it's important to also acknowledge the great battles that yet remain.

One of those is the current resurgence of transphobia in the UK, much of it fuelled by high-profile and prominent individuals with large social media followings.

People on both the right and left of the political spectrum in Scotland and the rest of the UK have taken to social media to denounce trans women in particular, suggesting trans women should not be allowed to use single-sex spaces.

Many misgender trans women, say that only women who were born female have the right to identify as female, and so on. Other slurs include referring to trans women as "men in dresses."

These "gender-critical" activists have taken aim at many leading LGBTQ charities and media organisations, including GLAAD, Stonewall, Pink News, and the UK charity Mermaids, which supports transgender young people. Even the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre has found itself in the firing line.

The author of this piece used to work for Buzzfeed. She specialises in posting disgusting lies on Twitter, such as that 'TERFs' would make 'revenge attacks' on trans people for 'TERFs' being attacked (which never happens, obviously), and excusing and minimising violence by transpeople.

Burn them Harry Potters. And burn Monty Python while you're about it for misgendering Loretta formerly known as Stan.

ShinyFootball · 05/06/2020 14:54

The idea that a group mainly made up of middle aged, leftie women are committing organised violent attacks on people is really interesting.

Who would believe that? People who are wholly disconnected from real life, essentially.

I'm 5ft2, mate. I'd need a ladder and some of that potion Getafix makes for Asterix.

This journalist is incredibly thin skinned, hates it when people point out Edinburgh Live lazily take most of their stories from the local subreddit. Haven't read the article but cannot abide her refusal to see more than one side.

Z0rr0 · 05/06/2020 14:38

Hilary is a lesbian, so this is doubly baffling.

SisyphusLangClegRocks · 05/06/2020 14:36

Meh - not even good enough to use as a chip wrapper

TheLashKingOfScotland · 05/06/2020 14:29

It's a website with a team of five. They have a Facebook page and the article has had a mixed but muted response. I don't think it's particularly influential and yy I agree the article seems pointed at JK Rowling.

Z0rr0 · 05/06/2020 14:28

'Why you will never find a gender critical article on Edinburgh Live'. So not actual journalism then. Grrr.

Shedbuilder · 05/06/2020 14:26

Yes, JK Rowling who used to live in Edinburgh and wrote the first HP in an Edinburgh coffee shop. They know what they're doing.

Z0rr0 · 05/06/2020 14:21

I assume this is pointedly aimed at JK Rowling.

'say that only women who were born female have the right to identify as female'

Being female is not a right it's a fact!

When did so many people accept the idea that being female, a girl, or a woman is like saying I'm a Goth or I'm a geek.

Do they genuinely feel that being female is a state of mind that is open to anyone? I mean REALLY believe it?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 05/06/2020 14:15

What is 'Edinburgh Live', is it a freesheet? I've never heard of it.

OhHolyJesus · 05/06/2020 13:58

What a balanced and in no way misogynistic piece of journalism.

^^sarcasm

Who do we complain to?
