Emma Watson has now tweeted in support of trans activists. I can't believe it.

Sorry, the final film is one I shouldn't have included. Even though the nastier bits are obscured it is still incredibly disturbing.

Maybe just take my word for it that there is a long history going back to the countercultural hippy era of a merging of "edgy" (abusive) models of psychotherapy and personal development, theatres, circuses (basically nomadic entertainers), and abusive cults.

Circuses and travelling theatres have always occupied a liminal space and people can run away with them and disappear into them. Their nomadic lifestyles offer freedoms but may also entrap the vulnerable, if the company involved develops cultic dynamics.

Of course not all acting / theatrical schools are cults, are operated by cults or have cultic elements. However the cultic elements are much more widespread than people realise.

Back to Emma Watson. She may have had an excellent training in acting unrelated to cults. I really don't know. Her yoga and meditation practice may be nourishing and healthy and her interest in Buddhism may be unrelated to any Buddhist cults.

I just wanted to say that, via her professionand interests, she falls into a number of categories that make her vulnerable being offered copious amounts of kool aid.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 15/06/2020 19:02

transactivism is to actually being trans what terrorism is to religion.

Wow, yes. Absolutely.

I don't know if I can bring myself to watch those films, hooda. Sad

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 15/06/2020 17:37

Ugh, hoodathunkit - those videos are properly disturbing. And in that first Muehl one, no one stands up for that poor child - that's worse than the abuse in some ways, he's alone and has no support, and he knows it. Poor kid :(

Ugh.

Thanks for the links, hoodathunkit. It seems like the main purpose of the creative arts today - theatre and contemporary art especially - is to constantly push to break down people's (women's) boundaries and preach queer theory.

I don't think that it is the main purpose of the creative arts, however there is a significant problem with the infiltration of the arts by people pushing queer theory and cults.

I also think that the nature of acting and theatre is all about creating alternative realities and this is why people who are involved in cults, long cons and social engineering are also involved in theatre and acting.

All con men and women are good actors. They have to be to pretend to be people's friends while scamming them. Many would argue that long cons are a form of interactive / participatory theatre in which the only member of the audience is the "mark".

I was at an arts event once, and a fully naked man suddenly appeared, masturbating. This was a 'performance' in the schedule of the evening. Although this was a fairly avant garde event, there were no warnings whatsoever throughout the night that this was going to happen, and I was mocked for being prudish by a few other (male) attendees for walking out of the room when this started to happen. I've been to similar 'performances' including S&M practices that were also not featuring any kind of warnings other than for nudity. I'm not in the least bit bothered about nudity or the arts being experimental and non-traditional, but performances, particularly ones involving men exposing themselves and committing sexual acts without warning in my book constitute sexual assault, yet anyone objecting is mocked as being ignorant and out-of-touch for not wanting to applaud. It's got to the point where it doesn't feel that the arts are about art any more at all, in fact, but are a propaganda machine for queer theory. I feel bad for any creatives caught up in this who want to make art but are critical of the agendas that are being pushed.

I have been in many similar situations. FWIW I think that there is space for transgressive, edgy theatre. Like you I'm not keen on being exposed to the transgressive aspects without warning or consent.

Anyone interested in the subversive / revolutionary and cultic elements of theatre might wish to research the Vienese Actionist movement.

This was a fairly small, obscure, yet deeply influential movement that spawned "performance art", initially known as "actions".

This movement had many very disturbing, cultic elements.

Possibly the most disturbing related to the artist Otto Muehl (pronounced mule) who created a personality cult around himself and set up a hippy commune centered around theatre, performance art and the sexual abuse of his followers including children.

Some disturbing videos for anyone interested in how hippy communes centered around theatre and performance art can become abusive, perverse entities.

Here Muehl forces a distressed child to perform on stage

shocking interview with Muehl in which he boasts of being a "sex champion" and of being attended to in the most disgusting manner by 14 year old girls

Muehl's films are too shocking (and possibly illegal) to link to here, however this is a "reaction" video in which intersted readers can see the reaction of a youtuber who is watching Muehl's videos for the first time and includes a description of the activities in the video (no explicit imagery but truly disgusting descriptions so NSFW)

Muehl was jailed for sexual crimes against children but now lives as a free man and is promoted as an important artist in many quarters.

Glad I don’t live near your local theatre.

They’ve used used Daniel weasel too. They are bananas. How can they stand up down women/girls around the world - let’s face it, females have it a million times worse in countries where they are mutilated for aborted/killed at birth because they are female. If they are so busy working to make everyone one accept their definition of ‘woman’ then they aren’t fit for purpose.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 15/06/2020 11:00

Sorry if it's been mentioned elsewhere but the UN Women twitter account have quoted Emma's words in a little pink and blue picture and are getting their arses handed to them in the comments Grin

They also ran into problems in Copenhagen, Denmark

They were awarded a huge grant from the local authority to develop a community yoga centre.

