Keir Starmer wins Labour leadership

Well, it's the least worst option.

Hopefully Long-Bailey and Nandy will bog off to their TRA mates and stay there now. (Although I wonder if they will be dropped like hot stones now their usefulness has expired?)

Be interesting to see how/if/when/why Starmer addresses women's rights in the coming months and years.

ListeningQuietly and JustTurtles - I agree to an extent. It's not quite that simple as that though as it is not just the GRA, it is a party issue.

There are women with appeals still outstanding against being suspended and others who had their membership rejected on spurious grounds. All Women Shortlists for anyone who Self-Identifies as a woman, etc.

There is the problem with anti-semitism that he has said he will sort out. If he manages that then it will no longer be the party for a hotch-potch of middle-class, white, misogynistic, hard-left, woke anti-semites - but the other factors that alienate traditional labour voters and women who have not been brainwashed will remain.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 07/04/2020 14:20

TheABC- Do you seriously think he will beallowedto forget the "TWAW debate" by the Self-ID fanatics and hate-mongers in the Party who suckered all the other Leadership candidates into signing the "Pledge"??

I think they're definitely going to keep banging on at him but I think he's just going to ignore them as far as possible, and if asked directly will probably say something vague.
I'm very pleased with his shadow cabinet and the first few days so far. Perhaps I'll be disappointed but he strikes me as fairly savvy. Self-id is simply not a vote winner.

ListeningQuietly · 07/04/2020 13:53

Mole
Keir is a lawyer who has done very well for himself by twisting the words of others to win cases and influence people.
He will not be swayed by the TWAW brigade as he will see the holes in their arguments.
The size of his win gives him the mandate to pick which policies matter to voters rather than activists.

TBH, I would be surprised if Stammer even recollects the TWAW debate. Right now, we have people dying and a Government determined to stick to the (bonkers) Brexit deadline. That's two crisis, plus a global recession, to manage.

Scotland quietly dropped the GRA legislation due to Covid-19. I think Westminster will bury it in the same way.

One thing I will take at face value is Stammer's desire to be elected. The next four years is going to be car crash economics and the electorate will not take kindly to debates on the reality of womenhood and "let's be kind", when they are struggling to pit food on the table.

I don’t know much about Thangam Debbonaire. From what I’ve briefly read she looks like she may be our best bet. Is her concern over the mob recorded in print or was it known from people at the conference?

BlackForestCake · 07/04/2020 00:19

Thangam Debbonaire is in the Shad Cab, who is the single solitary MP who suggested it wasn't great to have a screaming mob banging on the windows of a feminist meeting at Labour conference.

Justhadathought · 06/04/2020 21:24

I can't work out who'll be pleased at Ed Miliband returning except Ed

i like Ed Milliband, myself. Much prefer him to his brother. Saw his speech at the end of a Labour party conference in Liverpool - liked it a lot, and find him genuine.

LaureBerthaud · 06/04/2020 20:03

I find the idea of Long Bailey in charge of young minds quite troubling

I know but I suppose Starmer had to put her somewhere as she got 130k votes in the contest but she can be shuffled into oblivion before Labour get anywhere near government.

FloralBunting · 06/04/2020 19:23

Rayner or Long Bailey.

The calibre of shadow education secretaries is testament to the quality of Labour's contribution to politics in 2020.

Things can only get better. Right? Right...?

Tanith · 06/04/2020 19:01

"Long Bailey as shadow education secretary?"

Mmmhmm! Replacing Angela Rayner. Every cloud... Smile

FloralBunting · 06/04/2020 18:24

Long Bailey as shadow education secretary?

I'm getting a lot of comfort at this stage from the fact that, like rainbows, shadows are visual ephemera that don't effect physical reality too much at all.

koshkatt · 06/04/2020 18:05

I rather liked David Milliband and think he would have made a damn good leader.

But I agree - the hideous mess that is the LP now after Corbyn/Momentum ruined it is going to take some turning around.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 06/04/2020 18:01

I can't work out who'll be pleased at Ed Miliband returning except Ed . I just have my fingers crossed that it's not an attempt to ease us gently into accepting the resurgence of the Milibands so his brother can stand as leader next time round. Hmm
Although tbh the Labour Party is now so removed from anything I'd vote for, that I'm more an interested observer than someone who is emotionally invested in it.

koshkatt · 06/04/2020 18:00

FFS Rebecca Long Bailey as Shadow Education Secretary. I have no confidence left whatsoever

As a teacher this scares me and I think that he has made a huge error. Looks like no vote for Labour from me for the foreseeable then. What a cock up.

Floisme · 06/04/2020 17:56

MrsGrindah · 06/04/2020 17:43

Ed Miliband..the guy that thought it was a vote winner to pose with a mock stone tablet with Labours Ten Commandments on....

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 06/04/2020 17:30

Wrong-Daily to Education

All teachers who don't believe in gender-fairies to be struck off?

MrsGrindah · 06/04/2020 17:09

Oh God Ed Miliband.

Justhadathought · 06/04/2020 17:01

Marsha De Cordova is the new women and Equalities minister. Anyone know anything about her? I understand she is registered blind.

R0wantrees · 06/04/2020 16:54

Tatchell said Starmer would make a “fine Labour leader” but said he hoped he would take on some of the “very thoughtful, intelligent proposals” made by Clive Lewis, the left-wing Labour MP who dropped out of the leadership contest in the early stages."

Clive Lewis MP made a sudden sharp turn after being re-educated by TRA in local party. It happened just before he withdrew from leadership contest.

Twitter ratios were something to behold!

RuffleCrow · 06/04/2020 16:49

RBS and co are there to appease Momentum in the short term. They know as well as we do they'll be out in the first reshuffle (after they've said something ridiculous).

SugarPlumFairyCakes · 06/04/2020 16:39

RuffleCrow · 06/04/2020 16:21

@MoleSmokes - no idea, but absolutely everything Clive Lewis claims to care about benefits him in some way. He's the king of metaphorical baby kissing.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 06/04/2020 16:06

Hmm, an endorsement from Peter Tatchell is the last thing I would want.
