Unmumsnetty hug Floral.

RubyViolet · 03/05/2020 18:52

I agree Floral. All of them need to get over themselves... all of them ! We are finally getting some traction. This is bigger than the self.

FloralBunting · 03/05/2020 18:15

I've been at work all day, and I've come home tired and stressed, and catching up with all this has honestly infuriated me.

In a week where we have leapt forward due to the hard work and commitment of this movement of women, making huge inroads in the legal aspects that have been so insidiously embedded over the past few years, actually managing to convince allies in influential government positions, and watching a 14 year old girl stand up to be counted, anonymous though she be, some women have decided this is the time to have a spat about who is better/nicer/more right/pure what the fuck ever.

I was elated a couple of days ago. But this shit is fucking ridiculous and I'm exhausted and angry. Are we all going stir crazy in lockdown or something? Fucksake.

MrsSnippyPants · 03/05/2020 18:15

Ha, and someone just sent me this tweet, which I hadn't seen before I posted.

At least Ruth Serwotka agrees with me Smile

Excellent observation @MrsSnippyPants. I didn't think of that, could well be a huge factor

OvaHere · 03/05/2020 18:12

There are a number of people who have helped shift the ground in this debate who aren't on the left and some of them men.

I don't really think this is a left/right issue to be honest and it's not especially helpful to see it that way.

Tobeortobe · 03/05/2020 18:10

Yeah you may well be on to something there MrsSnippyPants.

MrsSnippyPants · 03/05/2020 18:04

I'm sensing some displacement going on here.

I may be completely off the wall with this, but I think some feminists might just be a tiny bit angry that it may well be a Conservative government, via Liz Truss and some Conservative peers and MPs, who actually sort all this shit out.

I think that has shaken a few people, rocked their foundations in a way, because so much of their 'identity' is wrapped in '"Tories are all bastards and the left cares about people".

It has been hard enough for them to deal with the fact that the left has let them down, let women down in particular, but if the Tories now ride to the rescue of women and children's rights, reverse some of the institutional capture, well, that's going to cause a fair amount of cognitive dissonance.

DrLouiseJMoody · 03/05/2020 18:01

I am genuinely sad that she has been affected by school bullying to this extent, and (I really don't mean this unkindly), there is no shame in talking therapy to work through this sort of thing.

That said, such a situation is not - unfortunately - unique. I was bullied for pretty much the same reasons, and you can imagine how the deaf kid was treated. Her experience, as she tells it, is not especially worse than anyone else's, and does not justify naming myself and others (who have nothing to do with the pushback some have received for criticizing anonymous accounts), thereby risking replicating the very behaviour she has understandably found distressing in the past.

Bflatmajorsharp · 03/05/2020 17:44

I didn't read all the screen shots, but the whole piece read to me like someone who is mentally and emotionally shot away and really, really needs other people to understand why.

She's mentioned about her experiences of being bullied in the playground for being a 'weirdo' before - this has all obviously affected her at a very deep level.

She was also very clear that her opposition to PP is political, and why this is important to her. It's more complex than 'we all want the same thing' - the route that you take and who you travel with also matters.

Anyway, I hope that Jane gets some head space and rest and has a decent break from the toxicity.

DrLouiseJMoody · 03/05/2020 17:40

THANK YOU to those being supportive. It's not gone unnoticed 💛.

I haven't actually read JCJs entire thread (because 98 tweets struck me as excessive). I'm not overly impressed with what seems like a completely unprompted lashing out, no - I do not know JCJ and have only met her once. Neither do I understand the need to make public pronouncements about who you are (or aren't) politically aligned with. But it is her social media and what she says is obviously up to her.

For myself, I'll continue to work on my project, with my groups, and keep doing my thing. Things are beginning to materialise after months of chat and I'm happy about that.

Enjoy your weekend all.

