it's important to also acknowledge the great battles that yet remain.

One of those is the current resurgence of transphobia in the UK, much of it fuelled by high-profile and prominent individuals with large social media followings.

People on both the right and left of the political spectrum in Scotland and the rest of the UK have taken to social media to denounce trans women in particular, suggesting trans women should not be allowed to use single-sex spaces.

Many misgender trans women, say that only women who were born female have the right to identify as female, and so on. Other slurs include referring to trans women as "men in dresses."

These "gender-critical" activists have taken aim at many leading LGBTQ charities and media organisations, including GLAAD, Stonewall, Pink News, and the UK charity Mermaids, which supports transgender young people. Even the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre has found itself in the firing line.

The author of this piece used to work for Buzzfeed. She specialises in posting disgusting lies on Twitter, such as that 'TERFs' would make 'revenge attacks' on trans people for 'TERFs' being attacked (which never happens, obviously), and excusing and minimising violence by transpeople.

I agree with you about the influence of having a trans family member.

ShinyFootball · 07/06/2020 13:50

There is a chap on there saying that single sex things have never existed...?

Including prisons :/

NonnyMouse1337 · 07/06/2020 12:26

Shedbuilder I've come across quite a few over 40 - I don't know them well though, it's through a wider social network. However, they are more likely to call themselves gay or queer, instead of lesbian. I suspect that plays a factor in their views. And also they might have family members who are trans and feel like they have to show support.

You are right though, that the vast majority of older lesbians are not into the whole TWAW thing and as you move towards the younger age range, the acceptance of trans ideology increases with women insisting it is gender that defines sexual orientation instead of, you know, actual sex!

Z0rr0 · 07/06/2020 11:24

That's brilliant @merrymouse

merrymouse · 07/06/2020 11:00

Many misgender trans women, say that only women who were born female have the right to identify as female, and so on.

Since when did anyone have the right to identify as anything?

I need sex based rights regardless of my identity. If I could just identify out of being female, I wouldn't need sex based rights.

Shedbuilder · 07/06/2020 10:44

Problem is, Nonnymouse, that I can't think of a single older lesbian who is TWAW. Hold on a moment. I can. There's one whose son has come out as trans and I suspect she's rather half-heartedly upholding trans ideology because he's her precious only child and she doesn't want to lose him.

Apart from her all the lesbian trans allies I know are under 40-ish. And the younger they are the more TWAW they tend to be. I don't want anyone here to think that there are loads of older lesbians who support TWAW because in my experience there aren't.

NonnyMouse1337 · 07/06/2020 00:36

Thanks, Ereshkigalangcleg. You've framed it better and in fewer words! Grin

NonnyMouse1337 · 07/06/2020 00:34

Hello Shedbuilder, I wasn't implying in my comment that older lesbians in general were fully supportive of trans ideology. I meant that whenever I come across an older lesbian who fully supports the TWAW stance, she is usually in a long-term relationship (with an actual woman, no surprises there...) and therefore has no skin in the game. She can afford to act like a big trans ally because she never has to deal with the consequences of it. She would never have to learn to tolerate a 'female penis' in her life, therefore she is able to sing its praises. It's the younger lesbians who are figuring out their sexuality that are being brainwashed and pressured into thinking they are transphobic for not wanting to date or have sex with trans women. It's younger lesbians having to deal with all the males on lesbian dating apps. It's younger lesbians being told by everyone around them that they need to be kind and accepting of trans women otherwise they are awful human beings.
The older lesbian who is adamant that TWAW knows deep down that she would never actually date or have sex with a trans woman, but is happy to pretend she is very evolved and happy to throw younger lesbians under the bus to prove it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/06/2020 00:21

Shedbuilder, Nonny was specifically referencing in her comment those particular older lesbians who are TRA allies, not all older lesbians, many of whom, as you rightly say, are radical feminists/GC.

Shedbuilder · 06/06/2020 23:21

I think all of the older lesbians I've come across who are full on TWAW are safely ensconced in long term relationships

I disagree strongly. I'm an older lesbian in a long-term relationship and I don't recognise this at all. In fact it seems to me that it's mainly older lesbians and older women generally, schooled in the feminism of the 70s and 80s, before feminists were supposed to be nice and kind and Gender Studies replaced Women's Studies, who've been at the GC coalface. Look at the women who started Woman's Place UK and you'll see older women. Look at the trans allies at Pride and most of them are younger, many of them students.

