I struggled to find a quick way to describe “victim stuff”, I didn’t mean to belittle experiences of women, myself included.

hellandhairnets · 30/04/2020 11:49

Becca is practising what's she's preaching in terms of anonymity, and is well known and a blue tick. And I should point out has had a lot of good to say in the past, as of course has Doc Stock and JB

However, the patronising comments and the self-congratulatory tone of the discussion with pals that followed about anonymous accounts left many who saw it in no doubt at all about how ordinary women and anyone with an anonymous account are viewed in reality. The little people, uneducated masses and trolls. The plebs essentially. Left a very nasty taste in the mouth.

And I'd say it's class-based. The 'establishment' or power always seems to reassert itself in these movements. Something which I recall Lisa Muggeridge talked quite a bit about in the past, and totally agreed with her about it at the time.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 30/04/2020 11:20

I guess having been on Mumsnet for 12 years and having started on social media here helped form my opinion on anonymity online. Also seeing people on here get doxxed. It's all very well being an academic or a journalist where your job is having an opinion. Not so much with ordinary folk trying to support their families and keep their head down at work. Opinions can cost livelihoods.

nauticant · 30/04/2020 11:17

Becca's real world identity is well known and a 1 second search of "boodleoops" will immediately provide it. It's unfair to claim she's preaching what she's not practising.

However, this ego stuff is depressing. I suppose it's a characteristic of all protest movements.

Floisme · 30/04/2020 11:16

To be fair, Boodleoops / Becca normally shows her full face so I assume the current photo is just a Covid 19 reference.

I do think they have a point about anonymous tweeters using the Magdalen Berns avatar. I get adopting it in her honour when she died but I imagine she would have had something to say about still using it as a front when she was all about being brave and public.

LadyBBKing · 30/04/2020 11:03

(That was in response to Sunset's post)

LadyBBKing · 30/04/2020 11:01

Indeed, those comments were extremely insulting.

'Becca', with a mask covering half of 'her' face is hardly going public..

HorseRadishFemish · 30/04/2020 10:59

Victim stuff?

Sex trafficking? Child abuse?

Or maybe you mean "literal" violence?

marvellousnightforamooncup · 30/04/2020 10:59

Now I understand the spat better I think JB needs some time off Twitter to think about what she's said. That's very insulting to anon users. I still admire her, bit she can fuck right off with that opinion.

DefinitivelyMe · 30/04/2020 10:29

Practically all of the known women who have either made money from feminism/victim stuff/academia are guilty of trying to be head girl. There’s a shuffling around where I think money and/or status overrides other motives, wholly or partly. It’s understandable really, as no one can survive on air alone, but irritating and destructive nonetheless.

SunsetBeetch · 30/04/2020 10:22

And this is the sort of thing that got people's backs up.

SunsetBeetch · 30/04/2020 10:18

I didn't see any "trolling" of Julie by GC accounst. I even searched her name to see if I'd missed something, and I don't think I have.

And it IS Jessica Taylor now Smile

Julie Bindel on twitter
nauticant · 30/04/2020 10:02

It is Jessica Eaton, not Taylor.

Ahhhh, I had both names in a box labelled "same but different" with a vague thought about trying to resolve my confusion.

"munchausens by queerness" is indeed splendid.

ScapaFlo · 30/04/2020 10:00

Sorry Floisme

DickKerrLadies · 30/04/2020 09:59

Argh meant to add that I'm not aiming my thoughts at anybody in particular, it really is random musings that I've been pondering over for a while.

ScapaFlo · 30/04/2020 09:59

My name isn't Flo either floisme Grin

DickKerrLadies · 30/04/2020 09:59

(I've started and deleted posts like this over the past couple of days but rather than do that again I'm just going to leave this as a ramble because while I haven't figured out all my thoughts yet, maybe someone else is feeling similar to me.)

I feel there's a discussion to be had regarding class divide in (big F) Feminism but ironically I don't feel articulate enough to start it, particularly on MN which skews middle-class.

I suppose it's similar to why I drifted to radical feminism rather than liberal - because the idea of 'free choice' seems idealistic and a bit Common People. Some people have more choices than others.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I don't expect anyone to share my opinion on everything, all the time, and that we can only bring our own experiences to the table. Women with strong opinions disagreeing strongly on some things despite agreeing on some other things is hardly surprising, is it? I'm sure we've all spent time on AIBU!

Bflatmajorsharp · 30/04/2020 09:50

Julie Bindel has been very forthright about the importance of 'speaking out' about GC issues for a while ie using your own name on SM etc.

That hasn't gone so well for a lot of (mainly) women without her financial security, status and contacts and i honestly don't blame people for remaining anonymous.

There's a clear difference between using Twatter anonymously, and creating sock puppets accounts to whip up (even more) frenzy or to throw in the odd bit of petty spite though.

The latter two aren't great and it must be annoying to encounter that on your feed every day.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 30/04/2020 09:28

Yes, people having too much time on their hands might be something to do with it. I didn't see most of it with JB only KS's tweet and someone laughing at JJ. I don't know what was said. I've been told it was trolling. I don't know why lots of GC women who follow and admire JB would suddenly start trolling her unless she'd been a twat about something.

I should let this drop but this whole thing has annoyed me. I'm sad there's a rift, I'm sad people I admire have flounced. I'm annoyed half the people I follow are getting preachy and half are sulky. I also don't think posters should be expected to behave with some kind of ladylike decorum at all times on Twitter which is a pretty wild place. I always try to be polite but I'm not above taking the piss a bit or having a joke.

HorseRadishFemish · 30/04/2020 09:05

.. munchausens by queerness behaviour..

This is why I love it here.

Floisme · 30/04/2020 08:22

My name isn't really Flo and I admire anyone who's brave enough to put their head over the parapet over this. Julie Bindel was one of the first and I'm sure it's cost her a lot; Kathleen Stock likewise.
So I get where they're coming from. But sometimes they remind me of the time I had a boss who was inspirational but who regarded being ill as a weakness.
I think everyone does what they can.
I also think there are people with too much time on their hands at the moment.

SunsetBeetch · 30/04/2020 08:16

"Anonymous" GC accounts were blamed for JJ deleting her tweet about Dr Taylor's book. But she also got flack from TRAs. Go figure.

SunsetBeetch · 30/04/2020 08:03

Fallingirl I think the implication was that anonymous accounts are trolls/abusive, which is really bloody insulting, for the reasons Winesalot has given.

That and the air of superiority coming from them, not for the first time, has pissed off a lot of GC women on twitter. You know, the ones that actually buy their books, read and retweet their articles, go to their talks and engage in real grassroots activism.

(I'm not including Dr Taylor in this, she hasn't behaved like The Great I Am, as far as I can see.)

Winesalot · 30/04/2020 06:58

I believe they are referring to anonymous accounts being the accounts without our real names on.

The ones people use because of doxxing issues, issues with employers and bullying.

Fallingirl · 30/04/2020 03:45

A whole lot of crap blew up after Jameela Jamil deleted that tweet about Jessica Eaton's book. Kathleen Stock lectured people on being nice. And then the conversation moved onto "anonymous accounts" on twitter, which Julie seems to have a bee in her bonnet about. They both pissed off a lot of women.

What on earth does “anonymous accounts” have to do with Jessica Taylor’s book, and which women were they pissing off?