Trouble is they used the yoga centre to make porn films staring various yoga yeachers

this news report in not in English language but is still worth watching

a couple of old videos about the Romanian yoga school with its own theatre and dance companies, a puppet theatre and various porn businesses

"Not difficult to imagine how people can be exploited in a profession where you are encouraged to ‘be vulnerable’."

This is an important point

Acting is a profession where incredible wealth, fame and success is granted to a tiny minority while the majority struggle in obscurity. Gatekeepers hold immense power to help or ruin and issues of consent and complicity are nuanced.

Acting is a profession where an actor may starve themselves, deprive themself of sleep, expose themselves to traumatising and / or stressful experiences, all as part of their job.

A director may conduct themselves in such a way as to leave an actor terrified and distressed so as to get a realistic performance out of them. This will happen surrounded by a crowd of people all who say nothing and may even applaud at the end of the shoot if the actor "delivers" the required performance.

Actors are invited to find characters within themselves and to become other people.

Cults actively target actors and people in the entertainment industry.

Theatres and acting schools have a long history of being controlled by hostile state actors. Theatre has played a part in propaganda, revolutions, riots and social and civil unrest since time immemorial and theatre groups have been banned in some territories at various times for this reason.

Various community theatre groups are promoting "tantra", polyamory, swinging, sex cults and the usual stuff

Here's just an example including puppet - puppets pop up in some interesting places

Of course a centrally important point, right now, is how theatre and theatrical skills are playing a part on fake news and social engineering.

The Romanian yoga school I mentioned in a previous post here boasts a large theatre group which performed in the following event to celebrate their pimp guru's 50th birthday. Many of the actors in the video also star in pornograhic films made by a variety of companies linked to the yoga school.

WARNING - this is an extremely disturbing video with nudity NSFW

video of theatrical performance starts at 1.10

Ah, that's nice. I think that shows what is becoming increasingly clear: that transactivism is to actually being trans what terrorism is to religion.

Lordfrontpaw · 14/06/2020 20:27

Here’s a blast from the past (on twitter). It appears that it’s the kiddies that haven’t learned biology...

“Dear J.K. Rowling, I send you love and kisses from Israel,” [Dana] International wrote on her Instagram account after Rowling tweeted: “If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased.”

merrymouse · 14/06/2020 14:49

There are a number of very notorious cults associated with acting and theatre.

Doesn’t surprise me.

Not difficult to imagine how people can be exploited in a profession where you are encouraged to ‘be vulnerable’.

No problem
Always happy to help if I can and I do make a lot of typos
:)

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 14/06/2020 14:16

Well well! Another new lesson. I hadn't heard of that either! Thank you for the link - of course I could have googled it myself but I just wanted to check first that it wasn't a typo. :)

hoodathunkit · 14/06/2020 14:09

I can totally imagine acting processes and techniques to be infused with some cultish thinkin, providing opportunities to manipulate very open and imaginative young women and men.

There are a number of very notorious cults associated with acting and theatre.

For example this flashmob was organised by a notorious Romanian yoga cult that has several theatre groups, a puppet theatre and a history of involvement with pornography

There are also many examples of therapists with an involvement in community / revolutionary theatre going on to become abusive cult leaders Derek Gale is one of the best known

Then there are the cultic elements in dramatherapy

Bit pushed for time but will post more soon :)

hoodathunkit · 14/06/2020 14:04

Really interesting post, hoodathunkit - stuff I'd never heard before!

Now I have to ask you - in this comment "The real history and development of what people now call "yoga" is fascinating to anyone interested in astroturfing, entryism and cultural appropriation.", do you mean something other than fake grass by astroturfing? Or is it a spectacular typo? Thanks :)

hoodathunkit · 14/06/2020 11:37

Do you have any links you could share about the cultish elements of these? I know a few actors, including those who use clowning, and am intrigued.

Pushed for time, but would like to answer your question

Re the clowning, of course just because a person is involved in clowning does not necessarily mean that they are involved in a cult.

The wonderful film Rize showed how a dance form related to a new type of clowning could be liberating for oppressed people and could help to empower them.

Re the performing arts there are many examples I could give.

I am working on a little project about this at the moment and will post a link as soon as I can

hoodathunkit · 14/06/2020 11:32

I have to take issues with this. THESE are no reason to be woke -- quite the opposite!
It is actually when I started Yoga at the tender age of 19 that I finally began to find a way out, a refuge.

