Also, it's not as if the same thing doesn't happen world wide. It's not specific to Cyprus. There was a documentary series on last year (I think) called 'Sex on Trial' which looked at rape trials in the US, and one of the cases featured was quite similar to this one. Two male police officers pressured the accuser into dropping the accusation and she ended up being jailed for a year. So happens everywhere, I'm afraid.

Strangerthantruth · 18/04/2020 18:12

The narrative that she was stitched up by a kangaroo court is unfair and smacks of racism to be honest, "of course those sneaky Greeks can't be trusted to give a Brit a fair trial can they eh?"

What a mind blowingly stupid comment, and it has a fair bit of competition. What "race" are Greeks then?

Got it @groundedby boris going to read it tonight while drinking my Espresso Martini recommended by another poster

Groundedbyboris · 18/04/2020 16:02

@Tonz £6.99 on Amazon kindle. It sounds good.
@truthisarevolutionaryact Her mate has proof on WhatsApp. Seriously though after watching the documentary I don't know how anyone wouldn't believe her

finnmcool · 18/04/2020 16:02

Homestayer there is a video, (that the police saw and is in evidence) of the victim telling the young men who piled into the room to get out and is seen trying to drive them out of the room.
The audio on the video confirms this.

TheQueef · 18/04/2020 15:56

Sorry that happened to you FinallyHappy (I too hope you are) it happened to my friend many years ago in Egypt, the authority response was almost as bad as the gang rape. I don't blame you for not reporting I'm sad your parents haven't given more support.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 18/04/2020 15:55

Welcome to Mumsnet Homestayer
You seem overtly invested in undermining this young woman's story with unverified allegations. Why is that I wonder?

Tonz · 18/04/2020 15:54

Have never heard of Black Cube. Well worth a read I'm ordering it now it sounds an interesting book

Ulver · 18/04/2020 15:51

Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators is a 2019 book by American journalist Ronan Farrow. He recounts the challenges he faced chasing the stories of Harvey Weinstein's decades of alleged rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse of women, and the case against him.[2][3][4] Farrow argues that Weinstein was able to use Black Cube, a private Israeli intelligence service,[5] to successfully pressure executives at NBC News to kill the story there, leading him to take it to The New Yorker, where it was published and helped spark the international #MeToo movement exposing sexual abuse of women in many industries.

It’s also a podcast which is handy!

Tonz · 18/04/2020 15:45

Women have been blamed for rape for years. They way we dress or if we've had alcohol and in this girls case having consensual sex. Have u watched the doc @Homestayer? U may change your mind

Ulver · 18/04/2020 15:43

Imfinallyhappy1

rosiepony · 18/04/2020 15:42

There is also an episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Shmit in which Titus, the gay character is targeted for seduction by a Mossad agent to get him to retract sexual assault evidence against his ex boss.
It’s a satire of the Harvey Weinstein case. It’s become a trope.

Imfinallyhappy1 · 18/04/2020 15:36

sorry typos. birth raped

Imfinallyhappy1 · 18/04/2020 15:36

I was taped at 14 in another country and felt so scared I stayed silent. Even after having a concealed pregnancy and giving both alone and nearly dying, the police just looked at it as 'an English girl slag'. No one cared my parents wanted to forget it happened and it's been years for me to not blame myself.

I believe her and I wish I was as brave as her.

Groundedbyboris · 18/04/2020 15:36

@Ulver Thanks for that was wanting a new book to read. Going to check if it's on amazon

Ulver · 18/04/2020 15:33

Ronan Farrow is the son of Mia Farrow and supposedly Woody Allen, though Mia had an affair with Frank Sinatra and many people are convinced that Ronan is actually Sinatra’s son.

Ulver · 18/04/2020 15:28

If anyone is interested in reading about it, Ronan Farrows book Catch and Kill is a must read. Pulitzer Prize winning journalist for the New Yorker magazine.

Ulver · 18/04/2020 15:26

If you notice the treatment of the victims of Harvey Weinstein who were stalked and harassed by private security ex Mossad agents ( Black Cube), who operated a sustained campaign of threats, smears and disinformation against victims, what happened to this victim is not surprising.

Tonz · 18/04/2020 15:24

@Groundedbyboris 😂 you might be right there

Homestayer · 18/04/2020 15:24

Yes I'm in the UK. Why?

Ulver · 18/04/2020 15:23

Homestayer are you in the U.K. or not. Easy question.

Ulver · 18/04/2020 15:22

THE Government has said it is "seriously concerned" about whether a teenager convicted of lying about being gang-raped in Ayia Napa had a fair trial.

In a rare statement, the Foreign Office said the UK will raise the issue with Cypriot authorities after the 19-year-old woman was convicted in Paralimni on Monday.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "The UK is seriously concerned about the fair trial guarantees in this deeply distressing case and we will be raising the issue with the Cypriot authorities."

Groundedbyboris · 18/04/2020 15:21

@Homestayer What the fuck has racism got to do with anything? Are you really that thick. Of course the trial was unfair. Your not the mother of one of them men are u?