Coyoacan · 03/05/2020 17:16

I found the screenshots enlightening and persuasive for the point of view that JCJ is arguing against, actually. So kudos to her for putting across the arguments of the people she disagrees with.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 03/05/2020 16:53

I've reread the JCJ thing but I nearly lost the will to live. It's particularly galling to be lectured by blue ticks for being anon and behaving not up to scratch when shit like this is going on with that lot! Vicky Pollard for academics.

BustedWench · 03/05/2020 15:55

Thing is, it SHOULD be out in the open, disagreements should happen and be transparent. The main issue I find is the skirting around shit, say the names or shut up.

Being shady and purposefully vague causes more crap and more misconceptions. Call it, and move on

BustedWench · 03/05/2020 15:52

Going at Julian was in bad taste, especially as both Stock and Bindel had openly acted like dicks about Julian with barely an eye brow raised.

It's OK for Stock et al., to be middle class, but if an Anon account mentions such, they're demonised.

Honestly it is an absolute shit show, and the same names appear. Go figure 🤷‍♀️

marvellousnightforamooncup · 03/05/2020 15:44

Pretty much the state of it Tobeortobe and Corgi. Hope everyone draws a line and grows up soon.

Floisme · 03/05/2020 15:43

I thought the screenshots were the worst bit - they undermined most of what she'd been saying before about how difficult it was to talk about it without someone screenshotting and taking it out of context ... well duh. They also hinted without explaining, and so piqued my curiosity even more about matters which are probably none of my business.
I have no loyalty to anyone in this shitshow but I wanted to go round there and take her phone away.

OvaHere · 03/05/2020 15:38

If someone has a public blue tick profile on twitter I have to assume it's because there's something to be gained from it - otherwise why bother?

In the case of academic's, celebrities, journos etc... the gain must outweigh the cost because again, if it didn't they wouldn't bother.

I could post on twitter under my real name but what would be the point? I'm nobody of note, I don't have a PHD, I've never published an article anywhere, I'm not going be invited on TV or radio.

I'm a SAHM who is trying to do my bit of activism where I can so for me having a real name profile would have all the downsides and no benefits to balance it out. I assume most women who have anon twitter accounts are in a similar boat

RoyalCorgi · 03/05/2020 15:34

Have just read the JCJ piece (though couldn't read all the screen shots). It seemed very measured and reasonable to me.

The thing I dislike about all this is all the washing of one's dirty linen in public. People need to be having these disagreements in private, not flinging abuse at each other on Twitter where it can be seen by one's political opponents. It's not a good look.

BustedWench · 03/05/2020 15:33

Nailed it 👌

Tobeortobe · 03/05/2020 15:30

Jess Taylor was effed off about the JJ debacle and told off all the anon accounts who had been supporting her, defending her, and buying her book. She didn’t denounce anon accounts as the others did, but she did bite the hand that feeds her.
Ditum, Stock and Becca (has she lost her blue tick?) took the opportunity to pounce on anon accounts and have been extremely rude and unpleasant to what are essentially their bread and butter supporters (with applause from other blue ticks, most disappointingly Gia M)
JCJ is ignoring any of the very valid criticism levied at them as a group and took the opportunity to denounce a load of women who aren’t even in this discussion/fight.
It’s a shitshow

hellandhairnets · 03/05/2020 15:15

I've unfollowed a load of blue tick accounts today. I wasn't involved in the JJ thing but the reactions have helped me realise how little my voice is valued by lots of blue ticks.

Crux of it for me.

Coyoacan · 03/05/2020 15:10

I'm not certain it is a class thing as much as between people whose profession is involved with this issue, be it as a philosopher, sociologist or journalist, compared to the rest of us whose work is not involved with the issue or those whose work is involved, but are in way too vulnerable a position to be able to use their real names.

BustedWench · 03/05/2020 15:08

It was an epic rant, an epic one stating women were bullying them whilst they openly slagged off a woman and expected to get away with it.

Posie will confirm that her and I haven't seen eye to eye, but she was vilified and ostracised by these women and they're the good guys? Nah I'm not buying it