Us older ones have been warning the younger ones for years about the dangers trans ideology poses and have been laughed at and called dinosaurs and cold-shouldered by younger lesbians. Thank goodness, at last, a lot of them are beginning to get it.

Many of us have been fighting off trans presence at our events, club nights, in our bars and at our festivals for years — when lots of young lesbian women have been urging us to be kind and let their trans friends in.

WTF is this toady Helen 'Mimmymum' and wtf is she hanging out here simply to snitch to her TRA buddies? Sounds like someone in desperate need of friends and scraping the barrel to get them. Sad.

RedDogsBeg · 05/06/2020 22:12

See MN has been mentioned in that twitter feed, they just can't help themselves can they.

Jintyfer · 05/06/2020 16:25

What a rotten, one sided, bitchy piece of "journalism".

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/06/2020 16:21

I think all of the older lesbians I've come across who are full on TWAW are safely ensconced in long term relationships

My perception too. No worries about the cotton ceiling.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/06/2020 16:20

And it makes it such an uphill struggle, because not only are you fighting the TRAs but you're trying to push back against a wash of people with views but no skin in the game and that can range anywhere from the dreaded Aidan C or OJ to the nice trendy woke lefties like Hilary.

Yes, it's pretty exhausting. And it's all so stupid.

Z0rr0 · 05/06/2020 16:17

@NonnyMouse1337 The thought of that makes me so sad. Can people really not have enough empathy to imagine what the implications are for others?

Edinburgh Live started off fine, but they’ve grown and become a site full of utter shit, and it’s clear followers are turning their backs on them when you look at the comments.

During lockdown they’ve posted:

  • a “confession” from someone who had been breaking lockdown rules to have an affair, which was in reality a paid advert for a dating website and did nothing but incite thoughts that people could break lockdown rules *More recently, they posted how to get £15 off McDonalds, and then later an article on the ridiculous queues outside McDonalds Confused

It’s a shite rag, and if they thought they could compete against things like the local Evening News then wrong - they are as bad, if not worse

NonnyMouse1337 · 05/06/2020 15:26

@Z0rr0

Hilary is a lesbian, so this is doubly baffling.
I believe she is married so it's easier for lesbians like that to be trans allies. She knows she does not have to actually demonstrate the TWAW mantra in the bedroom. It doesn't affect her. I think all of the older lesbians I've come across who are full on TWAW are safely ensconced in long term relationships so know they will never have to deal with a 'female' penis in their love life. Many people find it easy to support issues when they know there's no direct effect on them.
OhBuggerandArse · 05/06/2020 15:12

And that men never ever ever do or say anything bad to our related to transwomen. Or transmen. Or gay men or lesbians or GNC people or women or girls or boys or other men.

It's an impressive record what with the terrible example of violent middle aged leftie women.

GenerateUsername · 05/06/2020 15:09

One thing that's always, or rather never, mind-boggling to me is that this so-called 'transphobia' is perpetrated by women against transwomen. You'd almost think that there were no transmen, or that their lives were easy and completely free of any issues, and that men never did any harm to anyone, anywhere Hmm

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 05/06/2020 15:04

Lots of reasons for them to hate the Pythons.

"He's not the savior, he's a very naughty boy"

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 05/06/2020 15:02

I wonder if she's just trying to drum up publicity for her publication tbh. Pick a contentious topic, subtly dogwhistle that it involves JK Rowling, sit back and then publicise any negativity whilst waving your TWAW pompoms.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 05/06/2020 15:01

btw 'GLAAD' is not even in the UK

It's a website with a team of five. They have a Facebook page and the article has had a mixed but muted response. I don't think it's particularly influential and yy I agree the article seems pointed at JK Rowling.

there are 'live' websites all over the UK. It's Mirror group's brand for their online local newspaper content.

They only have 60k likes for Edinburgh, so not huge. But, from a vast local news outlet it's a little inappropriate as an editorial position, even on a local level.

And yes, it's a direct attack on JK Rowling, of whom Mitchell has said 'transphobes have got increasing emboldened since that TERF jackass JK Rowling used her platform for hate speech' (this was in January)
