It took reading the Relationships forum on here for me to properly understand why a woman would not feel able to leave. I got my arse kicked hard on a different forum many years ago for asking a similar question in ignorance. Unless you have experienced DV or work with women who have experienced it, it is hard to understand how an abusive partner systematically destroys the woman’s confidence and support networks. I feel better informed now, but can understand how others might get it wrong.

Roseburn · 23/05/2020 20:58

The Baroness is the best thing that's happened for women's rights and girls' safety since, well... Martina and Sharon. Now it's going mainstream and she will have access to the ears and intrays of those who simply file ordinary women's concerns into the 'copy and paste answer' pile.
More power to your elbow Baroness. ( such a strong word too, 'Baroness.' There's Power in the Plosive!)

PinkBrained · 23/05/2020 17:41

When policing women who have a view on DV that isn't shared by others are we sure that they haven't experienced it themselves? I don't know anything about the Baronesses personal life, but neither do the people claiming she doesn't understand.

Onebigfoot · 23/05/2020 16:56

I don't expect to agree with her on every issue but watching women being silenced by TRAs is something I cannot accept. Look at their attempts to defund Mumsnet. So she has my full support.

Sexnotgender · 23/05/2020 14:12

Massive coincidence. Can’t possibly be anything but.

Does it seem a bit weird or coincidental, that when someone posts about a woman in the public eye, someone who is standing up for women's issues, that a poster turns up telling the rest of us how bad the woman is.

boatyardblues · 23/05/2020 13:45

Is it going to confuse the people already baffled as to how feminists can be willing to work with the Baroness even more if I confess to being an atheist who often finds religious architecture very beautiful? I don't have to agree with someone's religion to appreciate some of the things that faith has led them to create.

Same here, and I love the geometry in Islamic art and architecture.

nauticant · 23/05/2020 13:26

It's easy to resolve the "she's a victim blamer" charge. Let someone with relevant knowledge and experience explain to Nicholson the obstacles that exist over leaving an abusive partner. If you can get her to see the point and agree that difficulties exist, then we're all good.

Datun · 23/05/2020 13:09

I've had a quick skim of her timeline and she said the thing she said about leaving an abusive partner was flippant (or words to that effect), because she misinterpreted the message to her.

Sexnotgender · 23/05/2020 12:42

She was trying to get in touch with Daley Thompson.

littlbrowndog · 23/05/2020 12:36

She is a doer

Onebigfoot · 23/05/2020 12:33

I've seen today that's she has retweeted Daly Thompson saying that women's sport should be for women. It seems pretty self evident but I guess that is a bold statement these days

truthisarevolutionaryact · 22/05/2020 22:30

I've just noticed that she's commented this on twitter: but we are on a recovery mission of Women’s Rights

How very true.

Goosefoot · 22/05/2020 21:42

It's also quite possible for feminists to disagree about things, I'm never sure why people find that unexpected.

Some differences in viewpoint are more about personality, and some can be about what is seen as the best way forward, or maybe the only way forward from that person's perspective. Or their own particular experiences.

I am not aware of any ideology that has only one correct approach to important topics.

Bananabixfloof · 22/05/2020 20:58

If Donna B and others get involved, is there a prize for the person
who calls "House
Well I could send some money to the defundedVancouver rape relief?

If that's acceptable and it'll have to be when i get back to work cos furlough.

Mollyollydolly · 22/05/2020 20:54

I think she's amazing - the way she deals with the madness - her abrupt style makes me laugh. The TRA's are completely bemused by her.

She used to be on TV a lot years ago when she was an MP, I remember her well.

Her wiki page shows how much she's done for women around the globe. A woman of substance and achievement.

I really don't care whether she's a Conservative, a Lib Deb or Labour. She's right when she says it's about allies. Women working together.

I'm still a Labour member but I have no faith in them at all on this issue - not one of them is brave enough to stand up and be counted. Not one.

Lamahaha · 22/05/2020 20:42

And religious music.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 22/05/2020 20:25

Having had a quick look again at her timeline I'm seeing three main topics: gender critical views, astronomical marvels, and religious imagery and architecture. That's a definite winner for me.

Is it going to confuse the people already baffled as to how feminists can be willing to work with the Baroness even more if I confess to being an atheist who often finds religious architecture very beautiful? I don't have to agree with someone's religion to appreciate some of the things that faith has led them to create.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 22/05/2020 20:22

Also, what's happening with the Baroness and working with feminists is what the concept of "allies" in a political sense was supposed to mean, before TRAs and other pomo adherents redefined it to mean something more along the lines of "willing and enthusiastic servants".

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 22/05/2020 20:19

8I think when you read it all over the course of a few days it really seems like a massive scaling back of women's rights and rights to safety and it's quite overwhelming.*

Which is because that's exactly what it is, but we weren't meant to notice until it was too late to do anything about it, which is why most of the changes happened behind closed doors and conveniently out of the sight of the public, and one at a time.

OvaHere · 22/05/2020 20:05

We had a thread on MN the other week about why some people are 'doers' and what personality type those people are. It was interesting.

I know quite a few accomplished women I would describe as 'doers' and I would say the Baroness fits that too. Like the women I know in real life they can be a bit abrupt and not always as nuanced and sensitive towards others as might be ideal.

They do however get shit done!

WootMoggie · 22/05/2020 20:03

Our former friend is accusing the baroness of trying to be clever.

If Donna B and others get involved, is there a prize for the person who calls "House!!"

rogdmum · 22/05/2020 19:59

She is great I think. I do worry that she’s getting sent everything that’s been happening in the last year or so, she must be overwhelmed by it all. She is showing no signs of it to be fair!

While she might not have been aware of all specific instances recently highlighted to her (e.g. M&S changing rooms), she’s been well aware of the overall issues for some time and has quietly helped some of us in the background so I think she’s well placed to handle it.

MrsSnippyPants · 22/05/2020 19:44

Her Wikipedia entry doesn't even begin to do her justice. She has fought for the rights of women in girls in some of the most inhospitable places on the planet. Her work with the Yazidis alone is enough for me to have the most immense respect for her.

I don’t expect I’d agree with her position on everything, I’m another one who feels very let down by the left. I’ve been left of centre my whole adult life. The harsh reality that the right wing are the only ones standing up for women in this has been hard to deal with, but it has opened my eyes and made me a lot more nuanced in my politics. It has been good for me and helped me see that tribalism is not a positive force.
