Yes, it is a no-brainer. I tie my brain in knots trying to understand how it has taken such a hold.
A day or so back I read a horrific account of Yazidi girls being burnt to death in cages because they had refused to become sex slaves. Then some twaddle by a young woman about being non-binary. I cried with sadness and frustration, that our world and culture are destroying girls, and yet there are young women happily going along with this.

What an incredible piece. Just fantastic. Thank you so much, JK. Flowers

RummidgeGeneral · 10/06/2020 22:15

Thank you JKR you awesome woman for speaking out.

Sadly I dare not be counted on social media due to uber woke workplace.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 10/06/2020 22:14

I'm quietly optimistic about Emma Watson. She's a clever girl. Afaik the only thing she has done prior to this is sport a "trans rights are human rights" t-shirt. Nothing incorrect with that statement.

WhoKnew19 · 10/06/2020 22:13

Bloody brilliant piece of writing from her, absolutely everything I would ever want to say but wouldn't be able to find the words. Thank goodness for JK Rowling!

dazzlinghaze · 10/06/2020 22:12

Absolutely amazing. She's put everything I've been thinking and feeling into words. I felt really emotional reading that! I've admired her since I was an 8 year old girl but now as a 26 year old woman that admiration is on another level. I'm so grateful to her for this.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 10/06/2020 22:12

She has been my heroine since 2002, when I first read Harry Potter. The voice of reason!

@ComDummings

Email her! I got a reply from her office within a couple of hours thanking me for the supportive message, so I’m hoping her team will let her know what she’s received a lot of support.
Can you share the email address please? PM?

Thank you@SirVixofVixHall and @OldCrone

I also think talk of how sex is "fluid" seems to miss the point. Even if that were true (and I haven't seen any science to suggest it is) people are not discriminated against because they have a brain that is a bit more "female".

Discrimination lies in the biology that we can see, not the biology we can't.

I may be being thick, but this all seems to be a no-brainer.

CheerfuIPotato · 10/06/2020 22:08

I’m tinging away on my triangle 💖

CaraDune · 10/06/2020 22:06

Someone suggested a whole orchestra of us in praise of JK Rowling. I'm currently sat at the back of the second violins, playing my heart out!

Flowers JK Rowling.

And it doesn't surprise me that she's done this. After all, she's the writer who brought us Dolores Umbridge, one of the most chilling portrayals of the evils of authoritarian politics in a format even children can get since Animal Farm (I personally think Umbridge is her greatest creation - forget Voldemort, Umbridge is the character that scares the willies out of me, because Umbridge is the one who's lurking out there in the real world).

ComDummings · 10/06/2020 22:03

That*

I have read her piece throughout tonight. It is a brilliant piece of writing. I don't see the need for her to tell all about her assaults as she doesn't need to have been hurt to understand others pain.

Years ago it seemed every perceived celebrity had been bullied at school. It became the thing to say. Then being assaulted became the thing to say or they were depressed or had anxiety.

I have experience of these things and fully think it is my issue as to why I feel uncomfortable with JKR telling the world now. It frustrates, confuses and upsets me that I feel this way. I can't make sense of it, I can't find the words to explain what I mean and feel. I just wonder if anyone can understand.

I wish I had a scintilla of her strength, ability with words (this especially frustrates as part of menopause I have lost it, and me a published writer) and hope this post makes sense to someone.

Flowers for all with pain.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/06/2020 22:01

thisoneday nope, that pretty much sums it up.
There is no critical argument, because the whole thing is based on falsities.

NotBadConsidering · 10/06/2020 21:57

Just amazing. Going to read the thread now.

TofuonToast · 10/06/2020 21:56

JK Rowling is the Emmeline Pankhurst of our time. We love you sister x

OldCrone · 10/06/2020 21:55

I have not seen anyone say "I understand JKR to be saying this, however I don't agree that sex based protection is necessary because Y".

It may be because I am new to this that I have not read around the issue sufficiently.

I've been here for years, and I've yet to see a reasoned argument from the people who call us transphobes. Their best argument to date has been to keep saying 'no debate' and say that anyone who disagrees with them is a bigot.

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/06/2020 21:52

If Emma Watson has one grain of sense at this point she will be very careful not to get drawn in to this or say anything about it and avoid the damage to her career that Radcliffe and Redmayne have just done.

OldCrone · 10/06/2020 21:50

[quote NotTerfNorCis]Twitter spin... "Many critics are calling the essay transphobic."

J.K. Rowling defends her controversial comments about transgender people

I've just had a look at some of the tweets on there. They really have no idea how GRCs work, reform of the GRA, or the fact that nearly all 'transwomen' still have a penis (and have no intention of getting rid of it).

This one for example.

"No debate" has been very effective at keeping the facts away from most people.

It's the number one trend on twitter and there is a huge amount of support for her.

What I really don't understand is the kpop fans. By adding to the tweets, they aren't drowning anyone out. They are promoting it and showing themselves to be silly children and drawing people to the reasoned and supportive tweets of so many. They only reinforce what JKR says. It's mindblowing that they think they are so clever.

thisoneday · 10/06/2020 21:47

I have read Twitter (I am very new to this whole debate) and the thing that frustrates me the most is the lack of reasoned argument from the TRAs.

I am a lawyer. Part of my job is to critically evaluate argument. You can only undermine an argument if you understand what it is. There is no point arguing with the statement "they sky is blue" by saying "the sky has clouds in it". You have to say "I understand X is saying the sky is blue, but it is in fact green for these reasons".

I see no evidence of anyone on the other side of this debate having understood what JKR and others are trying to say. It is either (a) saying that she is bullying transpeople, without any explanation of why or what her motivation might be (b) that she doesn't really know what she is saying. There is no acceptance that there might be any points of validity in what she has to say.

I have not seen anyone say "I understand JKR to be saying this, however I don't agree that sex based protection is necessary because Y".

It may be because I am new to this that I have not read around the issue sufficiently.

Enderthedragon · 10/06/2020 21:45

I don't know, I wondered if Emma and Joanne had had some conversations about this and that Emma had maybe started to think about things? After all, retweeting a link to a charity for trans people isn't really 'going against' what JKR said? I shall remain optimistic Smile

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 10/06/2020 21:45

Joanne Rowling is a magnificent woman. Knowing the abuse she would receive, she stood up for women and girls in such a well-considered and honest essay.

Her critics, of course, have seen her thoughtfulness and compassion and responded with respect.

Nah. Just kidding. It’s the usual mix of rape threats, ugly name calling and a fair bit of, “lalala not reading it and you shouldn’t either.” And then The Body Shop appeared.

It’s almost as if the TRAs have to respond with abuse because they have no coherent platform or actual facts to construct an argument with. I feel sorry for the trans people who just want to get on with life though - their community has gone batshit.