You may find yoga helful but surely you must be aware of the many yoga cults that abuse women?

Just for a very basic intro into some of the problems you can check this thread

forum.culteducation.com/read.php?12,108666,page=1

Meditation (I don't know anything about "mindfulness meditation", I think it's just a commercialised fad) authentic meditation, as it is supposed to be taught, would actually wake her up entirely if she did it properly.

Well that's the claim. "Wake up!". Unfortunately much of the awakenings, activations, downloads etc. seem to leave people in a reverie of feelgood wokeness that adversely affects their abiity to assess risk and take avoidant action.

I do not have a problem with mediation. I meditate every day. I have a problem with the crass appropriation, comercialisation and perversion of mediatation by corporations and cults.

The very foundation of the spiritual aspect of Yoga is to abandon fake identities and find an inner strength and balance as well as independence from outer influences.

Yet is it exactly this promotion of the "authentic" "inner self" that has been appropriated by identity politics and perverted into Orewellian groupthink.

What are the "fake identities"? What is the "authentic self"? Do we have mutiple identities? Personally I believe that all of us have nuanced selves / identities and I find the idea of retaining an "authentic self" and ridding onesself of "inauthentic selves" to be deeply problematic for a range of complex reasons I am busy writing about.

I was a Yoga teacher right up until my second child was born, when I was 40. It's a fantastic practice and I've said before here, if I were a young mother and my child demonstrated a risk of turning trans, I'd immediately whisk him-her off to an authentic Yoga retreat.

Can you provide some examples of "authentic yoga retreats"? Serious question.

Nothing in my life has kept me so strong and mentally healthy and independent as much as my practice -- over 45 years now.

I have no idea about your personal practice. I can believe that it helped you to feel better. Yoga can make people feel really good and "awakened". I have decades of yoga practice myself. The main reason I stopped was the infiltration of yoga circles by misogynist cults, some involved in sex trafficking.

Unfortunately most of the people involved in yoga cults have no idea that they are in a cult until it is too late and it is hard to leave.

Some others know about child sexual abuse and misogyny within their yoga school but just crack on with their activities anyway, as has happened with Yoga Nidra, a trance inducing for of yoga which some proponents refer to a "cunt empowerment yoga" or "womb yoga" but is more widely known as the "yoga of sleep".

This thread is, I think, enlightening
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/yoga/3385527-Yoga-Nidra-I-love-it

The promoters of Yoga Nidra are right now rebranding themselves as activists against sexual abuses within the yoga movement. I have seen this happen many times before with cultic abuses and will be keeping a close eye on their activities.

I'm really sad that young enthusiastic but ignorant people have so tarnished the actual benefits of Yoga so as to relegate it into the realms of woo.

I think you have to ask, what is yoga?

Thre is an ancient tradition of yoga but this is a mile away from the modern postures or "asanas" most of which arose from a fairly recent cross fertilisation of western stretching exercises, (mostly informed by "Primitive Gymnastics" developed by the controversial Danish figure Niels Bukh) with Hindu spiritual practices.

Herein lies the problem. People embrace something generally known as "yoga" but the asanans, the cornerstone of most people's practice, are nothing to do with the ancient practice of yoga.

<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200614101755/jfdeters.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/the-myth-of-yoga/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">web.archive.org/web/20200614101755/jfdeters.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/the-myth-of-yoga/

<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200614102453/www.yogajournal.com/yoga-101/yoga-s-greater-truth" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">web.archive.org/web/20200614102453/www.yogajournal.com/yoga-101/yoga-s-greater-truth

The real history and development of what people now call "yoga" is fascinating to anyone interested in astroturfing, entryism and cultural appropriation.

Some yoga ashrams and groups have been accusing westerners of cultual appropriation of yoga, however while there are undoubtably ancient yoga traditions they bear little resembance to what we know of yoga today.

We are in a strange world in which cults routinely appropriate all manner of valid, authentic traditions and pervert them, but they also claim that their own novel, inauthentic practices are ancient and appropriated by others. It is a strange form of cultural appropriation DARVO.

I didn't know EW was into all this, but if it just means her practice is as shallow as it comes.

I would be genuinely intersted by what you would classify as "deep" or "authentic" practice. I really am very genuinely interested.

merrymouse · 13/06/2020 08:38

Responding in the interests of the celeb’s brand, which includes large numbers of people and products such as movies relying on his/her/their appeal to a certain demographic for their livelihoods.

I agree, and also EW and DR are very much trying to promote their brand to a US audience.

However, even if somebody else wrote the tweets/announcements, it's still very odd to approve them, given all the circumstances.
