the people most likely to have periods.

No they have centred Transwomen in something nothing to do with TW.

CloudyVanilla · 10/06/2020 23:55

There's literally no point supporting something with a twitter post. There are arseholes every colour of the rainbow on Twitter. Of course some people are extreme. There are some extremely toxic feminist and MRA posters on twitter too, it doesn't anyone can or should just all women or all men by those standards.

Is there any point in carrying on this discussion? Bringing up extreme examples of rapsists and twitter crack pots to refute my point that trans women are actual people deserving of sympathy and acceptance too, while also acknowledging that wanting single biological sex spaces is a PERFECTLY VALID expectation just seems like petty point scoring.

OldCrone · 10/06/2020 23:54

@OldCrone I don't understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying because he's manly looking he wouldn't, as a transgender person, be at risk of being subject to trans phobic abuse?

He's a rapist who was put in a women's prison. How vulnerable do you think he was there? And how vulnerable do you think the women he sexually assaulted there were? And do you realise you've committed literal violence by misgendering this delicate specimen of womanhood?

You honestly remind me of this MRA I spoke to once who, when I was arguing that women were vulnerable to male violence, he described a "6 foot lesbian woman" as some kind of trump card to say that it somehow meant women weren't vulnerable.

Confused
TehBewilderness · 10/06/2020 23:54

@CloudyVanilla

Right I get what everyone is saying but there is more to trans women than just the issue over same sex spaces. I know that's where the conflict is, I'm saying that apart from that, both groups can be supportive of each other. As in, support each other by no being so vitriolic towards each other.
It's at the rape and death threats in response to women speaking their opinion(4th rule of misogyny) that we draw the line, Cloudy, but thanks for the effort at bothsiderism.
backseatcookers · 10/06/2020 23:53

Yeah, you’re right the actors are entitled to state that they disagree with Rowling.

However none of them have asked for the TRAs to stop abusing her. And in Radcliffe’s case, he had the audacity to apologise if JKR’s comments ruined people’s enjoyment of the books he had no hand in writing. It is not his place to do that and it is grossly insulting.

You know what would have been really brave for these good young allies trans people to do? To state, simply: “JKR is entitled to her own opinion. I don’t Happen to agree with her on this issue. But I think the abuse she is getting for her views is utterly unacceptable.”

This. This this this.

OnABeachSomewhere · 10/06/2020 23:52

There's popularity to be had from jumping on the woke bandwagon. Doesn't make it correct or helpful though.

backseatcookers · 10/06/2020 23:52

I think it's disingenuous to treat tans women the exact same as men.

Disingenuous to treat trans women the exact same as men...

But not disingenuous to treat trans women the exact same as women?

Or in fact to prioritise their rights over women's rights?

Radcliffe, Lynch, Watson all owe their careers to Rowling, and certainly the contents of their bank accounts. I think the one I am most disappointed in overall is Lynch, because JK helped her out a lot. They are complete cowards.

RedToothBrush · 10/06/2020 23:49

What is so striking is the eloquent well thought out essay (which makes a point of the lack of this on twitter) versus a vapid and vacuous 280 tweet from someone who clearly hasn't read the essay (cos if she had, it wouldn't be so ironic that the tweet was illustrating the lack of nuance and thoughtfulness on twitter).

CloudyVanilla · 10/06/2020 23:48

Okay but seriously, it is obtuse in the extreme to post a picture of a literal rapist as your chosen example of a transwoman"

To the poster asking about whether I think the overall threat of men toward women is low, of course not. I think it's disingenuous to treat tans women the exact same as men. Not least because from every study I can find, the majority of trans women are attracted to men and the number of trans women to non trans men is obviously small.

RoosterPie · 10/06/2020 23:47

I disagree with her, and am astonished she supports Mermaids, but in as much as JK Rowling is entitled to an opinion so is Emma Watson. I have less of an issue with her saying this as a woman than I do Daniel Radcliffe as a man apologising for JK Rowling.

However her failure to condemn the threats of sexual violence against JK Rowling is unforgivable.

OldCrone · 10/06/2020 23:47

They're not vitriolic

So why haven't they condemned the abuse she's received? Do they agree with it?

More examples of vitriol here:

Emma Watson no longer believes in women
Ninkanink · 10/06/2020 23:45

No, single sex spaces are not single sex if any man who says that he is in fact a woman is automatically entitled to be in them. It’s not hard to understand.

Women and girls are entitled to their biological sex and protections afforded to them by virtue of it.

Any brand of feminism that is all about the men is not feminism.

Read the above thread for further discussion.

CloudyVanilla · 10/06/2020 23:44

Sorry to spam. @Clymene I've already said I agree with JKR for the most part, or at least the statement I read. If you're sick to the back teeth of discussing it maybe don't reply or just reply to the responses you agree with? Seems a bit weird to come to a discussion saying you're sick of discussing something Confused
