Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So if Netflix and HBO also removed anything sexist or misogynist, what would that look like?

What would the streaming services need to remove? There would be nothing left!

I'll start: all of James Bond up till about 10 years ago.

Pretty Woman (obviously)

All the older Disney princess movies

Gosh when you think about it there wouldn't be much left to watch on tv. But it would never happen. And that says it all. How depressing.

I am a victim of domestic abuse and I find that there is very little I can watch on TV. There is just many drama where abuse of women is used as a form of entertainment.

I am basically down to cooking programs. I joke that tv should come with a trigger warning for misogyny but there would be nothing on.

Aw, Nigel ☹️

True. isabellerossignol Gardner’s world and the late Nigel the dog it is.

I watched Groundhog Day recently with my teens, and there's a bit in it where he is pressuring the female TV producer to have sex, and it was really uncomfortable watching.

Hot Girls Wanted.
The first one is a sensitive look at "amateur porn" that is heartbreaking. The second taps more into the "happy hooker" ideology with a horrific scene with a woman who is being injured during sex scenes and is encouraged not to symptom because filming has commenced. It's roundly hailed as brilliant because it's "porn made by a woman".

Cos it's obviously not coercion if it's by a woman...

stillathing · 10/06/2020 21:01

I've been thinking much the same.

Wtfdidwedo · 10/06/2020 20:58

Ru Paul. Not sure why blackface is unacceptable and the shit they say in the drag community is fine.

Redyellowpink · 10/06/2020 20:56

I actually find it frightening how many 'happy hooker' shows there are on Netflix

IcedPurple · 10/06/2020 20:54

The Fall.

isabellerossignol · 10/06/2020 20:43

They might be able to show gardening programmes?

But not Ground Force. Because of the way Charlie Dimmock was objectified all those years ago.

RJnomore1 · 10/06/2020 20:41

I was thinking this earlier
Add in everything where men dress as women and there goes a load more.

ChelseaCat · 10/06/2020 20:41

Friends would be straight off!

Annasgirl · 10/06/2020 20:41

And really any movie from the past - I watched some old movies recently that I used to watch as a child with my mum (they were favourites from when she was a child / teen) with Doris Day / Audrey Hepburn etc - wow, none of them ave aged well. It really is staggering.

Annasgirl · 10/06/2020 20:39

Oh I reckon most of what they show, but there was one new show I started watching a couple of weeks ago and had to stop pithing 5 minutes it was so anti women and creepy - Retribution I think it was called.

But of course, no one ever condemned misogyny or sexism with the same level of commitment as condemning racism.

And of course, Game of Thrones or porn on Sky as I liked to call it.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 10/06/2020 20:37

God, yes, Grease! Listening to some of the songs with DD and I was slightly horrified - Summer Loving 'Did she put up a fight?'

Top gear, and similar programmes

isabellerossignol · 10/06/2020 20:35

Actually, those probably aren't on Netflix.

But you know what I mean.

isabellerossignol · 10/06/2020 20:34

Pretty much any romcom.

Grease. Dirty Dancing.
